Were the extra races worth it?

From what I've heard, only female elf seems to be worth it and that's mostly been due to Solasmancing being the most... Impactful.
So, now I open the gates. Was it worth the time and effort? Did it fit or did it feel tacked on? Did they just make your head canon more open since the option was in-game? Educate me!

I don't care to play as them, so I decided to ask you, the people, if there's enough variance between the races to have been worth including them, especially considering at one point the inquisitor was human only.

That's a tricky one.
On the plus side: Playing as a human is boring most of the time.. it's always good to be able to play as something different and create a personality for it whether it's elf, dwarf and Qunari. This is just my opinion but the way they've done elves in this game (as a PC choice, I mean) I'm not particularly fond of... dwarf and Qunari however, are awesome. Particularly Qun because you could never play as one before...
The downside: While it was great to choose between different races, it seemed to come at a price; personality-wise. Most of the time dialogue choices did not make a difference, though there were some rare moments but even then it pales in comparison to Hawke. Sure, Hawke only had three personalities to choose from but even then it was a different tone every time, and the dialogue always had a lot of depth to it where as the Inquisitor is pretty bland.
There were also a lot of silly moments that would imply that whatever race you picked, had little to no idea about their own race and culture. I did appreciate the inclusion of chatting to Josie about your background before the conclave, however. But most of the time you were pretty much a human inside of a dwarf/elf/Qunari's body.

As others have said, it's worth it to me. I never play humans and wouldn't have even bought the game had there not been race selection, so there's that. (And I'm not even going to get into how much more rewarding I feel the entire second half of the game is on an elf playthrough, or how much more I feel the Solas romance enhances the story--and Solas wouldn't have even been added as a romance if race selection wasn't added.)

Yes, worth it.
Hopefully it's something that can be expanded on in future titles. But to not be stuck playing a human, totally worth it.

Felt tacked on to me.
Yeah, it definitely was, since all races except humans had fewer armor options. Dalish had 3; one of each class, dwarf had 1 2; carta and legion of the dead, and qunari had a grand total of zero. And shitty hair options.
But i still think it was worth it, since humans are usually pretty boring to play as. I like a good underdog.
Edit: Dwarf have 2. My mistake. Thanks TEWR for pointing that out.

Yes, they were worth it. Not because of anything Bioware did, but because of what we -- the players -- can do to make up for Bioware's shortcomings in regards to them.
In my book, it's better to give the player extra race options so they can craft their own tale.
Though I'm also a supporter of limited racial options to better tell a story as well, a la Hawke. So meh...
dwarf had 1
Dwarf had 2. Legion armor and Carta armor.

I know the phrasing is antagonistic, but I can't think of any other way to put, so I apologize if I offend.

It limits role playing for me personally hence why I have a lower amount of DA2 playthrough's even though I quite like the game and Hawke.

Felt tacked on to me.
Wasn't it? I seem to remember BW announcing that the game would have a human protagonist only to much later add race options.

For those of you that this was a make or break decision, may I ask why that was? Was it because DA2 did it that way? Was it because despite everything else the game has to offer, aesthetics and minor dialogue changes mean that much to you?
I know the phrasing is antagonistic, but I can't think of any other way to put, so I apologize if I offend.

More or less. You'd be surprised how much people can grow attached to a racial option, and then observing the dynamics therein. How the world will react to an Elf isn't the same as it would a Dwarf, and people go forward with that.

Kinda because humans are pretty limited in what you can do in the DA setting(in my opinion) they are pretty much accepted everywhere and considering I am human myself its more difficult for me to create a different character since they end up similar most of the time.
While the other races have heaps of background and lore you can shape them from and it does not help that bioware keep going with the bloody human noble origin. Been there done that in the many other rpg's I played.
Plus I like some of the npc reactions and ambient dialouge you get when playing another race for example on my Qunari if I took a shot for every npc who goes "maaan your big/tall!" I would of died from liver failure/poisoning.
And how you get lower approval during the Orlais court quest if you are non-human its stuff like that I like. I feel DA is not just about humans its about everyone in my opinion.

It was okay. At first, I liked the concept of being able to play as a Qunari, but when I found out that there are no armor variants specific to that race it dissuaded me from playing it.

Definitely. In fact, the only play through that feels right to me is Dalish. I think every player is going to have their own preferred Inquisitor and being able to choose which race to play is a big part of that.
