No fetch quests in Witcher 3, how will that compare to DAI?

Providing that this article from PC gamer and the quotes holds true, there will be ZERO fetch quests like done in DAI that have no part of the story or no point or story to them.   I'll quote it....

"Nor have CD Projekt Red simply padded out The Witcher 3's Skyrim-exceeding open world with unimaginative busywork. They've systematically banished fetch quests from the game—or, at least, as much as a team can when making a high-fantasy RPG. It's one of the ways the Polish developers are refining their identity through the creation of The Witcher 3, where quest and narrative design is being meticulously worked and reworked right up until release. The philosophy is, if you need to have a fetch quest, make sure the story does a damn good job of hiding it.

“When we do have these situations, which is rarely, we compensate for it with the narrative,” writer Jakub Szamalek explains. “It'll definitely be an interesting story in itself – you'll be intrigued by the NPC's motives, and where this is all leading. Even when you have a simple structure it's something we're compensating for in the story.”The reason for abolishing fetch quests? CD Projekt Red don't like them much either. “We are trying very hard to limit such interactions of structures to a minimum because we don't think they're interesting.” Instead, they want to be radical."

Now it will supposedly be about 100 hours gameplay and 50 hours story.  Do you think they are trolling like Bioware did or will this be a really good story driven game?  The fact that the lead developer is a big fan of Gothic games, and Witcher 2 was very good, hopes are high.

Hopefully it'll mean that the quests that are there will be interesting, complex, and well thought out. But we'll just have to wait and see.

edit: hold on, they said, "The philosophy is, if you need to have a fetch quest, make sure the story does a damn good job of hiding it." So there'll be fetch quests, just story integrated fetch quests. Better than Mass Effect 3's "overhear someone talk about something, scour the galaxy in the middle of a massive war and bring it to them" fetch quests, so kudos to them for that.

I also like a few days ago the Witcher 3 developers commented on how they played DAI and it had way too many fetch quests.  That news was music to my ears :)

I agree that DA:I had too much fetch quest.

Witcher 3 despite what this guy says WILL have fetch quest. Fetch Quest are pretty broad. I just hope fetch quest are kept at a minimum.

Makes me feel good about putting the game in my wishlist. But this time I'm waiting for reviews et al before spending my money.

I don't mind fetch quests if I see they have some impact on the gameworld. Honestly I don't care if someone tells me to fetch a half dozen eggs, if at the end of the quest you see that npc making a damn omelet, I'd be satisfied. I just hate "do x for me while I stand here, and I will continue to stand here blankly after you have done x as well"

I don't think they are trolling. I wish them the best of luck on delivering on this note.

If they have heavily scripted boss fights again, I'll pass, no matter the quality of the story.

From what I've seen of The Witcher 3.....it has more interactive features with options compared to DAI. First thing I noticed, you can scale mountain sides....not as simplified and dumbed down as DAI either......

That's not quite correct about ME3. It's more like "hear someone talking about something -- or don't hear him, doesn't matter either way -- accidewntally stumble on the thing he's looking for, and drop it off in passing the next time you're on the Citadel to buy more weapons mods."

I don't belive them for one second. Side quests are just going to be go there and kill X number of something without having to gathering things.

Sounds good to me. Though I feel they are just going to be replaced with go kill this random thing quests the witcher is so fond of.

You probably can break down all quests into simple fetch and kill tasks. The point is, the devs try to hide these simple mechanics under additional layers of content and game mechanics (dialogue, choices, unexpected plot twists etc.) so they don't feel like busy work.

It's ironic, since fetch quests are probably the kinds of quests that make the most sense in a Witcher game.

Geralt's actual job description is: "go out and kill x monsters for NPC y in exchange for z amount of gold".

That said, "fetch quest" design is a staple of RPGs and I don't see that changing. What changes is context. The level of detail and/or interactivity within given fetch quests often determines how fun they are. For example, New Vegas is a game filled with nothing but fetch quests. But they were able to provide great context, attention to detail and/or interactivity within the quest structure so that it didn't seem dull.

On the other hand, you get MMO-style fetch quests which has become the standard of what people are talking about when they say 'fetch quest' - lazily implemented quest content with no/little narrative relevance used primarily to pad out the game. Which most people have said that DA:I has in spades.

While I mentioned New Vegas, I actually think Gothic series will be the games they will look to for inspiration with regards to quest design. Or Divinity: Original Sin if someone wants a more contemporary example (gameplay stylings aside, they share similarities with how they handle quest structures and their quasi-open living worlds).

As for how it compares to DA:I, who cares. DA:I was a mediocre game that got the accolades it did because of EA's PR department and the fact it was the only AAA RPG in a bone dry arena for most of the year. The best RPGs in 2014 came from the Indie and/or Crowdfunding scene - Legend of Grimrock 2, Wasteland 2, Divinity: Original Sin, Transistor, etc.

More to the point, the games aren't particularly similar. They're just more similar than the AAA alternatives (Bethesda's sandboxes). CDPR's marketing department likes to pump up the 'rivalry' to take advantage of BioWare's falling stocks and ease ex-BioWare fanatics into becoming CDPR fanatics. It works fantastically well to the point where there's almost an air of hostility between the two fanbases. CDPR fanboys can be insufferable, but there's nothing funnier than the butthurt of BioWare fanboys either. So IDK what "side" I'd go for. I just hope Witcher 3 is not a mediocre game, I suppose.
