Looks like it's that time of the year and episodic games have decided to fill the void left by larger AAA titles. So, while some of us wait for Pillars of Eternity, Witcher 3, et al., Camouflaj has finally decided to make good on their promise and bring République to the PC.
For those of you who don't know, République is a Kickstarter game originally announced for iOS but now also available on the Google Play and Amazon stores. In République you play yourself, helping a young girl named Hope escape from a facility inside the totalitarian state of, you guessed it, République. By hacking into the regime's surveillance network you will be able to control cameras to monitor Hope's progress as well as keep a watchful eye on the various guards; lock/unlock security doors; and hack a variety of electronic devices; thus guiding Hope "through a web of danger and deception across five thrilling episodes," according to the game's description.
If you want more details, here's what the Wiki has to say on the setting and characters:
République takes place in an unnamed totalitarian state (similar to George Orwell's 1984[2]), within a facility called "Metamorphosis". Here, the Prizrak, the people of the totalitarian state, perform mysterious experiments on "Pre-Cals", people who were born and raised in the facility. One Pre-Cal woman, Hope (voiced by Rena Strober), manages to contact the player through their phone, and requests them to help her escape from Metamorphosis. She and the player receive assistance from Cooper, an American operative who is working undercover in Metamorphosis. Other characters include Daniel Zager (voiced by David Hayter), a deceased revolutionary who leaves audio logs behind for Hope and the player; and Mireille Prideaux (voiced by Jennifer Hale), who serves as Hope's caretaker.
To date, three episodes have been released out of the total five:
- "Exordium" was released on December 19th, 2013;
- "Metamorphosis" was released on April 30th, 2014;
- "Ones and Zeroes" was released October 20th, 2014.
Work on the final two episodes was delayed so that the PC version could be released earlier. In Ryan Payton's (designer for République) own words, "At this pace, if we finish all five episodes, we wouldn't be able to ship PC until the end of this year, which is another 10-11 months to have those guys wait. That seems like a little bit much for them giving us $15 in 2012. That's always been nagging on us."
According to Polygon, République Remastered will release in two flavours, Standard and Deluxe, and will cost $24.99 and $34.99 respectively. The Deluxe version will also include a making-of, soundtrack, and playable prototypes. Both editions will get a 20% discount during the first week of release. The best part, however, is that République Remastered will not only be releasing on Steam, as you do, but also on GOG and Humble Bundle (emphasis on GOG since I'm assuming HB will sell Steam keys).
There you have it, folks. If you want to check some reviews, you can go to Metacritic's Camouflaj page. For what is worth, the average critic score for all released episodes is between 75-79 but I encourage you to read some of the reviews and perhaps even wait a bit for PC-specific reviews to see how the game plays out. You can read on some early PC impressions in the Polygon article I mentioned above here.
If anyone's already played it, I'd love to hear read your thoughts on it. ![]()
