What's everyone rolling with the Necromancer?  I just unlocked it and can't decide which route to go.  Gravelord seems fitting for the class, but those Cold spells look like a nice mix of damage and CC.  Anyone try both and have a preference?

I prefer both trees I go down to upgraded walking bomb first then death siphon then either add more damage or start going down the frost tree grabbing frost armor and either going down to ice mine or blizzard.  By the end you are at the bottom of both trees or near it.  Just don't take spirit mark expecting it to work like you would think it does the AI is horrible for pets.

The abilities I use by far the most for that class are the two opening abilities you are given.

Horror/Despair and Winters Grasp/Winter Chill.  I also usually spec into fade step.

I tried a build with the high level necro powers but didn't really like them.  My latest has their last ability being energy Barrage/Bombardment.

She's damn useful only using the opening two abilities though.  Horror really helps the up front fighters and winters graps stops enemies in their tracks who are threatening you.

Necro my top class. Best and most fun game play imo is arcane barrage/walking bomb/fade step/ horror.
Horror you can change for whatever but this is the best build I reckon.
The barrage and walking bomb combo into something very nice :)

Walking bomb upgraded, with the increased damage and heal passives.  I also always have Fade Step (upgraded!) and Winter's Chill/Grasp.  Also keep Horror, but I will sometimes swap it out for blizzard depending on if I'm playing with friends or pugs.

Definitely my favorite mage class, though.

I run the Necro more as a Gravelord, but I keep Winters Grasp in the bar for it's utility to stop mooks in their tracks.

I go Walking Bomb, Winter's Grasp, Frost Step, Blizzard.  Walking Bomb and Frost Step are the two I'm attached to though, I've tried other things in the remaining slots on some promotions.

My favourite build so far:

Playing with Walking Bomb + Flashfire with the Virulence passive was pretty fun as well.

I prefer the Gravelord tree with a few points in the other.  Blizzard, although it's fun the way it toggles on and off, was underwhelming and ice mine = boring.  I love watching stuff explode all over the map and multiplying status effects (like upgraded Winter's Grasp) with a good gravelord build.

I go ice.

And constantly make terrible puns like Arnie in Batman and Robin.

I'm lying. I totally had the part of my brain the contains memories of Batman and Robin surgically removed.

I usually go Winter's Grasp, Fade Cloak, Walking Bomb + whatever I feel like putting in that last spot. Spirit Mark, Frost Step, Flash Fire... mix and match.

I really like Blizzard, Winter's Grasp, Walking Bomb and either Fade Step+ or Fade Cloak+. I tried out Horror with the upgrade but I find the important enemies are immune to fear and the upgrade DoT doesn't seem to last thanks to people hitting them out of fear. It is nice to scatter trash mobs off of me or front line but I wish Shadows and Venatori assassin's where not immune. I think Wraith's are immune but not sure. I forget...

Sometimes I go spirit mark. I really don't like like Mines and Ice Mine seemed even less piratical than fire mine. Didn't like just standing on it for armor and offensively I only seem to be catching one or two Shades in the blast. :/

Sometimes I go spirit mark.

Sometimes I go Caltrops, but I don't think you Spirit Mark enough to hang with me.

Horror is OK
Flashfire and Mindblast are pointless

Spirit mark is broken
Walking Bomb is INSANE

Blizzard is broken (doesn't freeze)
Ice mine is inconsistent
Arcane barrage doesn't have enough synergy
Winters grasp is OK
Fadecloak is amazing
Fadestep is OK

As far as I'm concerned, the only decision you have to make is between Winters grasp or fadestep (which will be replaced by blizzard when they fix it.

Blizzard is broken (doesn't freeze).

Not only it does not freeze but in some cases it does no damage at all whatsoever. Animation/sound is always there though but damage is frequently absent especially off-host.

I'd argue that the Necromancer is the only class where Flashfire is actually relevant.

Similarly, Mind Blast is actually pretty useful, but situational on being in close-quarters and needing to drop aggro.

"Situational" Being amazing with a CQC group gaining 35k exp per perilous run due to MB WB Necros + Keeper. Situational indeed. Before anyone uses the 'but I can't pug with it' excuse, not every game is about your individual habits and the failure to make a decent team. Blame it on the rubberbanding bugs, not the fact this stuff works.

This is exactly my build as well. Winter's Grasp, Fade Step (upgraded), Horror (upgraded), Walking Bomb (upgraded). With Horror and Walking Bomb upgraded and with a heal-on-hit staff, i come back from the dead about 4 times a match in perilous, a true necromancer lol (because the dots keep ticking after i've fallen; heal on kill doesn't do the same thing unless you miraculously manage to kill something with a dot while you're dead).

Yes, i could do more damage with a better staff, but the rng hates me. Plus, i don't do too shabby dps-wise with this setup actually.

What in the bloody hell are you on about? I can't even figure out if you are trying to agree with me or disagree.

I love how she handles as well... Fast and maneuverable. If playing a stationary mage build is like walking somewhere, then this build is like driving a Ferrari.  B)

Necro is definately one of my faves, though I'd personally love to have a spirit school/tree instead, like in the first two games, miss it in sp and would love to see it in mp, anyone else miss spirit bolt, or the entropy spells from origins.

But yeah, My necro is a nice even split, running with Horror, winter's grasp, walking bomb, and blizzard

pretty much that

What in the bloody hell are you on about?

Mind Blast's utility is about as situational as barrier's utility is situational. It isn't. If you're not using it almost the time (other than issues with timing), you're using it wrong. While I wouldn't recommend it for a pure ranged caster build, it would be the same recommendation for FC. the whole drop aggro bit is irrelevant to its true utility. Exp farming, stagger, barrier and detonation are MB's true strengths.

In particular, there's a perilous exp farming team MB build involving 3x Necros + 1x Keeper with MB, Walking bomb and Static Cage, that farms perilous with close range combat, lots of AoE spells and status effects, and clears perilous moderately fast at around 10-15 minutes per clear and averaging 35k exp per run. Typical perilous teams gain 20-25k exp.

MB's ability can be exploited a lot, if you knew how to use it. Situational implies it is of limited use. I claim the situations you can make it work are so amazing you wouldn't want to pass it by in team builds.
