Yes, extremely. The reactivity and variety it provides has made DA:I extremely fun to replay. My first (and canon) character was a Male Elf, and I love how it came up and was important throughout the story when relevant. I feel like being a non-human Inquisitor makes the story so much cooler. You're rising from nothing. I haven't played my human character yet, and I think I'm only going to do the one. It seriously doesn't interest me at all.

I am really trying to play an elf but I cannot handle the comically narrow shoulders. Is there anything I can do about it?

The shoulder-shaming of Dalish Inquisitors must end!

I don't care to play as them, so I decided to ask you, the people, if there's enough variance between the races to have been worth including them, especially considering at one point the inquisitor was human only.

From what I've heard, only female elf seems to be worth it and that's mostly been due to Solasmancing being the most... Impactful.

So, now I open the gates. Was it worth the time and effort? Did it fit or did it feel tacked on? Did they just make your head canon more open since the option was in-game? Educate me!

Well they would have been worth it if their Armor had been fleshed out..

I agree, I just came from a thread discussing the pre Alpha footage...or more like everyone complaining about the people complaining about it. A part of me wonders how much of those pre Alpha ideas could have been focused on and implemented if they scrapped the other races and multiple IQ VAs

Yeah, I totaly get people interested in playing different races. I would certainly like to try them ( so far I have only done Human and Elf but I want to try a Dwarf or Qunari ), but I also see that in order to add more of one thing, something else has to be sacrificed. As is the way of things when publisher deadlines have to be met.

I guess I'm one of the few people who actually don't like the underdog pc... I find the idea of a nobody rising to power cliche. I much prefer to reenact the 'royals who actually do something' trope, hence I pretty much always play as humans of the best available social standing, namely warrior or rogue nobles. I did have a number of mage Hawkes and Amells, since you can play the same thing over only so many times, but nobles are my favorite.

I also can't deal with the 'huge head on a stick' body model for elves in inquisition either.

I feel that they should have focused more on the elves and human characters in this game and then qunari and dwarves(humans included) in the next game assuming it will be taking place in northern thedas

Well, I've finished the game as a dwarf and have gone half way through as a qunari, and frankly, the difference is almost entirely aesthetic. I'm probably going to suck up my distaste for elves and play one, perhaps that will change my mind (sincerely doubt it), but I can pretty safely say that I would have preferred the resources allocated to other areas.

Qunari and dwarves, while awesome races, just seem incredibly out of place in the story. They have literally no reason to be at the Conclave in the first place, and there is no way that a bunch of religious Orlesians would accept a Qunari Inquisitor as readily as they do.

War table mission specifies that Cadash was there for a lyrium deal. Mages and templars do buy the stuff.

And for those wanting to cut out extra races so humans can be catered to -- so what? They already have your money. Extra races bring in extra customers. The odds of players refusing to buy a game because there are multiple races to choose from are pretty slim. The odds of players picking up a game because there are multiple races to choose from are far better.

The same people that are complaining about the extra resource and time going into something else, other than the races, must also be the people who didn't want Solas(the only reason people say that the female (mage, has to match Solas' class, right?) elf has the best story) or Cullen. Correct me if I'm wrong, but those two characters were added to the romance status with the extra time. So maybe if we had that human only without the extra year, I'm sure there would had been bigger complains going on around here, since people love Solas/Cullen.

The funny thing is that from the look of it both of these romances seem to be very well thought out, you'd never guess they were a last minute thing, that kind of makes me pause and think whenever this  whole "allocate resources elsewhere" is that huge of a factor.

I geuss i expected more of a qunari like DA2's but i feel i got a generic qunari instead and i love qun, i was hoping to get a qunari pc in the next game so they could figure out how they want them to look(DA2's look was great) but i got a mix bag of human/elf on the giant side with horns

Well since I dont tend to play the other races I would say no but I know many others who enjoyed them so I'll accept that it's an optional feature that just isn't for me.

Races were worth if because of future games.

Although I disagree on people saying female elf is the best role to play because of a Solas romance. Female elf is good to play because of the revelations near the end of the game, not because of the liar who doesn't even see himself as an elf.

At least save the qunari for DA4 i felt we didnt learn much more about the qun or the people of the qun just IB telling us what he knew, i wish they saved a qunari PC for DA4

Definitely for me.  I think that the inability to choose a race and being forced into only one set beginning for my Hawke was disappointing.

Yeah, they were, it's a game set in a fantasy world with many different races and you're supposed to make your own character, limiting us to one race would almost feel insulting.

The argument that the Human protagonist makes sense to some players is fine, but please remember that there are those of us who prefer to play as a "fish out of water" and that the story makes sense to us that way too. Personally, if I play as Human, it's always as a mage because I need my character to be an outsider for me to relate to him or her. I'm also of the opinion that if a fantasy RPG does not allow for race choice, it feels a bit confining to me. Arguing that there would be more room for a richer story if the choice was Human only is speculation and not something that should be argued as fact.

Everyone has their own opinions about virtually everything and how whatever affects them, but to me this qualifies as one of the dumbest questions possible in relation to Inquisition.

I do not care what statistics suggest about how one race [human] may be the most commonly played by gamers. Human is the the one that I use the least. I will always prefer to play elf, dwarf and now Qunari, should they be available. I do human characters as well, but for the life of me I can't fathom why anyone who chooses to stick with a human pc, really gives much thought to whether that should be the only option??

I wouldn't call it insulting. There are fantasy RPG's that limit you to a single playable race and it works just fine. Hell, I even thought it worked for DA2, despite the overall mediocrity of that game. It all depends on what you want to do with your game.

I never said it should be the only option, I asked if people felt there was enough variance to justify their development, and why. I was just asking for opinions...

i'm not sure people want one race or another catered to as much as they want one race choice done really well

as opposed to the creative energies being diffused unevenly among 3 or 4 choices
