Just for fun: If your Warden was in Here Lies the Abyss, what would the Nightmare taunt them about? etc etc.

I read some speculation that maybe in some old drafts somewhere, teh Hero of Ferelden was meant to have a larger role, taking the place of the Warden contact. All speculation obviously, and didn't happen anyway for a bunch of likely reasons...but it's still fun to think about.

So just for fun, in a hypothetical situation where that did happen and we somehow had complete control to make them in-character with DA:O (don't ask how, that isn't the point here.) what do you think your Warden would be like during that quest? What would they have to say about things? What would the Nightmare taunt them about?

Me, my Warden probably wouldn't be arguing with Hawke at all. She would think the Wardens do need to be punished for this. Maybe not as far as exile because they're needed, but she would definitely be estranged from the order from there on out.

The Nightmare would probably be mocking her for the whole thing in Dust Town, leaving her family behind, forgetting where she came from, and ending up having to murder her best friend because of it.

Ah, thought of this before. My Warden's a nice bundle of angsty problems just waiting to be poked at. Such delightful options include:

- Taking advantage of her friendship with Alistair, and making him do something he really doesn't want just to save her skin, because she was afraid of the fate expected of her. Basically, it'd be calling her out as a coward, somewhere, deep down. Despite all her bold talk. That would definitely get under her skin, because she knows deep down that it's true. That would warrant a growled "Shut up, shut up, shut up..."

- Tamlen. If she'd just been slightly more insistent on not poking creepy mirrors in creepy caves...maybe everything would have been different. Though, she talked about this one with Ariane in Witch Hunt, and she's kinda...accepted that she can't change it, and that it happened for a reason. Painful as it is.

- Burning Amaranthine to the ground, probably killing more than a few innocent, untainted people in the process.

- Forgetting her people. Human titles, living in human lands for 11 years with little to no contact with her clan, human girlfriend...one thing she tried to do for her people, with the Hinterlands, evidently backfired spectacularly. If it happened at all. She's probably the least Dalish Dalish of all time at this point.

- Something about Leliana, like the fact that she wasn't there for her when she needed her most, and that she's going to have to march off to the Deep Roads and leave her alone. And something about her being doomed to die as well, judging by the Hawke jabs.

As for the whole Warden thing...I imagine she'd be desperately wishing something could be salvaged from this, but not entirely disagreeing with what Hawke is saying. The Wardens dun goofed. They shouldn't be left off the hook.

Nobody wants to listen to you talk...

lol

"Do you think anyone heard you, Warden? Do you think anything you ever said was acknowledged? Nobody listened to anything you ever said, they just acted like they did because they were polite. Your dog was the only one who understood you."

"..."

"No denial? No angry responses? No witty retorts?"

"..."

"Well, you're no fun. I'm going to go bother Hawke again."

"Was it worth it, 'young Cousland'? When you left them behind in that dank cellar to die, Nan's corpse outside the door, and ran off to do what you dreamed of so fondly? Did you feel the hero when you saved the little boy, even while all you could think of as you looked at him was Oren, lying cold and empty on the ground. You had been dreaming of being a Warden when it all began, while all that you knew was shattered. Has it been what you hoped? Have you made Bryce proud, do you think? Conspiring with thieves and assassins, drunkards and maleficarum. Befriending the monsters of the world.

"She was fond of your mother, the woman you displaced from her throne. She said that didn't she? 'Eleanor in particular was dear to me', weren't those her words? You've always known, that you should have told Alistair to do what was practical. You should have done what was best for Ferelden, for the world. She should have married Alistair, and ruled beside him, not you. If you were the hero you wanted to be, you wouldn't be alive at all. You told yourself that it was for the best chance of saving the world, but that was not the case, was it? It was for yourself. For what you wanted, alone."

Yeah...there's a lot of doubt to work with there.

Which button Nightmare would push depends on the Warden.

- If it were my 'canon' human noble Warden, probably the fact that Morrigan gave Alistair a child and she can't do the same. She's not only upset about it because she loves Alistair and wants to give him a family, but because she loves Ferelden and wants to provide it with an heir. (Yeah, she spends a lot of time second-guessing her decision to marry him in the first place. She'd probably feel marginally better if she could look into other universes and realise that Alistair sucks just as badly at producing offspring if left to his own devices.)

