I think DA:I is for the most part a good game. It's main flaw is that the large semi-open world format they went to is a bit too large...and a lot of that space was filled with uninteresting side content.
The main story quests and the companion character content however is as interesting (and sometimes more so) than previous games.
I agree my main issue with DA:I was that the story and the open world didn't gel well together.
The story tried to create a sense of urgency, but it didn't really work because you could mess around for 10 hours or so in an open world between each story mission.
My other issues with DA:I stem from the fact that I think they tried too hard to take fan feedback onboard in some areas.
- Some fans didn't like always being in Kirkwall in DA2, so we got a world that was a bit too open for the story and a tiny Val Royeaux
- Some people aren't a fan of voiced protagonists with personality like Hawke, so they made some of the Inquisitors neutral dialogue bland. (Although this seems depend on the VA, I didn't feel the same with Alix as theVA)
- 1/2 the fanbase seems to love DA:O style combat and 1/2 seemed to love DA2, so they tried to blend them with the tactical camera and it didn't quite work.
- etc.
That being said, I liked some of the experimentation that was going on in DA:I, it's story wasn't as tight as DA2 but I appreciated the show don't tell element when the game dealt with the Civil War and some of the environments were stunning. Some of the romances had actual romance in them, which I felt was lacking in previous games. I also felt like there was more work involving in beginning a romance in DA:I, it wasn't just a couple of conversations and then 'let's bang', there were romance specific quests to complete.
You could actually get to know your companions and it was easier to predict what they liked and what they didn't like, although I was a fan of the friend/rivalry system, if only because you got different dialogue for a friend status and a rivalry status.
I liked the crafting too, being able to craft the same good looking piece of armour but with better materials was great.
The potion, tonic & grenade system reminded me very much of the older RPGs I used to play. I never used tonics or grenades in DA:O or DA2 but I found them very useful in DA:I.
The thing about BioWare is, that they never make the same game twice, even games in the same series will have different mechanics. I appreciate this about BioWare, most AAA studios would find a formula that works and then stick with it forever.
Sometimes experiments work, sometimes they don't. Sometimes they work for some fans but don't work for others, but developers should never be afraid to experiment otherwise the RPG genre will end up like the FPS genre with all its COD Clones.
Ultimately DA:I is a great game and I enjoyed it. I'm looking forward to story DLC.
