As others are also saying, there is so much in the multiplayer to enjoy, it just needs more than a momentary glance (or listen) to find it.

Dismissing the format that many people enjoy, on such a thin understanding, is shoddy grounds for a thread, to be honest.

I bet you'd have an elf tending your garden !!

Then kindly point it out please. I seriously took more than a momentary glance. I played it for several hours one day and never saw what you are talking about.

There are character descriptions in the character selection screen, e.g. here is the one for Luka, the Alchemist

whose background is from the DA2 Legacy DLC.

lukatext.jpg

The banter, and particularly the responses from the other party members does unfold over time.

I'm still hearing new banter. Yesterday I heard Tamar, the Reaver discussing Kolgrim from DAO's Dragon Cult.

Shame you didn't like it.

Your thread title seems to suggest that MP is a bad thing?

Glad to have been able to clear that misunderstanding up  B).

Multiplayer isn't a bad thing, its the communities attracted to them.. That's the bad thing..

Hmm i've just really used the archer and I haven't heard much new. Is it based on the area? I really don't feel like I should have to put 20 hours into multiplayer just to hear new random phrases.

The point is that you enjoy the 20 hours playing the multiplayer as many do (and much more than that) for its own sake,

it's not a target that you get to specific pieces of banter, it's enjoyable atmosphere.

If you don't enjoy the format, that's fine, some people (about a third of players) don't.

In which case are we done here, grumbling about a format that is not to your taste,

and which you have played very little, but is very enjoyable to many other people?

Both BG1&2 and NWN had MP, and I remember MP played a big part in NWN's lifespan, so BioWare did make good SP games with solid MP experience long before EA took over.

The problem of DAI mp is that it doesn't work for lots of players (including myself) even after 4 patches, so yeah sometimes I wish there were no DAMP but that's mainly because of the rampant bugs in it.

And yes, even if there were no MP in DAI, I doubt EA would give the resources to SP team.

Somehow need to express that I think this entire debate is incredibly hostile, unproductive and somewhat insulting.

I love all Dragon Age games and care about the lore with maxed-out geekness, but I enjoyed both the ME multiplayer as much as I enjoy the DA multiplayer right now. All the DLC and all the add-ons were free, but even without that, clearly BW is passionate about those modes, and it was definitely NOT "tacked on". Especially the MEMP showed how they got better and more creative which each add on they released, some mechanics besting the SP even.

Playing in those universes with my friends is something that near-perfected what I already loved, and the countless hours I've had fun with them so far, speak for themselves. I met people playing MEMP with whom I have become close (internet)friends by now, and am playing DAMP with. So hell yeah, I'm subjective about it. But at least I'm aware of it.

Saying that amount of money X poured into feature Y could go just as well into equal amounts of Megabytes of feature Z, is such an uninformed and naive calculus.  since it has been stated at various occasions that this is simply not how financials in those productions work. You want feature Y, you apply a budget. Feature Z has its own. EA is a stock company, all this money is financially virtual. Could that be marketing blah-blah? Well, then it doesn't make it in any way more credible than just applying Occam's Razor to something you have zero insight into.

If you don't like it, leave it, but don't claim to be objective when you're really just mad. I leave the curtain-lovers alone, and heck if I needed 30 different ones in my Keep.

Of course - you are all obviously wrong and just won't accept it.

On a a more serious note, there is nothing inherently wrong with multiplayer modes... It's just that recently a lot of games have been released with cheap tacked on multiplayer, and it's easy to see why it appeals to executives: creating levels, writing dialogue and animating stuff is all expensive, and for that work the player will only do that quest once whereas horde mode multiplayer will have players replay a much smaller (I.e. Cheaper) zone over and over again for hundreds of hours... As long as you make use our trick of psychological tricks to keep people repeating the same tasks.