- My mage Warden .... hmmmm, this would be tricky. He's pretty ruthless and doesn't have a lot of regrets or spend much time second-guessing his choices. Maybe 'Zevran doesn't really love you'? Which would result in the Warden rolling his eyes and responding 'yeah, that's not what he said last night while I was !@#$ing him.'

- For my Dalish Warden it would be 'you left your clan and now they're all dead.' Which would be especially interesting if Hawke was also there in the Fade, since she's the one who slaughtered them all ...

- My dwarf commoner is another tricky one. Probably 'you're a screw-up and you killed your best friend and your mother never loved you' to which he would respond 'so what else is new?'

- With my elf mage it would be 'you failed in your duty as a Warden and betrayed Leilana by doing the Dark Ritual with that evil witch. It would have been better if you'd died.' This would be the taunt most likely to actually work, since it's basically what he believes.

... aaaaaaand my other Wardens are dead, and therefore not really in a position to be sassed by Nightmare demons.

I think both my surana and tabris wouldn't defend the wardens at all, they don't care enough. Joining the wardens was a way to escape life in the circle (especially after getting caught helping Jowan) or escaping the death sentence after daring to defend herself against a noble that wanted to rape and kill her.
As for what the nightmare demon would taunt them with:
- it would taunt both of them with the fact that they made Alistair perform the DR to escape death ( why should they give their life for a bunch of ungreatfull shemlen)
-for tabris it would also bring up how she failed shianni, and how shemlen respect her, while her family and the rest of the city elves squander in alianages and have near-slave status
-for surana it would bring up her weakness for Jowan, and how she set him free even though he got her in big trouble, and doesn't seem to really apologise.
As for responses, they'd probably just shut up and roll their eyes :)

"Ah, the great Aedan Cousland, Vanquisher of the Blight, Saviour of All, Hypocrite.

You destroyed the Mage Collective with no evidence of any wrongdoing, nothing but fears and suspicion and then hid your magical son from Templars for nearly a decade.

How would dear, innocent Kieran feel if he knew the father he idolizes sometimes looks at him and is terrified. That there are sleepless nights where the question "Have I created a monster?" is so strong in his mind that silences even the hum of the Tainted blood? Perhaps I should whisper it to him tonight.

He knows. Whenever that happens, he holds my hand and says "Don't worry, father. I won't hurt anyone.

Speak all you wish, demon. You hold no power over me."

"You spent your life searching for knowledge and power only to learn you're nothing more than a puppet. Week mind, feeble will. Clarel failed, you would not. Corypheus chose the wrong Warden"

"Oh, come on, you can do better. I'm stronger than that and you know it"

"So you claim. Are you sure you passed your Harrowing? Maybe your resolve isn't yours at all? Were people of Redcliffe another blood sacrifice?"

"Wait... what now? How come I didn't think of that"

*evil laughter*

"None of the choices or sacrifices you made mattered. Alistair will succumb to the calling in a few years and Ferelden will descend into civil war."

As far as the rest, my Warden goes along with the "whatever it takes" philosophy, but there are lines she won't cross. She let the Architect live, but this whole "summoning an army of demons" thing is just way too insane to ever go along with.

That would be an obvious one for all surviving Wardens.

Tell me, Hero of Ferelden, how does it feel? Knowing that everything you did, every decision you made and every step you took was in vain? Every man you send to his death, every woman you made a widow, every child you couldn't save...do you even remember their faces or are they nothing but the dust under your shoes, to be stepped over and swiftly forgotten on your path to glory? And what for? Nothing. You have achieved nothing. You are nothing. And you will be nothing.

My hero would fear that it was all futile. But my hero is dead and no demon can get to her. If, by some chance and *magic* she'd be alive, she'd be weary of demons, battle-hardened and ... very tired. It would make it easier for her to sacrifice herself and let Hawke and the Inquisitor go.

To my female city elf.

"You feel it,don't you? The darkness behind your eyes, the sickness bubble in your stomach, the coldness always drawing out your spine, and the whispers..Yes the whispers....Always getting louder and louder. Always reminding you that soon it has to end....or else. And Leliana...Poor Leliana has to watch you end your self to sit back and do nothing as  her one true love dooms herself. But have no choice. You have to dive head first into danger. All this is your fault with you conscripting the one man who triggered all the chaos to happen. To think it would end this way despite all that you did to live. To allow something dark and unspeakable to live all just so you would live and lose no one. How does it feel, hero, to doom yourself no matter what path you take and doom the world more and more as you struggle with your fate? How does it feel to find it may of been better to die to the archdemon then to live as a festering wound?"

