I've played the crap otta ME1. Is it safe for me to start out at VETERAN or higher? Is NORMAL too easy?

I found normal decently challenging as a Vanguard. The game is definitely harder than ME1.

Normal is tough so far.
I'm gonna want more game experience before I move up the difficulty ladder.

Try it. I always start on casual. I get way to frustrated and irritated when I first start a game.

Normal on this game seems to be harder than Veteran on ME1. I had to back the difficulty down to casual when fighting the Vorcha because between them and the heavy mechs, I was getting wasted.

If you use cover often(plus your and mates skills somewhat good), then Veteran should be ok.

Running and gunning is a quick way to get obliterated. Cover is a must. My only problem is that on Normal, whenever I peak out of cover to shoot, I get shot immediately.

Playing it on Veteran, and I dig it. Wouldn't go any lower than that personally.

Normal has proven just about the right difficulty for me, but I'm not excellent at shooters.

If you have the Shield skill(don't know anymore how it was called.)
Use
it often, and don't rush even if you are behind cover, especially if
you face against many enemys and have position disadvantage. (just be
patient and try to anticipate when you can fire, and with shields you
can take quite some shots but if it's taken out, reshield again before
go out.
If your enemy is reloading then try to take him out
instantly with fire tapping(is more accurate with SMG's), if he is
behind cover try to take him out with offensive skills arc shots.(That
works many times.)
Don't hestiate to use your squad(or part of
it) as distraction/cannon fodder to get some clean shots at the
enemy.(and don't waste unity if you almost cleard a area and only one
mate is down.
The mechs are bit a problem if you don't have
grenade launchers an such, make sure you have a good cover. (fastest
way to take them out is also with head shots but then try not to be too close to them.)
Try to be at a position where you don't get much flanking fire/crossfire.
Take
droids/humans without biotic(?) shields out with the pistol with head
shots, often it is not worth to use a bigger weapon for them.(unless
you have no choice.
Some things may be already clear as crystal for sure, some may not. Don't know my english is horrible.

Start on easy until you learn not to run up cover, start floating 6 feet in the air and die horribly.
Saves on time getting back to the peice of cover.

playing vanguard on veteran, it seems if you push forward fast you can stop alot of people from spawning and swarming you.

Veteran is a lot of fun as a Vanguard. I can go higher than that with other classes, but the Vanguard's close range focus basically prohibits you from using Charge because it's just way too easy to get surrounded and MAULED on anything higher than Veteran.
