I think elves were worth it considering how close they are to humans and their importance in the story. I'd be all for human only if it meant a personal story but I get the impression that it was never intended for DAI, especially since we were supposed to get selectable backgrounds instead of race choice.

It's absolutely been worth it for me so far. On my third game, having played as an elf, a human, and currently a dwarf inquisitor -- qun'ari next, or maybe next-next -- and I love the little differences. This alone makes it worth it for me:

Yes...But the Qunari and Dalish are still more of the underdogs at the party. ;)

But you used this example to prove that the DAI story as a whole can be seen as an underdog story but this particular mission also places humans in the same situation. The human may have a slight advantage (this effects your "points") but the Inquisitor being "the Inquisitor" ultimately is what has the largest effect on the outcome.

Look, I actually prefer to play nonhumans when I can but it just doesn't feel all that meaningful in this game (you disagree of course). DAO wasn't much better here but I think the Origin quests helped a bit.

We can at least agree an origin story would of helped with context.

To the Op qustion

Were the extra races worth it?

Yes but only if they are built well in term of personal Origins and Background and story progression,  for  me some races feels like a bad fan services.

No matter what races you decide to pick DAII Hawke and DAO warden's seems more alive than the Inquisitor who is only a plot device, the glowing hand is literally more important than him/her, is also the face of the Inquisitor's profile!

Is the inquisitor a character or just an Instrument?

Yes.

I played a city elf in Origins and your story starts out pretty crappy. Even if you become a big gudamn hero GW shortly after, it did help to set a tone.

I don't care to play as them, so I decided to ask you, the people, if there's enough variance between the races to have been worth including them, especially considering at one point the inquisitor was human only.

From what I've heard, only female elf seems to be worth it and that's mostly been due to Solasmancing being the most... Impactful.

So, now I open the gates. Was it worth the time and effort? Did it fit or did it feel tacked on? Did they just make your head canon more open since the option was in-game? Educate me!

It was absolutely worthwhile. I never feel right unless I'm playing as a member of the elven master race.

Nothing is crappier then the commoner dwarf origin...But ya the commoner elf origin is crappy...Especially if you playing a female.

That was what made me fall in love with Origins..

The idea of being able to kill that ****head. I had the biggest grin on my face when I finished the origins part... coupled with anger that I had to become Grey Warden, without any choice, just because a bunch of prissy-arsed nobles wanted my execution when I was only doing what was **right**.

Nt in my opinion. Time wasted shoehorning in races that ultimately have minimal meaningful reactivity would have better been spent on other things.

Save racial choice for the next installment, where it can be part of the design from the beginning instead of tacked on.

Completely worth it, from my point of view. I've only played dwarf and qunari so far, and I loved both.

I get to play Dwarf again. As for the Qunari they were dissapointing. No helmets or a unique armor.

At the start of DA:I I thought it was marvelous to play as a Qunari. I had expectations sadly on what that encompassed and I think that's where my mild disappointment stems from in terms of race. When I picked my Vashoth and set out I was curious as to how others would react. "A Qunari here!?, she gasped simultaneously dropping a stack of plates on the ground." I wasn't let down immediately as after just seeing the breach for the first time I was greeted with sneers and furtive glances. But I soon realized it wasn't because they saw a Qunari. Instead they saw something innocuous to my race. The situation may have caused a superseding of race in that moment in time but even afterwards I was hard pressed to find any one person that treated me differently than any other race.

So I set aside the Qunari as that bit of disenfranchisement was getting the better of me. Dwarf time. My hard nosed rogue will surely exhort a worthwhile response. Even upon establishing a background in the Carta vis a vis Josephine - It didn't impact much of anything. "You were in the Carta? That's behind you yes? Well, all right. Here's the key to castle."

Technical restrictions aside I didn't feel like there was enough to make any race or background unique. The reflection of each race's worldly standing as I've come to know them over the years was abolished for everyone being the same. This interaction as I describe it may be glib as there are, as I've read, many who feel vastly differently than I - It just felt jarring to me.

Oh boohoo. Remind me to say a prayer to your lack of imagination.

Oh boohoo, let me go and offer blood-sacrifices and my eldest child: so that you might get a grip on reality, and accept not everyone wants to imagine things 24/7

People can have an opinion just fine.

It's the way they phrase that opinion I take issue with.

"pandering to the hardcore headcanonners", as if that isn't a very douchebag sentiment.

Besides, I'm actually very critical of what Bioware did with DAI (racial options not being one of the things I'm critical of). What I do with DAI in my own mind is another matter.

Right, so it's okay to say Hawke/DA2 is bad, and was pandering to the casuals. But when someone else calls out Pandering, to headcannoners, it's bad? i had to endure 120 hrs of a bland PC personality, due to pandering to the hard-core headcannon' play style. And yes it was pandering because 4 different actors all suffer the same neutrality.

Using the word douchbag, is a bad sentiment in and of itself.

In my opinion they weren't. Every race has been relegated to being skinny humans with crushed arms, tall humans with horns or children with swords and daggers.

My Dwarf woman certainly does not look like a child. She looks like a woman in her late 30's early 40's that lived a pretty hard life ... only short, and with a rather ample booty. She has scars, wrinkles and a carta face tat. I am on PS4 so no screenshot but she wouldn't get carded for booze even given her short stature.

If you just look at their face, yeah, of course they don't look like kids.  But going purely based on the body-style alone?  I have to say, the female dwarves look like kids playing War.  imo, the devs went a bit too far on the 'short humans' angle for the dwarves.  Would've actually preferred them to stay stocky.

I was initially glad to have the choice between so many races, but after playing the game, I don't think it would be meaningful to play a dwarf or a Qunari. Elves and humans have the lion' share. The other races have basically no tie at all with the main story. Of course there is always a way to ropleplay this, and I will certainly give it a try, but I wonder if it was a good choice to put resources into this. Besides, I find a bit difficult to believe that Andrastian humans would have faith in you so quickly. Humans, ok, and Flyssa says, if you are an elf, that you have been chosen to make humans regret how they treat your race. But the others ?

I would have liked to see them stick to one race, honestly, though not necessarily human, but this is because I've grown to dislike the majority of people who are fixated on a race regardless of how well the story might be written. That said, I am enjoying my qunari a lot but I have to agree that writers were not entirely succesful in the very difficoult task of creating different cultural approaches for every different culture/race. I would love to see them try again, maybe with less options.

Definitely worth it.   In fact, I would have preferred they spent even MORE time on it and maybe dropped other aspects of the game to balance it out.

In fact, the human is the most boring of the available races, so I would even say that if they do ever collapse the game into a single race again that they choose from one of the other races and drop human.

Shouldn't have to say this, but this is my opinion, just as everyone else has an opinion.