To my female dalish.

"Look at you, warden. Always the survivor. Always the one that lives. No matter what. No matter if you do not wish it. Who's going to jump and end their life to save you this time, hmmm? Tamlin took a doomed fate in your stead and died before your eyes when you found out what happened to him. And Alistair the man who broke your heart to be king, a choice you made him pick, stood in your way in ending you own life all because he loved you and could not see you die even after all the horrible thing you said to him at the end. Ha, what a high cost for your love. Both the men who you loved had to die to prove it. Nearly any one you love or cares for dies. You bring nothing but death to everyone around you with the  unfortunate exception to your self. Now, who here is going to die in you place this time?"

Depends on the warden but on some of my wardens nightmare wouldn't have anything because all they cared were themselves neither they felt bad about lives they crushed for own profit or entertainment but in most of that cases my warden wouldn't even stick with wardens in first place.

And then, pretty much all of my HoFs would go nuclear, kill the blasted demon and nobody would have to be left behind.

This would be my Warden's nightmare as well. I think her biggest fear would be that all of her decisions don't matter. That, and that everyone at court dismisses her as a royal joke because she is Alistair's mistress and that this outweighs all the good she has done.

Or in my Warden's case, taking advantage of Alistair's love for her to push him into the arms of another woman and possibly unleash a monster upon the world just because she wanted to stay together with her boyfriend.

"You think you're above temptation. You hear the voices....calling to you, promises of power and all you have to do is just give in. You walk a dark path warden and you will fall just like all the others before you."

My warden was a mage who turned to blood magic for the "greater good." In his eyes the end justifies the means.

"Warden-Commander Aeducan. Do you still fear your people have truly lost their way? Living among the leftovers of a Blight-scorched civilisation. Your lineage lies broken; a king and a prince dead, a younger sibling sitting among the royal seat stained with the blood of your elder brother. You worry about the inevitable demise of the dwarves as they cling to long dead glories in Darkspawn lands. You also fear for the future of your son, Duncan. A son you will never see again. It speaks louder to you then the very whispers of the Calling. Yes, you know your time is not far"..

Hmm, I'll do my favourites.

Surana: Her fear is failing the people she cares for. Jowan, Irving, Alistair, Anders and Justice. Especially the latter two. She feels that if she'd been a better leader, they would never have ended up in their situation, never have fled to Kirkwall and blown up a Chantry. That extends to the fear of losing Zevran, either to the Crows' vengeance, or her own Calling. The mage and elven uprisings respectively also cause her a lot of anxiety, both for people she knew (in the Circle) and 'her people' in general.

Female Mahariel: Probably the fact that she's indirectly reponsible for the death of her whole clan. If she and Tamlen hadn't found the mirror (or if they'd left it alone instead of d*cking around with it), then Merrill would never have learned blood magic, never left the clan, Pol wouldn't have run from her into a varterral, Marethari wouldn't have become possessed, and Hawke wouldn't be forced to wipe them all out. Plus, Mahariel wouldn't have lost her best friend and been forced to become a Warden.

Male Mahariel: He fears that one day, Asha'bellanar will return and take vengeance upon him for 'killing' her. Not just him, but Morrigan and their child too. This is made worse by the worry that placing an Old God's soul into Kieran has harmed the boy and marked him as a target. His fear is that they'll never be safe from Flemeth (a fear that I'm sure the Well has only increased...).

Cousland: Agreeing to the Dark Ritual. He never trusted Morrigan, and failed in his duty as a Warden by risking the ritual. He's afraid that the people who call him a hero now will revile him when something worse than the 5th Blight starts, and everyone learns of him cowardice. When that happens, he'd be stripped of his title as the King-Consort and his family's name would forever be tainted.

Brosca: That everything she has gained since leaving Dust town will be for nothing. King Alistair will cut her loose, the same will happen to Rica, and they'll be back to poverty. She'll have to continue with the Wardens or become a worthless thug again, and when she dies from the Taint, her sister and nephew will have nothing.
