So is the choice of the Divine a lottery?

Vivienne is really hard to dodge with conscripted mages.
Vivi is the hardest to avoid being Divine, while Cassandra is the hardest to make Divine.
Even more so if you include precedence: [Vivi=Leli=Cass] = [Vivi>Leli>Cass]
As far as I can tell, anyway.

I mean for me dodging Vivienne is incredibly easy but that's because I basically share 0 of her views even with a devout character. Being super pro mage while picking Gaspard is usually enough to Cassandra it, especially if you exile the GWs I think.

Basically think if her lover doesn't die she becomes divine outright or its very hard to avoid, you find out her lovers family has deep chantry ties so its very hard to avoid depending on other choices....if I recall been a few weeks since I played one member of her lovers family is a cleric has well

I chose the war table operation to support Cassandra. Vivienne became Divine for me. I was on Patch 1 at the time (I finished the game for the first time yesterday and I only patched after that, for fear of getting any of the performance problems some people had... I wanted to at least finish the game once before ruining it!).

According to the PlotFlagInquisitor script that was posted on the main Divine-election-thread, I had Leliana (who was the only one I verbally supported, but nonetheless got no war table mission for) in the lead by two points in the end but still ended up with Cassandra on the Sunburst Throne. It was a tad frustrating. The election mechanics are either buggy or we haven't reliably figured them out yet. Someone in that thread claimed some dialog choices can lock Cassandra into becoming Divine regardless of points, but I don't know if that's true.

I did the exact same thing. How is your game after the update? I started a new one with a different tapestry and so far it's ok. The only bad thing I noticed so far is the loading time that is a little longer, other than that I'm ok with the patch, but I kept a copy of the folder with patch 1 just in case...

Vivienne is really hard to dodge with conscripted mages.
You can do it relatively easy if your motivation isn't to restore chantry and want Leliana as Divine. Refusing doing her quest also helps

I think that dialogue choices don't really affect the final result. I always agree with Vivienne saying pro-circles things (just to raise her approval) and then I go to Leliana or Dorian saying them that mages should be free (because apparently in this game you can act as a complete ******* affected by bipolar disease and no one will notice that), still I've always had Leliana as divine (only two playthroughs, in both of them I made an alliance with mages and wardens, reconciled Celene and Briala, unhardened Leliana, let Cassandra disband the Seekers and told Vivienne and Cass- for romance purpose- that I didn't think they would be good Divines).

The operation gives you 10 points but does not guarantee that candidate will be divine.
Very interesting. This explains why Leliana became the Divine in my playthrough although I had supported Cassandra and had done her war table mission.

This can't be right...
Cassandra was divine in my PT. But according to that point system, she came out with 0 (-11/+11) points while Leliana must have had at least +15 points...
I made the mages allies, kept Celene on the throne (the others executed), made the Wardens join the inquisition and made a stance for the elves in the inquisitor speech.
The only war table mission for divine I received was supporting Vivienne, which I ignored.
I supported Cassandra as divine in conversation and thought that is what decides things but apparently not.
Let's see what happens this time. I'm doing a Cass romance PT currently and want her to be divine again for maximum heartbreak.

I got Cassandra as Divine with my first playthrough with a human female warrior.
- told her she'd make a great Divine
- did not do a war table mission for any Divine (no mission showed)
- supported Celene
- exiled Gaspard
- can't remember what I picked for Briala
- exiled the Wardens
- allied with templars
- did Viviene's quest but her love died
- talked to Liliana about being Divine but can't remember what option I picked
- did Cassandra's mission but didn't complete it (3 out of 4 or something)
- romanced Cassandra till "let's be friends"
This playthrough I have a Qunari mage so will see who I get for Divine with different choices. I'd like to get Liliana.

I imagine its similar to how a new pope is selected.
