I can't see how you can say it was worth it, if we don't know what we missed out on as a result of the added race options.
Were the extra races worth it?

I would have liked to see them stick to one race, honestly, though not necessarily human, but this is because I've grown to dislike the majority of people who are fixated on a race regardless of how well the story might be written. That said, I am enjoying my qunari a lot but I have to agree that writers were not entirely succesful in the very difficoult task of creating different cultural approaches for every different culture/race. I would love to see them try again, maybe with less options.
Agree, I would prefer them to stick to one race and flesh out the character accordingly. I haven't played as anyone other than human yet but from what I am reading it seems that there isn't much of a difference to make it meaningful.

It was worth, but it still could have been done better, just my opinion

There is. I probably wouldn't be playing if they had forced us to play human only again. I was pleasantly surprised at the amount of elf-specific dialogue in the game, and the fact that there's a fairly important romance arc that's race gated made it even better. I hope we get the same sort of attention for dwarves in the next game.Agree, I would prefer them to stick to one race and flesh out the character accordingly. No doubt the same people who say "extra races aren't worth it" would scream if the only race available was a non-human.

Not really. Most of that money spent making those animations could've been on more hairstyle, I figure. The other thing is besides a bunch of lines here and there, the story remains the same for the Inquisitor and the ending always end with a victory and a few different slides that don't involve the race of your PC.

What "everything else"? I did one quick playthrough and 100% run and got so utterly bored by it that I haven't touched the game since, and I probably wouldn't even have managed that without the vain hope that qunari mage might play out differently than dwarf rogue. Was it because despite everything else the game has to offer, aesthetics and minor dialogue changes mean that much to you?
So yes, it works in the sense that it prevented me from binning the game after just one playthrough.

Hmm. Maybe I phrased it badly, I would prefer one race but not necessarily human. I haven't played as another race in DAI yet so I'll wait and see but overall I would prefer a meatier character with more options in that role. That would be my preference, I appreciate others have different views.

Same as others have said. Human boo boring. (Especially noble humans, every time, augh.)
I already am human, and having Hawke always human made different playthroughs bleed into each other since there wasn't any variable backstory to draw from. They didn't feel like individual people so much as one person of ambiguous gender with a serious personality disorder.
I agree that having ONE race would allow from more content elsewhere, especially cutscenes (since they'd only need to be animated once). But since the majority of people stick with the familiar choose human, any game without race options will go human. Like DA2 did. And I'm not really okay with that.
For all my playthroughs, I played humans only three total times in DAO - one of each gender for the throne, and a mage Amell to run off with Morrigan. Otherwise all my warriors were dwarves, all my mages were elves, and rogues were either (usually dwarves though, because elves are starting to be almost as boring as humans these days).
Yep, another thing that was pure pandering to the Hard-Core headcannoner's.
Wait, if you don't like to role-play, why are you playing a role-playing game?

I adore my female dwarf and I'm grateful BioWare brought back the option, BUT the armor variety is beyond bad. Especially as Qunari, only the three standard armors. That's a huge downer. They have different and exclusive armor in MP, how much effort could it've been to implement them in SP?
Besides this big flaw I'm glad that human only is gone.

Of course it is worth putting in the game, already there is so many limitations that for once, races are not limited.

I'm in the sentiment that i'd have not bought DAI if the race choices weren't there. It's part of the reason why I liked DAO so much. In Origins you got totally different backstories you could playthrough with the royal dwarf begin the best in my opinion. I don't see it as being tacked on at all. There are several times when I get elf specific dialogue choices or how people react to me. Especially with the whole chantry hating elves thing.

Yes for me it was definitely worth it, I enjoy playing as different races and no didn't feel tacked on, I missed being able to play as different races in DA2.

How about an elf main character or something else besides a damn human.

As long as it makes sense, I wouldn't mind a non-human protagonist. My dislike of elves is not because of elves per se (my canon HoF is a city elf), and my "dark" HoF is a noble dwarf. It has to work. If it doesn't, they have my blessing to take it away. Just that.

Race selection is always a must but plotwise only a human inquisitor is reasonable. But who cares about the logic. Worth it.

Yes, that's what I mean. It wouldn't have bothered me what race, I personally would prefer more options within one role.

Yes, they were worth it. Not because of anything Bioware did, but because of what we -- the players -- can do to make up for Bioware's shortcomings in regards to them.
In my book, it's better to give the player extra race options so they can craft their own tale.
Though I'm also a supporter of limited racial options to better tell a story as well, a la Hawke. So meh...
Dwarf had 2. Legion armor and Carta armor.
I agree although I mostly play as a human in these games anyway. Although having said that I'm thinking of being an elf for my next Inquisitor.

Yup, adding multiple playable races adds a level of depth to roleplaying that you simply can't get without the feature. Playable races is one of the best things DAI has done and I hope they do not abandon it again in the future.

Worth it? Definitely yes. (I would not have buyed the game if the races wheren't there) Races add replayability, help creating very different characters (a big help for roleplay.)
Could be expanded and do better? of course yes. But the road is the right one, and I hope more options/armour/dialogues based on races can came out in DLC, in patch or in the next game (I would have liked to have more convincing dialogues with Mother Giselle to refuse the chant of light she was forced on my elf, ot the chantry guided dialogues with Sera and Vivienne.)

Definitely a step in the right direction after the massive miss step Mass Effect clone that DA2 was.

Without question, it was worth it in my opinion. I have almost no interest in playing as a human in a setting where there are other races. It's the main reason that Hawke will always be my least favorite protagonist in the setting. I hated being forced to play as a 'noble' human. It's the least interesting scenario and, because of that, the game really never caught my interest. I would have bough the the game anyway if I'm being honest, but the return of race selection is my absolute favorite feature in DA: I.

DA2 was basically just a mideval Shepard in my opinion. Between that, the lack of originality in areas/reused areas/new art style, DA2 really pissed me off. Honestly I don't see the story every one keeps talking about. Just seems so played out to me and was lost amongst all the things I disliked about it.

Yeah, agreed. And it's a shame because Aveline, Isabela, and Carver are some of my favorite companions in the series, so it's a shame that (with the introduction of the Keep), I'll probably never play that game again.

Ironically, race options would ensure that Carver simply doesn't exist in the game, or only exists for the human protagonist. But then, this is true of a number of characters. I guess it's worth noting that the Legacy story would no longer exist either.
