@allthatjazz
Did you miss the part where i was not companies working on the car? Big difference

@psychevore
You missed the point like others here
If we allow video game companies to use pre alpha or beta as an excuse it will affect you at some point and when it does i wanna be there not gloat or bash you but to support you
I hope you find something you really love in a ME4 pre alpha when that time comes and they take it out of the game when it comes out
i will be here as a shoulder to cry on, if you think it will never happen to you then i have to ask you if you truly love the product

Then since Bioware is the company working on the game, and you're a random car modder working on something to order, what's the point of your analogy at all? Companies make changes to products before those products ship. It happens a lot, and you'd struggle to find a video game where it hasn't happened at all. It's a shame if you liked the thing that got cut, but there it is.

I think a lot of us would cry if we could see the devs wish lists of things they'd like to have had in the game, or couldn't quite get working so had to be cut.

But yes that Crestwood stuff does look like it would have been a nice addition.

Hold out hope for DLC I guess.

I think I've been around long enough in the gaming world to not fall for it. Especially since I know what pre alpha means.

And if I, like many others, missed your point, that means your analogy is crap.

As ten million people have already pointed out, pre-alpha footage does not equate to what will make it into the finished product, and unless someone is a complete idiot, they should understand that pre-alpha material is not set in stone. As far as I'm concerned, BW didn't do anything deceptive. The only person you have to blame for being uninformed is yourself.

As amusing as all this wringing of hands actually is, the OP's original contention was:

"The game that I actually bought is nothing like the game that Bioware's hype department sold to me..."

The truth is that the game that shipped correlated very well with the marketing, trailers, gameplay demos
and youtuber demos that aired over the months preceding game release.

To pick on some cut pre-alpha features and assert that without their inclusion, the game is 'nothing like' it was,

is either errant stupidity or trolling.

I can pretty much walk the path taken in the Crestwood pre-alpha demo (in the rain) including the cave up into the fort.

Other features to do with Keep expansion, such as crossing the poison gas areas in the Western Approach were

clearly re-allocated to be war table missions.

Much of this thread is arguing over trivia.

Same can be said about DA:I. If you craft things, then sure the game's going to be easy as hell.

At least in DA:I you can't lock creatures in a paralysis for 20 seconds.

True.

And maybe not but you can trap an entire group in panic mode with the right set up and if your using a lot of lightning magic and a rogue you can have people falling asleep every few seconds, Stun locking etc. Not that i don't have fun doing it.

The trick is to actually realise up front that pre-alpha means "not finalized and potentially subject to change" and thus not get hung up on it to the extent where your world crumbles if part of what is show doesn't make it into the final product.

Or, if you're unable do to so, just don't watch/read about anything pre-alpha related. I'd hate for gaming companies not to be able to release any kind of info/footage unless it's a "sure thing".

Expect to see more explicit warnings in future that early demos contain material that may not reach release, before and after demo videos.

That or no such demos at all.

Me too. Mass Effect is probably now at the stage DAI was when the Crestwood demo was shown.

But I wouldn't be hopeful of a similar disclosure.

Geez, stop with the complaining people. If you bought the game on Origin you can return it. Takes about 5 minutes. Say what you will about EA, at least it's better than Steam in that regard.

Eh, it's better than Steam. But it's only for the first 24 hours, so it's still not actually good. Odds are you won't have got to Crestwood in the first day unless you're a very dedicated player, I think

Indeed.

After 30 hours gameplay, reaches Crestwood:

Can't burn a boat ! This wan't the game I was expecting?

(and what's with the boats anyway? Were the Red Templars sailing in from the Free Marches with Samson in a slightly more convoluted plot?)

Really sad. I love hearing about game development and seeing what stage the process is currently at. Personally I don't expect early stage demo stuff to always make the final cut. I remember when it was going to be possible to import your BG character into NWN, or when ME1 was going to have interrupts. Things change, something I think people with a bit of common sense can respect. I really hope Bioware doesn't become more of a closed shop as a result of this, though I fear you're right :(

I would prefer that state of affairs. I want to sure of what will be in the game I'm purchasing (or pre-purchasing), not what Peter Molyneux 2.0 thinks or would like me to believe is in the game. Consumers could make better and more informed purchases if advertising, marketing, demonstrations, pre-and-alpha sizzles were limited to what the consumer was actually buying. If you have nothing to advertise, don't.

Or we can finally wise up as a demographic and stop pre-ordering at all. But since we can't trust/expect a large portion of the audience to do so, the responsibly thus lies with the industry itself to engage in better practices.

Then don't watch/read the pre-alpha footage/gameplay or information? Are you seriously saying that everyone should be punished because some people are incapable of dealing with it or understanding what it means?

People who pre-order games solely on pre-alpha information has only themselves to blame. There are PLENTY of information, videos and reviews released later in the process that you can use as basis for purchase instead.

Punished? Getting spanked because you took a cookie before dinner is punishment. Expecting a commercial enterprise to advertise only what they're selling is just ethical business.

It's really hard to grasp what pre-alpha means, isn't it?

Because pre-alpha is not advertizing what they are going to sell. It's basically an update of what they have been up to and are trying to get int he game.

I honestly don't think this is hard concept to grasp.

And getting a toy taken away from you because your brother is incapable of playing with it without hurting himself is also a punishment.

Some of us want that glimpse into the ongoing work and the creative process of the product. We want to see what's happening, what the developers are thinking and planning. Yes it creates hype about the game, but it certainly doesn't make the kind of promises you seem to think. To even suggest that a viewing of pre-alpha footage is on the same level as the videos Bioware released in the months before launch is ridiculous.

Yeah, don't bold the other part, which is way more important: it's not a promise of any kind.

And your point is...? Also you forgot the rest of the sentence: "but it certainly doesn't make the kind of promises you seem to think". Hype is not a bad thing. Hype is not the same as saying "this will be in the game 100% for sure pinky-swear promise". If you can't tell the difference then I don't even know what to say.
