Could DOI have been better if it was JUST a PC game and not a port?

I would happily play on consoles if they weren't closed systems and I could use a keyboard and mouse on them.

But then they'd be PCs.

So we're still doing the pc vs console bullshit, are we?

One day I hope to come and see that all the elitist douchenozzles on both sides of the argument have been raptured off the face of the Earth.

Clearly, however, that day is not today.

If consoles had the hardware PCs CAN, then we'd have great games for both. Show me a console with 1TB internal space to install games and 16 GB working memory to run those games and then we might be talking great games for both PC and consoles.

Hell, less than 13% of Steam users have PCs with that much RAM. The survey doesn't even go higher than 12 gigs.

Correct me if I am wrong but the PS4 has two dual 4 core processors with 8GB of ram with an up gradable 500GB hard drive that is not counting the Blu-ray drive. The GPU is a customized Radeon 7870. That surpasses or is equal to many computers that people have according to Steam survey cited by AlanC9.

The XBox one has strikingly similar specs. The power of the consoles has increased.  That not where the problem lies. As I stated the problem lies in lack of optimization by the developer for each platform.

Well the UI would have been better and the game would be probably a bit more hardcore-ish...

But other then that, if you played the game with a game pad on PC you have been fine.

I don't really care if the game is ported from PC to console or vice versa. I also think EAware is very capable of porting things over if given an additional time frame to work issues out before release. To me, and no one is going to change my mind on this, this game was not ready for release on PCs. Fundamental problems at launch that screams QA fell asleep at the wheel. Even the patches are at best, hit and miss. HOWEVER... I am pretty confident that the game will be less of a console port in a few months. After looking at the crap that 2014 was... Dragon Age Inquisition using FB3 is moving in an avant-garde direction. It's still not a PC game for PC gamers (Go for the eyes, Boo!) but it will address the controls issues (Maker, this better happen!) and we'll all be back to acting to like crack fiends waiting for their next hit.

I play with a gamepad (Nostromo) and it's a chore compared to Origins or DA2. However, you're right. It's playable, even though the Tactical Camera is still useless until the elevation issues are worked out.

The entire console computing performance is roughly equal of a HD 7870, not just the GPU alone. And those available eight CPU cores are clocked at what was it? 1.6 GHz? That is very low. Current gen consoles comüuting performance is largely tied to parallelization, because clock for clock, each single core is pretty weak compared with the standards of PCs.

Consoles as far as the hardware is concerned are about equal to a PC of the 500-600 price range (and that is largely contributed to the fact that consoles are sold at a loss, the companies make their money with the games, licensing and the subscription services).

It should also be noted that citing the Steam surveys is not necessarily applicable to compare the relative performance of consoles to PCs because not all PCs registered to Steam are used to play the higher performing games like the ones that come out for consoles.

The point is that a great many people are playing on those 500-600 dollar PCs and not high end gaming machines. The survey simply points out that 87% of the gaming public on Steam are not playing with high end machines.

For example right now I am playing DAI on a Toshiba laptop with an AMD A6 Quad core processor running at 2.4 GHz and 8GB of ram Radeon R4 graphics with 750GB hard drive no SSD. Why because my other machine decided to go to the computer graveyard and I have other concerns that need my money's attention. In 250 hours of play I have two CTDs otherwise virtually no problems.

Gamers I know who are playing on PS4 and XBox1 are having virtually no problems with the game while the PS3 and XBox 360 gamers are having nothing but problems.

The game should have never been released for PS3 or XBox 360, but from a financial point of view ignoring that audience may have cause a bigger ground swell. But that is speculation.

The problem is not the hardware but the optimization for each platform especially the PC if you are using Keyboard & Mouse. Using a controller with the PC for some makes the controlling easier.

I am use to using WASD keys and a mouse in combination because many early cRPGs used that combination. But if you basically played DAO and DA2 (basically point and click), DAI's control system is different.

The problem comes when one ports from either platform to the other and do not properly optimize for the platform. The same thing happen in reverse for the PS3 and XBox 360 gamers with DAO. The game was not optimized for those platforms and it showed.

Actually the PS4 is sold with gains amazingly, that's why the Playstation is making Sony money instead of losing. But 99% of the time you are correct that software sells make up a bulk of the profit.

Just the PS4 or XBone too?

