Well, Samson did what Anders couldn't: root and branch, he destroyed the Templar Order. So I would very much agree that he's the templar that Thedas deserves.
Only if you side with the mages which I never do for various reasons, the order isn't slaughtered by the red Templars and Sir Barris redeems the Templar order if he survives though the order undergoes reforms as do the circles under Cassandra.

*Facepalm.
Your turning an logical argument into a circular one. Kirkwall is a mess, the order there is a mess. Cullen is stuck trying to clean everything up and can't cover everything. You think he can't control every action of the templers like that. Have you ever been is a city that's been through a disaster? Sorry, but there is so much he can do.

If you don't side with the mages, Samson doesn't show up, so this thread is only relevant to people who do side with the mages.

His job was not to take care of the city, its a job for Aveline, Bran and Hawke, his only job was to take care of the templars and he failed.*Facepalm.

You do understand the templars after the conflict were scattered right. As well as the mages they were suppose to protect. Saying he should of maintain order when the line of order was scatterrd is like saying a person should control their arm when the nerves to it are cut. He has to know where they are, he has to have a way to communicate to them, he has to have away to impose his orders, and he has to have place to command them. All which he has to restore...which takes time. H e has to fix what was broken down in order for him to maintain order both with the kirkwall order and the city. Even if he focused on just the order that still takes time, ESPECIALLY IN A DIVESTED CITY.

I think Cullen's hands were full enough to get the basic thing work in Kirkwall after Meredith's and Anders' rampage. Supposedly he knew little or nothing about the red lyrium, and his focus was totally different at the time. Maybe later we will get more facts from the writers.

I love this artwork. Samson's face profile was well-drawn. He also doesn't look so wasted as his in-game counterpart.
I just don't quite understand the symbolism behind the red crosses. Does anyone know if it's purely aesthetical?

I guess so, probably to cover the Red lyrium growing out of him.

Nope. Replay da2 with the quest about the Templer recruits. They are clueless.
The recruits that gossip about the knight commander and speculation of additional tests? Yeah...not seeing anything to suggest they don't know about lyrium.

They started threatening the head of state, they werent threatening a nobody, even Hawke, someone outside the Order, knew about the red lyrium. He had 3 years to do something about it, he wasnt just starting.
I think it's important to note that he also would have had to contend with the very culture Meredith built up in Kirkwall during her tenure as Knight-Commander and what the Seekers were willing to allow.
Look at the people she was promoting. She promoted Cullen because his views of magic matched hers when he first showed up. Alrik the sadistic rapist, Kerras the bloodthristy rapist and Metten the leader of the death squad. All Knight-Lieutenants, and two out of three confirmed to be appointed to their ranks before Meredith got the idol, as far back as Act 1.
Meredith gave the templars a great deal of power. Not only over their charges but also a great deal of political and military power. They were at the point they were pressuring the Guard Captain to resign so they could consolidate even more power. These templars likely grew accustomed to their power.
Cullen has a huge mess to deal with. Fighting the corruption in his own ranks, tracking down apostates, repairing the PR of the templars with the city, they did have nobles plotting against them as a Pro-mage Hawke meets up with, accepting a new viscount, try to work out what to do with lyrium statue Meredith, and likely answer Val Royeaux's questions on what happened.
I'm sure there was a great deal of resistance, especially from the templars who didn't want to give up the power Meredith gave them that they ought never had. And getting the templars act together in Kirkwall would be a pain in the butt because of how widespread the damage done is.
