Well, Arcanum's clearly older visually but has a richer world and, if memory serves, combat is in RT as opposed to ToEE where you take turns. You can easily get side-tracked in Arcanum because there's SO much to do and you never feel like you're doing fetch quests. Also, Arcanum is more of a Steampunk-ish type of world where magic and technology try to co-exist whereas ToEE is more of a high-fantasy kind of world. There are LOTS of companions in Arcanum but your ability to recruit them will largely depend on whether you're more magically or technologically-inclined.

I would suggest you check a few videos on Arcanum to see whether the visuals and gameplay is something you can get behind. If it is, I would strongly recommend it as it is the better value of the two.

Arcanum does have a turn based option for combat.  Also be sure to read the manual as it gives a very detailed view of the world Arcanum is based in, it's also a lot of fun as it's written by a character you can meet in the game so you can feel his racial bias in some of the pages and you can talk to him about it,

I'm just thinking #CONSOLEMASTERRACE

No pesky DRM with physical media.

Only a matter of time.  Microsoft tried to implement DRM into the XBox One, and there are a number of games that do require to be online to get the most out of them and this can be seen as a form of DRM.

Um so Arcanum or ToEE?

Both. Also TOEE has the best D&D implementation

Having to leave my house to buy physical games?

What is this, the dark ages?

Put the almighty Amazon to use.

Yeah I remember. Seemed kind of sketchy but the additional features they were offering along with that didn't make it wholly terrible. Too bad they nixed the game sharing stuff when they reversed on all the online requirements.

You're right, it does have turn-based combat as well! It was probably just me who favoured real-time. ;)

Indeed f*ck drm, I have been so tired of it the latest years so i mostly buy games from GoG now.

Doesn't really matter since there's only about 3 games of interest to me this year except a few kickstarterts.

Just make the client more reliable than steam and i'm happy, steam is slowly becoming a piece of sh!t.

I do agree that competition for Valve is an excellent idea.

I'm certain they have the technology for it. When you give an application administrator privileges, that app can read and write to the hard drive (that's what it's doing when you save or delete a saved game). They could drop in a program that finds all files associated with the game and deletes them. The outcry would probably be insane though.

Thing is, they haven't though and that feature would lead to piracy becoming even bigger if companies (foolishly) tried to do such things. If pirates can find a way to crack games and remove DRM then they'd find a way to remove a worst program and then distribute the game on its own still.

And there was an outcry so Microsoft had to backtrack whilst Sony took the opportunity to mock:

Given the immense popularity of Sony for that and how fast Microsoft quickly backtracked, DRM won't be happening to any console so long as gamers remain vocal about it. Unfortunately it was too late for PC gaming but thankfully that's changing now.

Yeah, I don't think they'll actually do it. But they have the capability.

Have to admit that developers have done some creative things to combat piracy
