I might be very late to the party but...

 

So I was just experimenting and came across something...interesting.

 

It seems that Guardian Shield can also absorb damage inflicting talents.

 

When in Blood Magic, Fireball depleted 33 HP (I had some fatigue).  With Guardian Shield it depleted only 7 HP.

 

Works particular well with Blood Thirst, The Tainted Blade, and Blood Magic.
