!! MINOR SPOILERS IF YOU HAVE NOT PLAYED AT MUCH !!
                                                             created for semi new players

Okay so basically i just killed the Hinderlands dragon at level 9 and it was so easy because i set up my characters like this.

Iron Bull - build him dps with the single target taunt and charge so he can build guard.

Blackwall - full vanguard tree so that he has a high armour rating and 2 taunts as to keep aggro off your main dps.

Solas - before each fight spec solas to be effective against the specific dragons weakness also get a staff that does the same, for the build you want barrier, energy barrage (tons of damage when exploiting specific dragons weaknesses) then spec the rest of the points to counter the dragons weakness for example, Hinderlands dragon is weak against ice so get an ice staff and build the ice tree so you have ice mine and blizzard.

Your inquisitor build does not really matter just go for more damage if you are a mage use a staff that is strong against that certain dragon just for extra dps, i had an ice staff but build all lightning just because damage

IMPORTANT: regeneration potions!, you can unlock then as soon as you finish the prologue, do it, it is definitely worth it. put 5 regen potions on each character and remember to use them when they lose health not when they are really low because it is heal over time.

additional tips - when the dragons fly away they will shoot at you from a distance, when they fly away go into tactical camera and split all your characters up simply by commanding them to move to different places this way if you do get hit it is only one character as apposed to all of them

when they start flapping their wings run in close to them if you are far away at the time it does not do damage if you are inside the "wind circle"

happy dragon hunting i hope this is helpful

experienced players feel free to add tips

Another easy way to deal with flying/sniping is to use the "sheath/cancel combat" button, this makes your group move faster and stick with you, allowing you to easily lead your group out of harms way to avoid eating fire/ice/lightning balls.

Lol.  Poor guy must have been so confused.  Then dead.

Why only autoattacks?

long shot and full draw would hit the rocks

and so I could tape the trigger down and watch TV for 15 minutes

that sounds like a really fun way to play a game... by not playing it.

Bah, just wait until you're post-Skyhold, respec Sera for full Tempest-ness, and use Flask of Fire + Thousand Cuts.

Girl kills Dragons within a minute, even on Nightmare.

You don't even need to abuse flask of fire to do it. If you truly want to cheese, she can kill dragons with one Thousand Cuts, even on Nightmare.

Seeing her plink away for 200 damage per arrow is almost physically painful.

Just killed the Frostback today at level 9/8 (9 Inq, party members 8). I did it just about as early as possible without cheese, before even going to Val Royeaux. Zero crafted items, only left the Hinterlands to turn in research items since they clog up the inventory after a while. It felt a bit luck based to do it that early but I got it after a few tries. Some observations:

1. If you're using a rogue you really need to get poisoned weapons for this fight. It's extremely cheap (20 stam I think) for the amount of free damage it provides. More importantly the damage is non conditional unlike something like long shot which is not worth using unless you are far away. If you use Varric you will want to clear Valammar first for the tier 3 Bianca arms. Mages should have fade step, barrier and energy barrage w/ ice staffs. Other abilities are not as mandatory though I'm partial to Winter's Grasp/Ice Mine to help control the adds.

2. Your tank needs charging bull, then either shield wall or combat roll. When the dragon rears back for a melee attack it has a very obvious windup animation. When you see it you can run through the dragon with bull charge, activate shield wall, or combat roll away from the dragon. All 3 will protect you although you need to have nearly full stamina to block with shield wall, otherwise you can still take some damage. Make sure to cancel charging bull after it goes through the dragon so you don't run off into the sunset.

3. The hardest part of the Hinterlands dragon fight is when it calls adds at around 1/3 health remaining. If not for this part of the fight it would be pretty easy to do even 4 or 5 levels lower IMO, as the high dragon's attacks are not too difficult to avoid on their own. When it does the stunning shout, this is when it is calling the babies to attack you. Look for red arrows on the edge of your compass to see where they are coming from.

--Immediately assign ranged party members to begin picking them off, do not wait for them to close the distance. Focus them down one at a time. Shatter combos with long shot are your friend here as well as ice-type energy barrage. Upgraded knockout powder is very useful as well as it can take a dragonling out of your hair for 20 seconds, more than one if you get lucky and they line up right.

--Try to keep the high dragon aggro'd onto the tank, do not assign the tank to attack dragonlings unless absolutely necessary. If the high dragon randomly aggros onto your mage and pukes fire all over him during this part, it could cost you the whole fight because it is very difficult to revive while 3-4 dragonlings are running around.

4. Save your barriers until you know someone is about to get hit. I.e. the flappy wings start up and someone is far from the circle around the dragon, they are guaranteed to take at least 1 hit so at this point you would try to barrier them before it happens. Don't toss barriers if you're not sure of the dragon's next move yet.

5. The most useful accessory for this fight is a potions belt because you get 1 extra regen potion. You can buy them in Val Royeaux. Each regen pot can take a party member from 1 hp to full given they stay alive for the duration so this is basically an extra "life." I don't care for fire resistance belts since it's only 7% resistance--if you get puked on it's not going to save you at all, the fire attacks do obscene damage if you're trying this pre-Skyhold. You have to just dodge them or negate them with barrier/shield wall.

6. When the dragon does a fire breath attack, keep the targeted party member as close as possible to its body. Stay right under it and its fire breath cannot reach you. It will walk backwards while breathing to try and get you out of the attack's dead zone, you can manually control the party member and walk forward with it to counter this. If you are not close enough to its body when a fire breath attack begins try to get as far away as possible instead since it does have a limited range (fade step and the like will save you here).

7. When the Frostback flies up onto the terrain surrounding the "arena" for the first two times, there is an overhang that you hide can under on both sides that it lands on. Gather underneath the overhang and wait for it to come back down so it cannot shoot fireballs at you.

8. Do not keep your ranged party members very far away from the dragon while attacking, you want to be as close to it as possible when flappy wings starts up. Just don't have them in melee range and they should be fine.

9. Pick a leg and focus fire it. Assign all party members to attack the same leg and try to use your damaging abilities on it. If you take out a leg you get 5-10 seconds of completely free action, the dragon will just fall down and whine for a bit allowing you to just wail on it.
