Hi All,

Before I begin speaking, I warn this will involve some minor spoilers I believe. A conversation is available after the main quest "What Pride has Wrought" is completed, with Cole. Now, what is bugging me about it, is it seems to take an action that I can NOT control. Spoilers begin here!!

The conversation goes:

Cole: Corypheus died, and then he didn’t. That’s why he always felt wrong, like he didn’t fit inside himself. He wears another man’s life. I thought dying was forever.

Inquisitor: It’s hard for any of us to make sense of. Corypheus is using ancient magic. (One possible Option of three)

Cole: But is it him? Is he real? If a man can be dead and then not… Could I have saved the real Cole?

Inquisitor: What happened to him wasn’t your fault. (One possible option of three)

Now i've managed to find very FEW entries on this online, one entry gets a GOOD ending to the conversation,

Cole: His hands were bruised from beating on the wall. It was dark like the cabinet where he hid to escape his father. His belly hurt like knives, throat cracked dry. He was alone. I pushed through and held his hand. It was all I could do. He said, “Thank you.” [looks at Inquisitor] Thank you.

I am however unable to get this with ANY of the options and i can't find much on it online. i THOUGHT my approval with him was high and I also got him his amulet I believe. What I get over and over:

Cole: It Gnawed at me, hooks in the hollows, pain of not knowing like the knot in his belly..."

If anyone can shed some light on this please let me know, driving me NUTS!

I'm not too sure what you are asking but the outcome depends on what you did on his personal quest , whether you made him more spirit or human like.

read "Asunder" by David Gaider it gives a lot of history about Cole and it will explain this reference.  If you don't care to read "Asunder" (which is well worth reading) here is a summary of Cole's character: WARNING - Cole's story is very dark

I don't think the above part is related to that conversation at all. I remember getting it but I think it was just some random thing Cole said when I was walking up to/away from Him?

Or it could have to do with whether you went with Varric or Solas in his personal quest.

I apologize if i wasn't clear about all this. First of all, in my game he's a spirit. The two different things seem to lead Cole to do two different acts, The one I get :

Cole: It Gnawed at me, hooks in the hollows, pain of not knowing like the knot in his belly..."

He forces himself to forget "Cole" which to me is his identity as a spirit.

The second one:

Cole: His hands were bruised from beating on the wall. It was dark like the cabinet where he hid to escape his father. His belly hurt like knives, throat cracked dry. He was alone. I pushed through and held his hand. It was all I could do. He said, “Thank you.” [looks at Inquisitor] Thank you.

I am assuming in the 2nd one, he does not force himself to forget "Cole" the person he helped. I am wanting/hoping to get that from him, and not the first dark outcome.

I'm not sure what I can do or can't do to change that. Any hints or help would be appreciated, and will it affect the outcome endgame?

You can't get the second one if you made him more spirit-like. At all. Only if you made him more human.

You have to 1) make him more human; 2) get his approval. It's possible to get his approval if you do all the Hinterlands quests(especially all that involve helping the refugees) AFTER you move to Skyhold. This way he'll give you tons of approval even if he is not in the party. He's also giving you huge approval boosts for exiling the Wardens and arresting the Duchess peacefully, if I recall correctly.

The scene is different if he's more human or spirit. The example in the OP is more human. If he's more spirit, he's stood facing away from you, lets go of his feelings about the old Cole, goes a bit deadpan, and then the Inquisitor walks off like a twit.

It wouldn't surprise me if the dialogue is friendship-based. Cole's personal quest, and then this conversation, are triggered by story events, not character standing, so there would be a difference depending on how much respect he has for you and whether you've completed his quest or not.

Also, I liked the blunt option "No." there, that specifically says "Villian because the Blight which you don't have". The diplomatic option just sounds like a fluffy platitude that might have meaning to a person but has no real weight of meaning Cole could use.

It MAY also be related to the following:

Does not have the amulet yet

Has amulet (spirit)

Does not need amulet (human)

...and, of those three, and good standing, neutral, poor standing.

...though if you manage to get into poor standing with someone who's only goal is altruism, may THE MAKER HAVE MERCY ON YOUR SOOOOOULLLLLLL

I don't see the first as dark, though it's not as fluffy (and I do think it's approval based). He doesn't forget Cole, he just lets go of the pain from that experience so that it doesn't gnaw at him like it had been. To me that's still a positive outcome.

Actually, I believe some of you have answered it. Thanks to everyone. I believe that since he is a Spirit in mine, that is the expected response and that there is no other. I don't think this is affected by approval in any way, I believe my approval with him is very high as it stands.

Unfortunately, yes. The fact that the Inquisitor walks off like they don't give a whit is definitely a problem.

agreed but oh well. I guess making him human was always the preferred route for the devs.

I don't think devs preferred anything. I did Cole's quest after Solas' quest (where his spirit-friend is turned into a pride demon), and it seems very logical NOT trying to make Cole human, as there's a risk of turning it to a demon. Also Cole's story gets a happy closure as a spirit too, later. Well, it seems happy to me at least :)
