I am an old school gamer... going on 25 years...

Why do Bioware keep 'Dumbing' down their own games? Seriously... I am curious...

I have been playing Bioware games since the company was a puppy.

I loved the first Mass Effect game and thought it was one of the pinnacles of RPG gaming.

I played the second and third games and in both they have the armour, weapons and skill tree 'Dumbed' to the level of a 5 year old.
Reduced to a fraction of their former glory.

I loved Dragon Age: Origins as much as I loved Mass Effect 1...

... but again, DAO 2 & 3 are a shadow ot the former incarnations.

Dumbed down to the level of a teenage console version.

WHY???

Your adult market has a lot more money than teenagers do... B)

Given your example Mass Effect, how was it dumbed down?

I'd really love to see you expand on that, because I have trouble seeing how anything was dumbed down.

I can explain my own points on how it wasn't, but I'd rather have you toss the ball on to the playcourt first seeing you claim it got dumbed down as the series continued.

Honestly DA:O and ME1 had a lot of fake depth. Many of the things you could increase or level up were wholly useless with like 1 or 2 paths everyone takes. While pretty much everything you increase in ME2/3 and DA2 (not played Inquisition yet so I can't comment on it) is of some use. I kinda hope they can reach the right balance of functionality and depth at some point.

I like how you used "retarding" in the title, but also felt the need put "dumbing" in brackets, as if to clarify what you meant.

Because it's so hard to tell what you're talking about without it.

Really.

It totally needed clarification.

Yup, the context just wasn't there by itself.

It certainly wasn't blatantly obvious.

Yeah those Mass Effect 1 skills where you put points in to get +2% damage or +1 second duration just required insane amounts of brain power to figure out.

What is dumbed down exactly? If it's simplfying the controls or leveling up system then I don't see what's the problem.

Actually the Golden years of Bioware was between KOTOR & ME2.

DA:I is good revival of Bioware. However "DA:I is good, but it has too many fetch quests." Where did I read that before?

ME3 may have been dumbed down but it was way more fun to play than its predecessors.

Holding a building with Atlases at the front and Phantoms at the back and the only thing stopping a sword in the gut is you and your bros dropping biotic combos like mad...

It's just simply...epic. The gameplay in ME1 can't compare.

This is probably why a lot of things were dumbed down in DAI including tactics.

I still don't know some schools of magic in NWN1 and haven't picked some skills and perks yet, but it's no excuse to wish them dumbed down in hypothetical NWN 3.

Dumbing down is really just casting the widest net to increase sales, even CD Projekt Red is going more casual.

Because they feel dumbing down games will allow them to reach a wider audience and thus more money.

Keep in mind dumbing down isn't necessarily the same as making them more accessible, the two are just conflated a lot.

The BG2/NWN -> KotOR transition was arguably their biggest dumbing down but also their most successful. KotOR caught on with the Xbox and propelled BioWare to a mainstream RPG force and a face of western RPG gaming.

The same happened with Bethesda and Morrowind.

Don't forge that weak ass combat. Fighting with the primitive mechanics of combat also requires more thought than the other RPG rabble.

When you say ME1 was the pinnacle of RPG gaming I'm amused.

The mechanics that were so primitive that it's almost a miracle that they worked and the countless of times where you could pick whatever in the dialogue wheel and absolutely nothing would change.. later titles didn't dumb down nearly as much as they cut away a lot of useless stuff that really dragged ME1 down.

Define old?

Old: Someone who played Pong 40 years ago.

That's in the dictionary. It's like the 5th definition of old. I checked.
