Not much of a scuttlebutt or anything just a question out of curiosity. Origin introduced the idea of a PC who could come from a variety of different walks of life, which was lost in DA:2 because of an attempt to tell a more personal story. It liked this approach as it brought something new to the table. However, I still like the old formula (when its done right) of having someone come from the same place, with the odd variance, and going off to many different places. DA:I tried to combine both with having the PC coming from different locations and trying to include differentiations in the play through to reflect that, it didn't quite work as well as it should have.

So my question. Which is a better use of a person's origin game wise, to come from a multitude of different areas and come to the same point or to start from the same point and branch out in your way depending on origin. Do you like your origin to play a part before or after the real start of the story?

Just my curiosity, you don't have to give any in depth explanations I just ask we keep this civil.

EDIT: Don't know how to add polls sorry

I'm going to go for --- I like both styles depending upon how each is executed.

Kind of a non answer but it really DOES depend on the individual game for.

I understand, that would be my default. A small clarification then. DA:4, regardless of where or when it is set, how should it handle its origins?

The origins stories were probably the best part of DAO, after Ostagar the origin thing was mostly unused.

DAI starts pretty much at the equivalent of Ostagar - given the story they cant show you much of what happened prior character creation (it probably was not very exciting anyway). On the other hand the game seems to recognize the origin bit more throughout the game. Even little detail like some of the NPCs using my main characters last name was a nice touch.

As for DA2, I still like my Hawke more than the Warden and the Inquisitor combined...

I liked the different races and origins in DA:O & DA:I  I think they really need to combine both though.  Let you play through your Origin as well as give you many dialogue options about it through the game.  DA:I did a good job of really letting you make your own backstory, and acknowledging it in the game more than they did in Origins.

If you were a noble you could be one who embraced the life a court, hated it and avoided it all together.  If you were a non believer you could say your parents didn't really care, if you are a believer you can say your parents are very religious playing into your role as a believer.

If you're an elf I enjoyed the conversations with Solos telling him that elves are better then he thinks they are or that he's right.  You can say you're being treated well by the inquisition or being disrespected. You can have conversations with Cassandra about believing the maker exists or believing in your own gods.  Tell Vivienne your mages were treated well and never caused any trouble.

These were things you just couldn't do with Hawke.  Hawke was pretty much a preset character where you could control the personality, but was still the same preset character whether you chose to make him/her sarcastic, neutral, etc.  Probably why I never felt attached to Hawke at all.
