I have been a fan of bioware's since mass effect 2, and got into mass effect 1 after hearing praise for the second iteration and played the whole thing to get the full experience. I got into Dragon Age in a similar way by hearing about a promotional dlc deal for the blood dragon armor for mass effect 2. But on these forums, there is a metric ton of feedback all saying the same thing.

New games suck, old ones or games that emulate the old games are better. Go play KOTOR or Witcher or any other game that emulates "old school rpg elements".

I did. My assesses of the experience was simple. These old games have gameplay that really, really, really, does not want to be played. Or rather, doesn't want to be played in any way that it doesn't approve of. Everything is heavy and clunky in movement, the cameras aim at you rather than enemies as just the right times to get you crited into an early grave, actual combat doesn't seem to respond to your input but works on its own timer that you must accommodate. It's infuriating.

So how do you deal with it, besides the overplayed meme of "Get Gud", cause there's getting good. And there's getting good while appeasing something that actively wants to punish you for the attempt to get good.

First off, Witcher doesn't emulate old RPG elements at all.

But generally, it's done by focusing less on the gameplay, or at least combat, and more on other aspects, like quest paths or conversation choices. That I know of anyway. I personally found KotOR an enjoyable play--it plays the same way as DA:O after all.

KotoR has the the worst gameplay of any BioWare game in my opinion. I got through it and am getting through KotoR 2 currently because of the story and roleplaying elements.

Often when given the choice I'll just turn the difficulty down and faceroll my way through the combat so that I can get to the good bits of the story and dialogue. That's actually how I played Baldur's Gate(which funny story, even on the easiest setting a Sorcerer can still be 1 shot at lower levels if they get hit).

I find the new cRPGs coming out of kickstarter that emulate the old style to be a lot better, avoiding a lot of what made the old games really clunky.

Well, it's like this: Opinions are like...

Everybody has one.

So essentially, what you may consider "bad gameplay" might not be for others. And the other way round.

The world is, for example, full of people who don't have the least interest at all in doing things a 14 y old boy thinks are awesome.

But my general answer - to your question - for some games which have combat gameplay I don't care sh** for, like DA:I for instance, is 'role play'. That's the main reason I play those games anyway.

Put it on the easiest difficulty so you can fly through it without bother or mod it so you 1 hit kill.

Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one in the world who liked The Witcher's gameplay and disliked the story.

For a turn-based RPG, KotOR has great gameplay IMHO

The gameplay or the story?

I should have said "I enjoyed it too." I enjoyed the combat, though it was clunky. Also enjoyed the story, some of it anyway (Act 2 ftw).

I didn't enjoy KOTOR or the first Witcher's combat either, so I just played both on easy difficulty.

What was the point of pointing this out?

I'll never understand why The Witcher is always used for comparisons for "old School" RPG when that game plays more like an action game.

If you want old school please check out the following:

Wizardry Series

The Bard's Tale (Original Series)

The Ultima Series (up to 7 anything after that tends to go south)

Wasteland

Yeah not sure I have seen anyone make that claim, seriously what aspects of the Witcher games are we talking about here? They emulate old RPGs by actually being good as if that is a trait exclusive to old RPGs?

But as for the OP I guess it depends on the game, personally I have never been huge fan of KOTOR so I have no idea but usually for me I am able to overlook gameplay flaws in older games because they do thing most modern games just don't do.

Can't be it, I would hardly use the word good or better to describe the Witcher games.  But then that is my opinion so it's all subjective.

Depends on how bad the gameplay is to be honest and if anything else can carry it. Even then, if the gameplay is really back like AP then even great writing can't entice me to play it again.

I'd say that volume can be pretty important too. Neither KotOR nor the Old Republic mumorpuger had particularly good gameplay, but the mumorpuger just had so much more of it. That tedious grinding filler. I only managed to finish one class questline in that one.

I quit Alpha Protocol 30 minutes in. I so wanted that game to be good and it was like Obsidian didn't give a flying f*ck about controls and game mechanics. As to the OP, just put the game on easy and breeze through it.

This post shows how everything can be subjective to the person.  I played Alpha Protocol a dozen times and never had an issue with the controls, I had a lot of fun playing.... yes there are some small issues but I didn't let that get in the way.

If the gameplay sucks, then I sell the game on Kijiji
