Well, I have to say that I am unable to roleplay a different character with the same voice. I might play the same character with different choices, such as siding with templars or mages, but I couldn't shape a different personality. Therefore, with just one voice actor, I would probably play the game only two times, female and male inquisitor. Now, on the other hand, I am enjoying my mistress Avaar after I finished my playthrough with lady Trev.

The biggest benefit of the multiple race option for me is the multitude of voices available, which would not have existed otherwise. I probably won't have a lot of different characters, but the fact that there are 4 distinct voices makes this a whole lot better, so I can associate my favorite voice with my "main" character, and then use the rest for alternates.

Seriously. Half of the game went out of the way to point out I was playing a qunari. People belevie that because you are a cretin race everything in the game has to hit you over the head with it to remind you of that and not even origin did anything close to that being how you race is ignored for most of the game. Remember, you are the inquisitor, one of the most powerful people in thedus with the power to execute anyone. No one is going to be dumb enough to treat you badly in your face unless they don't know who you are and there few time like that.

The damn Orlesians at Winter Palace sure didn't get the memo...

But regardless, this would work well if it was actually properly implemented. As it is, you basically get one line from Varric about how you're so intimidating, and personally, even playing a human noble I went 'am I? never noticed, people still expect me to bring them that potato they dropped before aiding the war against demons effort...'

I also actually think when you're a qunari you should be even more imposing, but less diplomatic.

Basically, what I'd want is certain paths and choices to be essentially race-gated, but then people would complain too, so eh, whatever.

I'm enjoying the game, btw.

No one is out to prevent you from having race choices out of spite.  The point is that the more choices there are, the less interesting those choices can be.  Game development is a zero-sum proposition just due to the reality of limited time and resources.  If you want four races, two genders, and three classes, the story has to accommodate all of that.  Sometimes they just punt.  That kind of seems to have happened with the Winter Palace mission in Inquisition where it just doesn't seem to phase anyone *enough* when your Inquisitor isn't human despite all the lore indicating that it should be a really big deal particularly in an environment where social status is everything.

Imagine instead of all these choices we only got two for Inquisitor: Human Hawke or new Dalish Elf.  Four VOs.  Two men and two women.  Just like now.  Except they are the original VOs for Hawke and two more added specifically tailored to the dalish elf.  In other words, proper Welsh or Irish accented VO to match the theme they've gone with since DA2.  I'm sure all the dwarf and Qunari fans will chime in that they would hate to not have been able to play those but the point is that limiting the choices isn't a "dumb" thing.  It's done for a very specific reason.  How much you value that reason is a matter of opinion.  But it's totally a rational thing and not motivated out of hating what someone else plays.

While all this is true, what it comes down to is that this is a roleplaying game and people put different emphases on various aspects of being able to shape their own custom character. I never play warriors, but I'm not going to suggest they cut the class. Obviously a balance is needed. Making the main character to one race is too restrictive IMO. At that point you might as well make it a fixed character, if people are so worried about the game offering deeper characterization.

Yes, it was worth it. I enjoy playing with female elf over human female but not because of Solas; wouldn't touch him with a ten foot pole, thank you very much. My lady elf always romances Cullen. The combination is just adorable.

I am actually intending to try Cullen's romance next time. I've had a friend tell me it's his favorite, so I'm looking forward to it.

I don't care to play as them, so I decided to ask you, the people, if there's enough variance between the races to have been worth including them, especially considering at one point the inquisitor was human only.

From what I've heard, only female elf seems to be worth it and that's mostly been due to Solasmancing being the most... Impactful.

So, now I open the gates. Was it worth the time and effort? Did it fit or did it feel tacked on? Did they just make your head canon more open since the option was in-game? Educate me!

Solas is the only reason I rolled a female elf. I had originally considered rolling a Dwarf and a Qunari, but I've since changed my mind. My canons are human 99.9% of the time (the exception now being the Inquisitor because.. Solas).

Edit: Also, half the time it felt tacked on, the rest it seemed to run smoothly for my elf.

Yes.

If it weren't for the extra races I would never have considered buying this game after having played DA2.

