I have yet to buy BG2 EE, for alot of reasons. Still got the original on disc, and the version from gog and it works great on W7. Abit skeptic on dropping cash on the EE without knowing what it does. It says on the BG wiki that there are more than 340k new words written for the EE. What does that mean? Is it the new companions they added or have they altered or rewritten the story?.

What do people here think of the EE version?.

The basic storyline is not altered at all, but they have added some new NPCs and written additional dialogue and action for those.  They've also got some new character classes.

They've made quite a lot of minor game play changes - some of which I like, but some not.  They've also improved the look of the game slightly and added some convenience features (such as larger stack sizes and bags with greater capacity).

Overall I would say that the Enhanced Edition is marginally more difficult to play than the original, but of course you could always add one of the host of mods to make it more difficult if you wanted to do that anyway.  I wouldn't say that it's a better game than is available with the original, but it's different and you may well like that - it also has much more active Forums than these.

Sounds good, was afraid they may have altered the main story, which would be a disaster. BG2 is one of my favourite games of all time, so abit more sensitive subject when it comes to an EE of the game. Are these the same companions they had in the BG EE? If so i don't mind.

Larger stacks and better capacity sounds nice though, i remember on my ranger that my inventory used to be full of arrows, couldn't carry anything else. What kind of mods are out there? And can they be used without risk of crashing saves etc?

If you have the Mod, BG2 Tweaks, you can get unlimited stacking of gems, arrows, bullets, scrolls etc. That mod can not only be installed in BG2, but also in Tutu and BGT. Tutu and BGT allow you to play BG1 with the BG2 game engine which is why you can install BG2 Tweaks there.

The mods, of which there are hundreds, allow you to have extra NPCs, more quests, better visual effects and the like.

Here is what BG2 lets you do:

~BG2_TWEAKS/SETUP-BG2_TWEAKS.TP2~ #0 #1036 // Make Cloakwood Areas Available Before Completing the Bandit Camp -> All of Cloakwood Except the Mines: v14

~BG2_TWEAKS/SETUP-BG2_TWEAKS.TP2~ #0 #4071 // Consistent Stats: Viconia -> Use BG2 Values: v14

You yourself choose which of these options to install.

There is a thread on this site devoted to mods which is most helpful.

I would always have BG1 NPC Project installed as it improves BG1 no end.

Some mods are a little buggy, but most are fine. They don't usually cause game crashes.

There are some mods that conflict with each other but they are well documented. In those cases you have to choose between two mods.

I have so far not bought EE because there are so many variations of mods that I have not tried yet.

However, I might just splash out as soon as I know that EE is bug-free.

EE is the best thing to happen to BG.

EE is pretty cool. Let me try to break it down.

Advantages:

Pretty interface.

No modding required.

New Black pits content is quite fun.

Lots of small improvements.

Disadvantages:

Doesn't run as well on old rubbish video cards :P

In fact I've just installed the original BG2 on my linux/XP box because BG:EE lags on the admittedly aged video card, a Gigabyte Geforce 7200 256Mb, which scores a fairly pathetic 40 on Passmark.

The increased stack size in the EE's takes away from the immersion. Arrows stack to something like 80 and potions to 20 or something insane like that, it's just laughable.

The "enhanced" part of the EE barely did anything if you ask me. They didn't touch the bad pathfinding problems. They didn't add any interjections or banter to the NPCs, which is one of BG1's biggest drawbacks compared to BG2. They kept the XP cap for BG1 but once again it uses the ToB cap for SoA, HLAs remove all challenge from the end of SoA. And one of my biggest complaints is they could have remade the BG games in a modern engine like unreal engine 4 or source and made it unbelievably cool but they just released a retail version of tutu and said give us money. Bleh, I don't like the EEs..
