Congrats on another GOTY Bioware.

They also won for best Role-Playing/Massively Multiplayer GOTY

Shadow of Mordor did really well in design related categories.

Also this has no relation to the DICE development team.

Well done, Bioware! You earned it!

Has anyone played Shadow of Mordor? I keep hearing a lot of good things about it.

I played it on PS4. It's a fairly good game, though I think Inquisition is a bit better. If you've played Assassin's Creed and the Batman Arkham series, the combat and movement is kind of like a hybrid of those two. The story is decent, but nothing earthshaking.

Strange that Shadow of Mordor would win just about every category that would make it worthy of Game of the Year, but did not take top honors...

Congratulations BioWare! A particularly awesome award for them to win.

I was surprised they weren't nominated in the character category, but then, who would they pick ? Cassandra? Dorian? Bull? I can see how they might have had trouble choosing.

A game/film/tv programme can have lots of individual elements that are outstanding but still not be considered quite as good an overall package as something else. Speaking purely anecdotally as someone who has now played both games, I can understand why SoM won in most if its categories (though I don't get character and story honours, personally), but overall I still preferred DAI.

One potential explanation is that while SoM does many things really well  and exceeded expectations to the point of deserving recognition on a modular scale, the game was incapable of joining those constituents together to provide a cohesive and memorable experience as DAI did on a general scale.

Thanks for the review.  Sadly, it was the storytelling I was most interested in trying, since I read an article by Ken Levine (the guy who designed the System Shock/Bioshock games) where he raved about the narrative design in Shadows of Mordor.

The game's main story is nothing to really sneeze at, but the Nemesis system makes up for it, letting you make your own personal story. It really fueled personal rivalries with some of the Uruk captains you fought.

2014 was a slow year in gaming. DAI would not win GOTY if released against this 2015 lineup.

So....you can't even allow them this moment of victory....that's a level of bitterness I just do not get.

Congratulations Bioware, the award was well earned.

Considering that the big 2015 titles haven't even been released yet, that is pure speculation. What happens if all of those titles fall flat on their faces?

This award for DAI is deserved this year. It's the only non-DLC I purchased at all this year as not a single other game really grabbed my attention.

Clearly high production values and they tried something new and took a risk. Also after playing a few other games with terrible voice acting lately (FFXIV, GW2 - where even being an MMO shouldn't excuse how badly lines are delivered) this is something I value.

So the Nemesis system is good?  I might give SoM a go, then!

Four player coop now counts as "massive" multiplayer? Talk about faint praise...
