I'm creating a new character and wanted to know your thoughts on this. I usually prefer a ranged character but I'm willing to go with daggers if the abilities/specializations are worth it.

Daggers are very strong but require some personal micromanagement to get off shatter combos pre skyhold where as archers can be afk'ed for an entire playthrough.

Its hard to say which is stronger, their both within the upper tier of class/specs and it might come down to play style preference.

IMO, a dual wielding rogue is the most fun class to control/micromanage. During my last playthrough on Nightmare I had to restart as an archer as I had problems with the very first boss fight and I thought it was quite boring to control an archer (plus I've controlled Sera at times and feel the same). A DW Rogue is fun as you have to move constantly and make quick time decisions on the battlefield. I also think it might be a questions of if you like to use tac cam or not. I use tac cam all the time, which fits the (my) play style with DW Rogues perfectly. They get insanely powerful at higher levels/with good gear - perhaps too much so as the game gets too easy. Well, I guess the same might be said for other classes as well.

Dual wield works ok later in the game, early on it was a nightmare, stay clear of the tactical cam and remember your squishy as...

Both weapon choices are good. In fact, every rogue specialization in the game can kill the strongest dragon solo on nightmare in less than 30 seconds.

Essentially if you're concerned about late game power as a rogue, don't be, because you'll do mind boggling damage no matter what you play.

So it comes down to what playstyle is more appealing to you.

^ I'd have to agree with this. I've done both a Tempest archer and a DW Assassin and they were both a lot of fun to play. I went with archer for my first Dalish character for lore and gameplay reasons: the Dalish are held up as extraordinary archers, so I couldn't NOT play as one my first go 'round! Plus, I've always enjoyed playing archers.

A DW Tempest is pure joy on the battlefield. Amazing equipment available, especially the best double blade with good crafting materials, and the abilities... you are just a nightmare raining on the ennemies... they never know where you are, they just have to endure the storm... you dance here and there like an acrobat in a coat of flames or ice, slashing one ennemy after the other, or several at the same time... it is never boring. The only problem is that you can't see precisely what you are doing with all the lights effects lol. It perfectly fits a nearly mad character. I think of the IQ archer as a more cold, less wild, kind of tempest, but it's very personal.

As has been stated, difficulty-wise they're both very capable of handling what the game throws at them. In terms of enjoyment though I'd have to hand it to the DW rogue. Every time I've played a ranged character I just end up always keeping my distance. With many of the ranged abilities having a very long range and the autoattacks having basically unlimited range, I find myself standing far enough away that I often don't really see the opponents or what they're up to, but rather just hit some keys, see some numbers flash and move on to the next target. There's next to no reason to move closer either, as range is such a good defense against almost every enemy in the game. In the long run, this tends to make me feel removed from the action.

With a melee class on the other hand you're always in the middle of things. You see the opponents move around, swing their weapons, ready their spells and so on. If you're an assassin you can pop into stealth and one-shot an enemy caster before he finishes his cast. If you're a tempest you can FoL, allowing you to sidestep the 2H swing of a mauler-type enemy that would otherwise have knocked you flat. If a bear stands up to do an aoe attack, you can vault to safety.

In short, being melee makes combat much more immersive and flat-out fun, giving you the chance to think on your feet and react to what the enemies are doing rather than standing untouchable at 30 metres away and looking at damage numbers.

I'd say that DW takes a lot more co-ordination than archer, but archer doesn't take nearly as much risks as DW.

Whatever floats your boat around playstyles is the one for you.

Go both.  I have an elven rogue and I swap every so often just for a change in play style.  Sometimes it's because I get a new weapon schematic from the next tier up.  Or sometimes I just get tired of watching for telegraphed attacks as a duel wielder.  Seriously it's great being able to swap from melee to ranged for 345 gold.  Sometimes I swap just to take someone along that I haven't in a while.  For example, I try to minimize the melee companions.  Sometimes when I want to take Iron bull along, or cole, I will swap specs just to make the game a little smoother.  Too much melee and I zip through health pots too quickly, which means more frequent visits to camp.

.........I've always been a dalish dagger wielder....In my mind, training in archery was just a compulsory part of their upbringing but my Dalish chars always specialized as assassins for whatever reason.

you want fun and more control, be a dagger rogue, theres 20 ways to approach an enemy, I always find archery boring and borderline overpowered, think of a mage but with less fun abilities

For elf rogue, I would say bow (Elf rogues and warriors are Dalish hunters), while others I would say it is a toss up (But dwarf works best as DW in my imagination).