Totally worth it I can't not be a qunari now. So they better be in da4 or I will be really sad...

1. Key note..."Don't know who you are." The one that insulted you didn't know you were the inquisitor and even then they button up once they knew who you are.

2. Also, when you are qunari people make a point you are more imposing.

3. Also, some choices and dialogue are race gated..But none are major. DAO is just like that as well.

I think it's worth it in the sense that it's really nice not to be forced to play as a human again as is the case with most sci-fi and fantasy games. Unfortunately, since races were only added when Inquisition was delayed for a year it wasn't as well done as it could have been. I'm still impressed with what they did manage to do in such a short period of time.

Yep, go for it. Next to Dorian's, it's the best romance in game, in my opinion. Also, I always make my female elf a mage because it adds depth to the romance (concidering Cullen's background) and interesting dialogue.

Well i didnt really care when i found out that you can play different races again...Im boring, i always play humans) it wasnt why i bought the game, the reasons i buy bioware games are companions, variety of romances and story(though in my opinion it didnt seem very good in inquisition as in previous games).

But im not going to say it wasnt worth it, some people really liked it and bought the game because of it. So its not like they shouldnt have added it because a lot of players likes to play as humans:)

I love the idea and I'm fine with its execution - most of the time.

Characters do have different reactions to a human than say a Qunari, but I don't think it's as nuanced as it could have been.

Also: without a dedicated back-story (like in Origins), each character - regardless of the race - is a bit of a blank slate. Sure, there are options to explore their lives up to Conclave (mostly through War room missions), but it's not the same as living it.

It was a nice touch, but it definitely didn't have the strong impact like it did in Origins. If you take away the choice to select your race, the game would've changed very little.

I think it's worth it.

I also don't understand why people expected to get entirely different games just because the character's race is different. That just seems impractical to me. The only way that that would happen would be for Bioware to make 4 versions of the same game as sell them separately. Say Dragon Age Inquisition: Elf, DAI: Human, DAI Dwarf, & DAI: Qunari. That way you can play the same game that's entirely different by buying which ever version you want and they can sell a bundle that includes them all!!!

I liked the idea of playing as a dwarf again, until I played one. I did see him through to the end but the legs and feet are just comical to me. I could literally fir a human in my belly and was a thick as a druffalo above the wait, then the legs happened, like I was an elf from the waist down.

The qunari, ehh I liked the older version haven't tried one just yet .. nor elf cause I hate knife ears. Humans though, they sit at the cool table during lunch.

P.S Yes though, worth it, because of the starting bonuses mainly and because any kind of variation is a plus in my book.. if I could read.

Why not Qunari warrior or f!Qunari mage?  Both are definitely viable.

As for the m!Dalish body-style... yeah, I'll give you that.  Wish BW would fix that.  Maybe in the next patch?  It's supposed to be the biggest patch yet...

I don't understand it when people say they didn't like the extra races because there was too little armor variety. The answer to your problem is more armors, not fewer races. You can have both. I get it that it would take more resources, but it's not something unheard of in games. Didn't they say they liked Skyrim a lot? There you have an example.

DAI is a very uneven game. Too many areas and too large with too little substance in them. Exquisitely detailed facial features in the CC but dreadful hair. 100+ hour runs yet the main story feels short. More races than ever but insufficient gear for each. That is the problem, not the races.

   If only they had the time because I think if they did, each would have separate scripts / dialogues and possibly different outcomes.  One can dream. ;)

Nope they were not worth it its a waste of resources this is probably
the reason why the Inquisitor is so bland

I would rather play as a human that has depth but according to some pro races people here I'm boring lol

If they don't return to a silent protagonist (and offer us origin stories) so that we can properly roleplay as a Dwarf for an example (like in DA O where I appreciated the option even though my canon warden is a human)
DA4 will probably also have a boring protag because with two different voices per gender its just too much work

But people don't care about immersion (like with Skyrim where no one give a **** which race you picked) so I guess good for them
hopefully they won't ruin ME with it

I liked the origins but once you got to the main story there was very little difference between the races.
