The Taint is the corruption itself. The Blight is the event when an archdemon rises. Like in real life though, some people use the terms interchangeably.

Kinda like how Dorian keeps getting annoyed that the "backwards Southerners" keep inaccurately referring to all Tevinter mages as Magisters.

I guess they could just be using the term as a shorthand instead of saying Blight-sickness, which has been said in previous games when referring to people who've contracted the Taint? I swore that I've heard characters in earlier games mention "catching the Blight" though, but I can't recall who might have said that?

Dorian: ~spit-take~

The voice actors probably went through too many takes talking about "the taint".

Does anyone beside the GWs and Flemeth/Morrigan speak about it as the taint?

With the exception of birds, there are no non-killable critters in the game. I suppose if rabbit fur was a crafting item they'd be everywhere.

Yeah but lycanthrope sounds like some kind of flower.

Oh what a lovely bouquet of lycanthropes.

But indeed sounds cool for some people.

Because us gamers are very silly people and no one can say taint with a straight face or thinking of of the other meaning of taint. It had to go.

I figured it was because taint is also a term refer to certain parts of a person's privates so they started using blight instead.

DING DING DING!!!!

The Taint is the physical act of possessing the illness.  The Blight is the military attacks by Darkspawn.  At least this is how I see it.  I don't think they changed the name of anything.

@Nefla: Suppose this could be general cultural progression like 'Shell Shock' is now called 'Post Traumatic Stress Disorder'.  As George Carlin said, kind of destroys the seriousness of the condition doesn't it.

I'm almost certain there is a difference, still.

It isn't called The Fifth Taint, ever. It's The Fifth Blight.

The tain causes blights.

Well I hope you don't have five taints. Would be kind of disturbing if you did. :P

Because it was way to easy to make sexual puns about The Taint?

Taint, corruption, and blight are all different.  Taint causes corruption much like HIV causes AIDS.  Some people, like Leliana, are resistant to that corruption even if exposed to the taint.  So taint is the "virus" and corruption is the "disease" it brings on if the body cannot resist the "virus" that is the taint.  A blight is an event.

*sigh* I love how much unintentional comedy there is in this thread from people who I can only assume have only read the first post and go on to describe the taint in detail. *snicker* exposed to the taint...

You know that comes hand in hand with not being a native English speaker and only knowing the dictionary meaning of words?  ;)

"Taint" isn't listed under the slang meaning, but a rather innocent one.

True, but in Inquisition, everyone uses the word "blight" where Origins would have used "taint". For example, Bianca talks about the red lyrium "having the blight", and there are mentions of the Wardens "being controlled by Corypheus through the blight" and so on.

Oh I can totally understand people not knowing the slang. I'm just talking about the people who are posting now without reading any posts beyond post 1.

I imagine it has to do with how ridiculous people talking about the taint sounds if you are familiar with the slang (?) of taint being a specific portion of a person's crotch between a person's genitalia and *******.....really I was trying to write a post recently talking about the blight and was originally using taint, but when reread it just sounded ridiculous so I changed it to blight.

It's pretty much just people who think they're funnier than they actually are.

The writers changed it because they were tired of us making "Mastering your taint" jokes. We did this, we asked for this.

Is it cultural?  Generalisation?  For me it's probably easier to stick to my explanation, for myself, because I tend to ponder far too much!  Perhaps what the 'Blight' actually is has been misrepresented to us, kind of like Elven History...which we've just learned most of what we learned in previous instalments was largely BS.  Maybe the Blight has nothing to do with the Taint, Corruption or Darkspawn Sickness.  Now that's reaching but Bioware seems to be trying to pull out all stops and make us experience surprise at certain revelations.
