So I have my builds and my stories. Bioware removed my possibilities to have both and just shoved their builds and their stories down my throat.
And are you seriously talking about stats from passives? +3 something? While ONE STUPID HAT can have 18 from a given stat? 6 passives in A HAT. I won't even talk about weapons or armor because ti would become ridiculous.
The passive stats are rather significant throughout the game though, only being overshadowed by crafting towards the mid-game and late.
This is the opposite case of DAO, where looted drops always gave miniscule amounts of stats with character stats being inflated in comparison. The best gear had +2 to all attributes when your character had 70 strength from leveling up...
I remember reaching 142 STR on my DAO Warrior.... Adding stats past the 36 point requirement for the best abilities felt trivial at all times. More like a chore on level-up really.
Still I suppose this is a personal preference. Considering this is a new change in DAI, I can understand why you would feel upset at the development.

But silly builds aren't gone at all. In fact there are more variations than ever with the delimited and level-independent ability web.
In DAO you followed a few distinct linear level-gated paths to gain your abilities, most of which you'd never use ( sustained abilities come to mind) and often didn't want.
It got better in DA2, but often you needed a lot of the tree (if not their upgrades) to access powerful abilities and abilities were still level-gated.
In DAI you can select any tree and progress through it at any point at time, allowing for very different builds even at early levels.
The only one that comes close is the Mage tree in DAO but that was arguably TOO versatile. They had to shave off some abilities and give them to warriors and rogues in the sequels to balance out class choices.
Ironically the ability limit in the UI adds to the potential builds because you have to actively choose what subset of abilities to use.
If anything DAI only increased choice in this regard. The only thing that's missing is limited weapons to classes, but I don't think that's going to change any time soon.
