I like the "old" artists (old as in... dead ;) ), especially Rubens. I find his mythological paintings fascinating. They are full of drama and I like it when paintings tell a story. Furhtermore I'm quite fond of the lighting and the colours in his work.

The Fall of Phateon (1604, National Gallery of Art, Washington)

Spoiler

As for more modern artists, I like the work of Benjamin Lacombe, a french illustrator. (Although some of his pictures are bit spooky).

Benjamin Lacombe seems interesting, thanks for sharing

About dead artists, personally I don't know much about history of art :P , only one or two painters (Dutch) whose pieces I saw in the museum a few years back. Here are some of the pieces I really love, they painted realistical depiction of daily life & events. The colours are quite subtle & I just love 'em.

Jan Vermeer's The Art of Painting (Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna, Austria)

Spoiler

Jan Vermeer's Geographer (Städelsches Kunstinstitut museum, Frankfurt, Germany)

Spoiler

Rembrandt's Night Watch (Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam)

Spoiler

There are also one Sumie (Japanese ink) painting I love:

Hasegawa Tohaku's Pine Tree (not sure where it's located, it's one of Japan's National Treasure)

@Caja I also love Benjamin Lacombe! I follow him on Facebook and when finances allow it, I'll buy some of his books. Btw, if you guys have Facebook I strongly recommend following this page: Buscando el cuadro más bello del mundo ("Searching for the most beautiful painting in the world") It's a Spanish page but it usually has little to no text, and everyday they post many gorgeous paintings. Really good as source of inspiration and artistic education!

As to modern artists, I also love the works of Yoann Lossel and Miguelanxo Prado (if you have the opportunity to watch his movie De profundis, it's one of the most beautiful things I've ever watched)

A very important aesthetical influence of mine is the ligne claire style, mostly used in comic books (most famously Hergé) What I'm trying to achieve as my personal style is something between this and the posters of Alfons Mucha. Not that I'm going to be anything like those great artists, but I love the combination of strong lines with strong colours and it's what I'd like my drawings to look like.

Among classic artists, my all-time favourites are the Pre-Raphaelite painters; I'm a total fangirl of Dante Gabriel Rosetti.

I have to go to bed now, but soon I'll be adding some of my favourite works.

I just stumble into these treasures... best find ever since I've been in Tumblr. Whew. No artwork had ever affected me this much... the colour & ambience. I feel like I'm there.

Also, that Nantes is my favourite place in the world... Best place ever, best summer ever. A name that brings thousands good memories.

EDIT: Just found the song titled with this place and fall in love with it directly.

@Cerulione--wow! Those artworks are really cool, I love the bright colors and atmosphere.

Also... nug with a pearl earring. I've seen everything.

OT: I really love the paintings and linearts of Fernando Amorsolo.

Oh wow, that's a style he got there! I really love his colours, thanks for sharing :)

after Nug in the Pearl Ear rings... Now I'm expecting MonaliNug... rather...

It's weird to say this but I'm really attacted to arworks who can depict athmosphere really well & got a distinct personality. The painter you shared got it, Nasskein (which draw the guy on the bike with that girl) got it, therealmcgee &  emegustart also got it. I don't know what they got in their artworks that actually makes them different from other artists, at least in my eyes.

Sometimes it feels also weird to say but I really wonder whether it's because they seems to be people who enjoy life. I saw some message boards of some of these artists and often "lurks" on lifestream when they work. These three (mcgee, Eme & Nesskain) seems to love life in general & enjoy what they do.

Ooh, what about a lady with, not an ermine, but a nug. Like Leliana and Schmooples!

And yeah I get what you mean about those artists being people who enjoy life and are happy. From my experience with artists' biographies and art styles, people who are enjoy life tend to produce art that has a bright/light atmosphere like the artist that you shared. Like, you can really see how they cherish life...? If that even makes sense.  :P

I'm posting a bit of concept art ('cause I love concept art :D ).

I chose these pictures because they all have something to do with perspective (which is still a nightmare for me I must say; I can't even get the perspective of a flower pot right. That's probably the reason why I'm so impressed.)

Dragon Age:

Wow, the Viscount's Keep, I wish it had been that impressive in game :(

Some of the works that have deeply influenced me:

Venus Verticordia and Proserpine, by Dante Gabriel Rosetti

Spoiler

Alfons Mucha's posters

Spoiler

Monsieur Hergé (see that drawing? I could stare at it for hours)

Spoiler

Ophelia, by John Everett Millais (the Pre-Raphaelites again)

Spoiler

Anything by Joaquín Sorolla, but specially his Mother. It's a pity that pictures don't really capture the painting, I've seen it live and it's all different shades of white. Unbelievable.

Spoiler

Aubrey Beardsley's illustrations for Wilde's Salome. It's been long since I don't draw that way, but the last years I was drawing before I completely dropped it, most of my drawings were in his black lines on white background style.

Spoiler

Aaaand finally for now, few things game me the urge to draw when I was a kid as John Tenniel's illustrations for Alice in Wonderland did.

Can't find any good photo/repro of this one so...

Jules Cesar traversing the Rubicon, -49 BC. The real piece is huge (about 4 to 5 meter tall), by Paul Chenavard. Charcoal & sanguine on canvas. This was originally a "study" done as preparation for mural decoration in Pantheon in Paris but the project got aborted by Napoleon. This drawing is at Lyon's Fine Art museum.

Spoiler

It's the piece who got me amazed for about half an hour straight.

@Ceru that's impressive  :o I can't even imagine how one can make such a big painting like that, and not even oils that you can use paint to cover large areas. I guess it was transferred from a smaller sketch, but when I think of the problems I have to fill just the half of an A4 sheet... just wow! I also bet one could spend hours just studying the light and shadows.

Apparently it was something for a fully painted mural for a National Monument so the size's huge. And the amount of detail is actually overwhelming. If you see it very close, you can see very faint trace of shading for everything (the veins of Cesar, the plants, the rocks etc) but if you look at it from far away to see the integrality of it, no details are seen. The details are just softly traced. This piece is just overwhelming.

I always have soft spots for Roman subjects ;)
