Here are my thoughts about the best class for the inquisitor, I believe there are three optimal choices:
Warrior- Champion.
Reason: every party needs a tank and this is as good as it gets. Being the tank yourself allows you to take anyone with you and gives you the most possible variation in party composition in your playthrough. Also, mark of the rift can be used well as the sole focus ability over the champions defensive one.
Rogue- Assassin.
Reason: Stealth to interact with rifts makes them a lot easier. Mark of the rift is a lot better than the assassin's focus ability.
Rogue- Artificer: Stealth for rifts and artificer's focus is unusable with daggers, making it a good holder of mark of the rift.

I don't really agree. On the assumption that the game would be difficult enough that you would need to do things like perfectly balance your party or stealth-close rifts to stand a chance, your line of thinking might be more useful (but even then there's something to say for every class). In reality though, the game can be soloed on nightmare. You don't need to stealth-close rifts, and any combination of party members will be able to achieve your goals. This is mostly a good thing, as it allows you to play any class or spec you want without having to worry too much about how effective it will be.

While the game can be soloed, some if not most ppl have a hard time, especially in the beginning. This pseudo guide was to make things easier and point out classes that the inquisitor is better than a follower. This game has a learning curve and these tips might smooth it a little.

I'll stick to a Rogue or a Reaver

The ai plays a horrible DPS character and they can play a passable tank. The character that requires the most micro management should be the one you control. Because you're probably going to control your inquisitor most of the time, your inquisitor should fill the role of DPS.  Ergo Reaver or Rogue.

Honestly it doesn't really matter, but it's the most optimal.

I agree it would undoubtedly dwarven warrior sns tank champion or templar, youre invincible either ways. Having a non crappy focus ability is nice too.

The drawback is tank classes may be less fun than daggers or mage play.

For those saying you have to control your inquisitor most of the time, that is not true. I barely control my champion, assuming direct control(pun intended) of my companions.

I prefer to play as my Inquisitor most, if not all the time, for roleplay purposes. Thus, S&S tanks are out for me, as the AI is actually good at playing them and you get two excellent ones to choose from.

Tempest archers are boss-killers extraordinaire, at least until they nerf the stupidly broken Flask of Lightning. Playing as one eliminates the need to take Sera anywhere if she annoys you (as she does me)! DW Assassins have incredible burst damage, and are a good option for manual control, since the AI sucks at playing them. Same goes for Reaver.

Knight Enchanters are also stupidly overpowered, and Rift Mages are unparalleled at crowd control. Really, as the poster above pointed out, the game is easy enough, even on Nightmare, that your Inquisitor can be any race or class you prefer.

I have to admit that any 'best class for Inquisitor' comparison that doesn't include the Knight Enchanter can't be that accurate. Played by the AI, these work like hamstrung Mages.... Played by a Human, they can solo the game.

If you control viv she is no different than the inquisitor. The only instance that an inquisitor is better than viv is if they are a qunari.

That goes for any character in the game, though. You can't argue 'Champion is best because you need it' then disregard everything else on the basis that you can just play the character directly. Indeed, the Champion is probably one of the worst classes for the inquisitor as the AI can handle it so easily.

Why has no one mentioned the massively overpowered Knight Enchanter yet?

I can solo high dragons on nightmare with mine. If you're looking for easy, or the quickest or "best" stat/combat wise class for the Inquisitor, it's a mage/KE for sure.

PS - If you're going to do KE, go all the way. Go to the nexus and pick up the mod that removes class restrictions on weapons and play an old school Arcane Warrior. I did and it was MASSIVELY fun, and added sooooo much extra strategy to many facets of the game.

Also - he was definitely the best set up for inquisitor. I'm playing a rogue now, and wanted to test everything out, but honestly I had so much fun I'm thinking of starting over (at level 20) just to do Arcane Warrior again.

elf mage who is specced as a knight enchanter just perfect imo

then perhaps the 2 handed warrior second with a rogue a few yards back( never felt inclined to finish my rogue playthrough, couldn't roleplay it right)

I agree with this because I played a 2H Warrior Reaver and I spent 80% of the game playing as Sera 80% of the time because my 2H Warrior Reaver would kill things way to easily. As I said in another topic I got more out of my sw/sh Templar warrior because I would still have to use strategy by using grappling chain, whack a few times, shield bash, whack some more, the other knock down and whack some more one last time to win. Playing as a Mage or Rouge I at least use some strategy instead of running a character on auto pilot 80% of the time and get great results.

Lore wise? I've always gone for warrior in Dragon Age. Mostly because mages are squishy if they end up in an ambush situation or in melee range and our Dragon age heroes have a nasty tendency to happen to fall into melee range with people they shouldn't be messing around with.

So for me, warriors always seem to be the best 'balance' of class type that can deal with any situations and survive (mostly).

Mechanic-wise? Any class/build is fine obvs!

One side note, going mage is only worth it if you are qunari.

I do love my Adaar, he's an Inferno heavy KE, and even on nightmare, it's a cake walk solo so, I can take whomever I like along just for the banter and, because I like them with me.

As others noted, KE on the AI - useless twit over there. KE under human control - invisible powerhouse. I don't even give Viv KE abilities, AI can't use them effectively anyway, she does well as a spirit/storm mage.

Unfortunately, this is why I barely use her. I can take Dorian or Solas along and gain the benefits of their specialisations, but I can't take Viv and gain a tank/nuker hybrid, I just gain a basic mage. The guys can do that already.

The AI can still make good use of disruption field and the longer shield decay time though.

Beg to differ. The only time I've ever seen the AI trigger Disruption Field is when an opponent charges her.... Which isn't totally useless, but nowhere near a 'good' use of the spell. 'Good' would be running up to squadmates and dropping it over them, or fade-stepping into a group of minions and freezing the lot.

The longer shield decay... Ok, I wasn't arguing that the KE's passives are bad. But if I had to choose between a slightly longer barrier on a companion or the entire Rift Mage line of abilities, it'd be the same option everytime. The KE class is one of my favourite things about DA:I but it is a class that requires human control. Necro's and RMs can be set to do their own thing and I'd still get the majority of the respective spec's potential.

Best class for myself means the most versatile; Mage has this over Rogue thus far, IMO. And based on what little I have seen, Warrior comes in last again. Mage > Rogue > Warrior.

From this discussion I take ppl have misinterpreted my original post. What I proposed where the classes that the inquisitor would perform better than companions, not the most OP class. Sure KE is powerfull, but a KE quizz is not any better than viv (assuming not qunari). Also under the assumption that you do not need to control tour main all the time.

Probably.

I did enjoy my human mage story wise but man was it tough compared to my two human warrior characters. Do the Qunari mages get better bonuses?