Considering how the previous generation was sold at a loss and that the current gen is roughly comparable to the said 500-600 price range desktop PCs, I am a bit surprised they are sold at a profit for their price.

But you could buy a pc and the game would be even better like the old days.  and umm yea it would be better if you bought a PC.

A console cost's 350-400 a pc is $1000 or more and I need a new one every 2 years to keep up.  So no thanks if games go to just pc a lot of gaming companies will be going bankrupt.

I concur that not all PCs on Steam would ever be likely to have DAI running on them. I don't really know what the hardware profile of DAI PC owners looks like. EA does, thanks to Origin, but I doubt they're going to tell us.

But I hope it's not controversial that a 16 GB RAM requirement would leave out an awful lot of current gamers.

pc's need constant upgrading to keep up with new games that's why I moved to consoles.  I looked at a top line gaming pc a few months ago it was $1800  so I got me an xbox one and a ps4 instead and still had cash left over.   pcs are the more expensive and can be a pain getting the right hardware.  Play what you want I prefer consoles for games and viewing my movies.  Its much easier and cheaper.

I built myself a top of the line PC that lasted me 5 years before I had to upgrade and to be honest, it could probably run DA:I(obviously not on max settings =P)

Play on whichever platform you prefer, but claiming PCs need constant upgrading is just not right provided you build a custom gaming PC.

I think if they focused just on pc and not on all platforms much more could have been done.  What do I know Im just a PC gamer that gets stuck with crappy ports on average 5 times a year.

Feel better now?? DA was ALWAYS meant to be a console game, DA:O came out for the xbox 360 long before it came out for PC's, they just made it a PC game to make more money. I get so tired of whiny PC gamers complaining about console gamers. If you don't like the game don't play it.

It's called volume pricing. You can sell a product at a lower price as long as enough people buy it to make up whatever loss you might get by selling at a lower price point. I'd rather pay $400 for a console than $1000 or more for a PC that requires constant gaming software upgrades in order to play a game. JMO

In this time, if I saw a game requiring 16GB RAM to play, I'd most likely laugh and point at it saying things like "optimization, heard of it?".

Though as we progress down the road, hardware specs will gradually increase as they deal with increased software performance and system requirements. DDR4 memory modules will pretty soon harbour 16GBs worth of memory on a single module and the current DDR3 RAM is getting dirt cheap. In two years time, I'd reckon that 16GB RAM will be the new standard just as 8GB is right now and I don't see games even taking full advantage of the data throughput you get from 8GB RAM, let alone 16GB right now.

You mean the game that actually came out on the same date for Xbox 360, PS3, and PC, was designed as a spiritual successor to a classic PC only RPG, and was heavily criticized for being a bad console port?

That's the game you're calling a "console game"?

I think you might be thinking of Mass Effect =P

Yeah. I update my PC every 5 years, roughly.

Then again, I did spend a lot more than the 1000 dollars he suggested for a PC. But I got everything new, including two new monitors.

Though I should probably say 3 monitors, as I bought a new tv too and hooked it up to my PC.

Given that DA:I was released on last gen consoles as well is a point of consideration.

I seriously doubt a PC-only release would have ever been possible, but a next gen + PC release? That might have been a much different end-product.

I will concede on 'easier and cheaper'.  They are.  But 'constant upgrading' being needed?  No.

I have only just last year upgraded my RAM, PSU and GPU.  My PC which is a FX4100 QC 3.5GHz cost me NZD$600 and came with a AMD 1GB 7750, which, while not amazing, happily ran almost anything on medium or high settings, including Witcher 2.  I bought that PC 3 years ago and it wasn't 'the best possible' at the time, either.

XBox One can't run DA:I optimally (limited to 900p), I think even PS4 is limited to 1920x1080 and "High" settings??

My totally not top of the line PC is running 1920x1080 and everything on Ultra or Fadetouched and getting an average of 48FPS (and a minimum of 36).  Aren't the consoles locked at 30FPS?

Consoles will always - I think - be cheaper and easier because of unified hardware.  Using PC is a tradeoff.  Yes, it can cost more and there is some research involved.  It really comes down to whether or not you feel that extra cost and effort is worth it for a significant performance boost.  I feel it is.  Perhaps you feel otherwise.  That's cool, but saying they require constant upgrading is demonstrably untrue.
