It doesn't seen to make any sense. It was called the Taint in DA:O, DAA, DAII and all the books, then they rename it? I could understand if that's simply what people who didn't know the proper name called it that, but even Morrigan says "Fiona removed the Blight from her blood." She would absolutely know that the proper name for it would be the taint. Any ideas?

"Studies on the Taint" does have an interesting ring to it.

 

In DA2's prologue, I recall it being referred to as the "corruption".

I always presumed the taint is what the darkspawn carry and spread. It is what's killing people (also sharp objects do) and the Blight is when the markdowns wake an archdemon.

That piece of paper was written by the Venatori aka Tevinter. It could imply that they don't differentiate between the taint and the blight, because they happen together anyway, or they don't use the word taint. We don't know. It's a foreign culture with different darkspawn lore. 

 

But the taint and the blight are still different, albeit connected things. Corruption would be the taint, I think, but if I remember correctly, the terms have been used interchangeably in the past, often by common people: blight, taint, corruption.  

 

It could be the case that only people who actually study the taint would call it the proper terminology, everybody else doesn't really care. They only know that you can die from the blight: killed by darkspawn, infected by taint- might be the same to the people. 

 

Grey Wardens should differentiate, however.

True enough, but to not refer to it once throughout the entire game as anything else seems like BW completely did away with the other names

Personally I don't see this as that much of a problem, such as how lycanthrope is another name for werewolf, means the same thing just different wording.

 

Also I believe corruption was the original term used by Tevintar during the first Blight when people didn't know what it was.

Yeah, but how often do you actually encounter anything taint/blight related? We do battle the darkspawn a couple of times, but not in the presence of anyone who would care about the difference. And there weren't that many codex entries about it. The last blight happened 10 years ago, so people might have moved on and care about the giant hole in the sky more than correct darkspawn words. 

 

I don't remember correctly, but doesn't Bianca later mention something "tainted" rather than blighted? She should use the correct terminology, she is a researcher.

No, Bianca says "it has the Blight" when talking about red lyrium.

 

I've wondered the same as OP. I don't even remember if anyone uses the word "taint" in Inquisition, whereas "blight" is used by several people from different background, and almost always in the sense where Origins used "taint". It was probably done for consistency, I remember DA2 using the two interchangeably and adding "corruption" to the mix as well - I believe Bethany says something about Malcolm dying "from the Blight", even though he had died before the Blight even started.

I imagine it has to do with how ridiculous people talking about the taint sounds if you are familiar with the slang (?) of taint being a specific portion of a person's crotch between a person's genitalia and *******.....really I was trying to write a post recently talking about the blight and was originally using taint, but when reread it just sounded ridiculous so I changed it to blight.

I kind of use the word Lycan since it does sound better to me at least.

I am find it amusing that people think the blight and "the taint" are the same thing. In fact the taint is the corruption the darkspawn carry with in them, which is also in the Warden's that drink darkspawn blood. "The Blight" name is given to the horde of darkspawn that run up to the surface under the control of the Archdemon.

i always found curious what they would call the taint in portuguese as it doesnt translate well, whereas the blight does. in portuguese the taint would be translated into something like smear, dirt. but blight can be conjugated into a verb or used as substantive and pass the idea of a plague, something that infects, ruins.

That's a good point. I just checked, and they don't really differentiate between the two in German. They use "Verderbnis" for the Blight and "Verderbtheit" for taint, although that's just a variation of the noun "Verderbnis". They do use Corruption though, as in the people are being corrupted by the stigma of the Darkspawn. It sounds much more dramatic in German.

I think the words are simply interchangable. Probably, in the old form of the language, they were different: "The Blight" is what it was called when an Archdemon rose, and "the taint" was simply the corruption of the darkspawn that turned people into ghouls. Over time, it just became accepted shorthand. Since the only time people ever really experienced the taint was during Blights, they just called it that. Either would be understood.

The Taint is the corruption itself. The Blight is the event when an archdemon rises. Like in real life though, some people use the terms interchangeably.
