Were the extra races worth it?

I'd be happy if they could implement non-noble human backgrounds. It's possible that this was their original plan for DAI before switching them out for different races.

I can imagine. As I said in a previous comment, I highly doubt the extra races were added without having some adversarial effect on certain aspects of the story structure.

Without the extra races, this game would have been a lot worse than what we got.

Not quite.

I do think it's a little odd that we haven't had a human protagonist that doesn't come from a noble family. Though I guess it's partly because the non-humans are hogging the other archetypes.

While Hawke did come from a noble family

He/she still counts as the rags to riches archetype

I'll try to explain, as long as no one takes it personally like I'm insulting their characters.

I prefer the arc for Lavellan from beginning to end. Mine is a mage, so for a Dalish mage, waking up in a human prison surrounded by templars is like her worst childhood fears come to life- plus a giant hole in the sky. She has the surreal experience of being proclaimed Herald of Andraste and of coming to the rescue of people who will always hate and mistrust her, as demonstrated poignantly by the Dales. And all of this is apart from the revelations in the game about elven heritage and the fact that Fen bleeding Harel was her companion and lover. At the end of the day, you do the exact opposite that everyone expected of you, and became a hero.

With Trevelyan, you're from a privileged family and sent to the Conclave because mummy and daddy said you had to serve the Chantry. A mage has more stake and is also an underdog, but not nearly as much as a Dalish character, plus you spent your whole life in a Circle so there's not a lot to work with in terms of back story. And at the end of the day, I find myself thinking "great, I'm one of the boring assholes who run southern Thedas, and I've just affirmed their opinion of themselves as being the rightful rulers of the world. Yippee." It just doesn't work for me.

Thats perfectly fine. Some of us can enjoy Trevelyans just as much as the other races.  You just hate humans.

I'm not saying I was bashed but I have had friends who have been bashed for it and I will always STAND up for them all call people out on their bull.

Its perfectly fine if you hate the Cousland Origins and hate humans but the fact remains its trendy and in fashion to hate on everything human.

If it was popular to hate on the other races people would be doing it

Personally I can't stand the Dalish and how the majority of the fandom have had a shrine to them.  I prefer the city elf origins.

I was happy Solas called out the Dalish for the errors and I was happy playing a Dalish that was able to question her beliefs thanks to him.

Yeah, I'm... I don't even know what to say to that.

Rather, I dislike the idea that we're forced to care about the ruling class of southern Thedas because for some reason that's what the mainstream wants to play every single game.

The Dalish have been on a shrine since Origins.    I am still bitter how city elves got the shaft.

if I sound mad please accept my apologies. I get sick and tired of the Humans are boring stereotype because its complete bull.

Its just very popular to hate on anything human.   I will agree there definitely needs to be a human commoner origin.

Yeah, it definitely was, since all races except humans had fewer armor options. Dalish had 3; one of each class, dwarf had 1 2; carta and legion of the dead, and qunari had a grand total of zero. And shitty hair options.

But i still think it was worth it, since humans are usually pretty boring to play as. I like a good underdog.

Edit: Dwarf have 2. My mistake. Thanks TEWR for pointing that out.

Qunari have Vitaar, which no other races can equip. Bull has a unique helmet that only he can equip.

I play dwarves in LOTR and WOW.  I tend to avoid them in single player rpgs.

I'm just trying to lighten the mood here with some humor. Also thanks to that ME easter egg I want a Krogan race lol

Funny thing is from a gameplay standpoint because of Vitaar it makes Qunari overall the best mages of the game. XD

Not in my opinion. I would have preferred fewer races and more depth of content.

On these forums? I don't think so.

I would have preferred playing a city elf though. Would have fit better.

And that's perfectly fine, of course.  But it goes both way, being thrown in jail as someone privileged who probably never was manhandled can't be a picnic and really while I appreciate that someone wants to play the "do the exact opposite that everyone expected of you" this alone doesn't make a story better or original, it's all in the eye of the beholder and you can do it  as a human too, nobody is stopping you.

You can play it in many ways: a naive awkward Circle mage who gets disillusioned by the end, a Noble who sees an opportunity to rise in power even if he is not Andrastian, a Noble who was suffocated by his family and now finally can break away, a Noble who really doesn't give a damn, the possibilities are endless.

Maybe the reason why the different races worked in DAO was because any race could be a Warden,  so it was more accepted than a profit of a mostly human religion. I guess I was ok since they tossed the line in saying "even Androste had help from the elves". So technically you might be seen as a helper of the maker? I don't know really it's all speculation.

I predict there won't be dwarves or Qunari in the next game. Just elves and humans but hopefully a dalish elf and a city elf and a human noble and a Human commoner.

"Best" and even "most relevant" are highly subjective terms. Human origin is the "best?" That's what you think. Anybody can make an argument for other origins. Human origins is more "relevant" because of Arl Howe? That's what you think. I found Arl Howe rather forgettable. He's just a lackey; other fans could argue that the Blight (which a Dalish elf is exposed to in his/her origin) or a mage playthough is "better" or more "relevant."

My only argument is that, yes, the more options are worth it. DA2 proved to me that a single origin is not necessarily better. A mage Hawke pretty much demonstrates that your background is what you make it, as I was the only person in Kirkwall who seemed to care that I was an apostate mage.

If more races are not worth it, why not just make the main character male-only as well? Wouldn't that support the argument that more resources dedicated to a single core concept hero would make a better story? Also make the male main character straight. Then you'll get better developed romances. No more wasting resources on "pandering" to minorities. Straight white male PCs are the way to go because you'll get the best story that will appeal to the core gaming audience.

It worked because multiple races was planned from the start in DAO, DA:I was human only until the extra year was added

They wouldn't have been able to add that much depth to the races without writing a lot of things

Considering we are going north its highly likely we are getting those two because dwarves have a good relation with tevinter and there are loads of Qunari up north. If they excluded those two I would be quite disappointed since going north will be a perfect opportunity for those two races.

I think it would make NO sense not having those races since we are going north, plus Qunari are quite popular considering the support of those two races on this forum and elsewhere i predict a lot of disappointed people if they go that route.

Hell I would be one of them and would put me back on the spot if I should buy the game or not.
