I was playing a silver match as a shadow against cerberuse on Firestome Jade. I cloaked up, and used shadow strike to quickly get across the map to insta kill a phantom, except she ignored my cloak and insta killed me in mid animation of my insta-kill against her!
Why did this happen?
Also, I would love some general advice about how to kill phantoms without a shadow. I can't ever kill a single one without hiding in stealth. Nothing I do will stagger them!

Also L2P. If the fantums (or any enemy really) see you cloak, you have to wait until their aggro shifts or they will still attack you.

Use a stagger-stick- Venom, GPS, Graal, Scorpion, Acolyte, etc.

Phantoms can be really difficult, especially if you don't have good weapons and/or find them hard to hit.  Here are the easiest ways:

 

1.  Use weapons that can stagger them.  The Acolyte is the best, because it will also strip their barriers.  The Venom, Scorpion, Falcon, Geth Plasma Shotgun, Graal, Adas, Krysae, and other guns work pretty well too.  Basically, projectile weapons are your friend.

 

2.  Use powers that strip their barriers (like Overload or Energy Drain) and then quickly shoot them.

 

3.  Use projectile powers like Warp, Incinerate, etc., to make them freeze in place, and then shoot them.  Singularity is probably the best, because once you drop their barriers, the Singularity will pick them up and you can hit them with another biotic power for an explosion and easy kill.

 

4.  Use Stasis or Submission Net on them.

 

5.  Use powers that stagger them (Biotic Charge, Ballistic Blades, Barrier/Tech Armor detonations, etc.) and then shoot them.

 

6.  Use a Krogan with all melee maxed and do a running heavy melee in their face.  Or use the Krogan Warlord with a maxed out Biotic Hammer for an easy one-hit kill.

 

7.  Use DOT powers like Dark Channel or Reave (stacked as many times as possible) with maxed biotic power damage, and then let them run away to die.  Works fine on Silver, not as well on Gold+.

 

8.  Use grenades on them, but make sure you aren't "targeting" the Phantom when you are throwing them.  Either target a different enemy, or just throw the grenades at the ground or into a corner.  If you are targeting the Phantom, the grenade will have no effect.

 

I'm sure there are plenty of others I'm forgetting.

Easiest way really is just to go TGI + Carrier, even on Platinum he melts phantoms so fast they don't have time to react - but what's the fun in that?

The first problem is that our version of the Phantom sucks. Second is that it's Cerberus and they cheat.

Oh god I have died mid air while charging via buggy sync kill as well... the stuff vanguards put up with in this game...

Reave stacks with itself only up to 3 times, no?

 

On silver, a single cast of Dark Channel will indeed (eventually) kill a phantom with full health and barriers.

 

High-powered sniper rifle shots to the head while they're in cover or bubbled are also very effective.

If you struggle killing phantoms, the easiest way (imo) is stasis+headshot, using high power weapon of choice. Same can be fine with submission net, but you run the risk of the sub net missing.

Number one most useful tip: Don't host against Cerberus.

In all seriousness, a good way is to throw a projectile power at them so they put up their bubble and stand still, then go for the headshotzzz.  Otherwise, hitscan powers like DC will wreck her.

2) Shoot her bubble from safety

or

3) Use Justicar

A standard approach is to bring the Acolyte or the Scorpion pistol as a secondary weapon just to deal with phantoms (I always bring the Scorpion as a secondary weapon on the Destroyer for platinum).

 

There are also some great powers like lash that deals with them.