And this is where we see the fundamentals diffence between BG MP mode mentioned earlier (which you play because it's fun to play with friends) and da MP (which you play because you need money to buy boxes which may contain the item you want). You have become a lab rat pulling levers in a box because you get some foot pellets every time you do so. Instead of actually fun games, we get psychological trickery.

Of course, we each have different tolerances to being manipulated in this way so you may be fine with it whilst I would just bin the game (I already wasted $50 in it, and farming credits to buy a Spectre gear crate to hopefully get a widow for ages won't get me that money back)

I'm done arguing about this when you are in fact being hostile. You don't know me and therefore have no concept of what I do or don't know. Plus I have no clue what you mean by "curtain-lover".

What I do see is a game franchise that traditionally had no multiplayer. EA is known for forcing gaming elements on it's developers for the sake of money which has in turn hurt several games. I play the MP for the first time and see that it's not much more than re used assents from the main game, but it (IN MY OPNION) doesn't seem very thought out. You can take that as it is, but when you attack me for my opinions I find it very hypocritical, since this is in fact your opinion that it's a good MP.

We are both free to our opinions here and if you don't like the fact that i've criticized an element of a game beloved by you; tough cookies. It doesn't mean I have to back down on my opinion though.

Overall:

1. I've played this MP mode for atleast over 10 hours or so and it got boring pretty fast for me. Why you may ask? Whenever I played maps it was always in the palace most of the time, I saw a few versions of the same map and I saw various types of character classes. I've saved up gold from victories and bought several large chests and out of all these chests I came across one legendary item and one that if forged would allow me to unlock a new character. However, from my interactions with other player via chat, it appears as if it's horribly random and could take hours if not days to find what you might need.

2. Now if I spend said days and countless hours to acquire all of these resources at random; will it allow me to access to even more areas to play with in the MP? From what i've seen it's a resounding no. So my opinion is that i've gone about as far as i'd probably get with it enjoyment wise.

3. I'm told there is a rich amount of information, from the photo presented it appears as if some information is given as a back story of sorts for these characters. However, I didn't really notice these at all which might be my fault or that it wasn't presented well. Could be either, remember (THIS IS AGAIN MY OPINION). For a bulk of those hours, I heard on repeat, "This is the most challenged i've ever been" (which is funny since we hadn't even encountered an enemy yet) or "Hey when we finish here let's go get a drink, that's what friends do right?" These started coming every few seconds to the point where I muted my tv and when I commented on this fact other players shared my sentiments. Is it my fault for potentially missing new soundbites because I muted my tv...probably yes, but when it's gotten to the point where it becomes white noise to me it's a problem.

I'm done with trying to explain this for the fans of the MP who claim it's amazing. I'm sorry I don't see it nor share your sentiment, but I shouldn't be berated for it or told that I just don't get it.

Did I step in here and start flaming the people who enjoyed the MP? No. Did I come in and say that the MP was terrible? No. At best I think it's enjoyable for a few hours and then something easily forgotten afterwards and with it's added in micro transactions I just want to keep it at arms length. Does that make me wrong? No in my opinion it doesn't. Hell I actually really enjoyed the ME3MP. I thought they did a great job with it and it only helped the experience that I knew I was also contributing to my main game as well. I just feel this was a missed opportunity for Bioware if they really wanted to craft a great MP mode. Like I said before, I would have loved to play as the Bull's Chargers going on various missions you send them on in the war map.

Let's be honest here: if DAMP didn't exist, EA would have given those resources to another project, not DAI.

lets be honest here: If EA didn't exist, Bioware would have been riding high upon the success that was KotOR and would be doing just fine without a big publisher like EA.

That's my belief as well. DA2 in my opinion was DAO turned into ME. We didn't need that. They are two separate franchises, but in my eyes it looked like EA's doing.

You were disparaging from the off in the thread's title: 'Why Multiplayer? EA's fault?'

suggesting that for the good of the single player game, the multiplayer should not be there.

Great. Some people feel that way and thank you for sharing.

You were not minded to keep your analysis that it should be done away with 'at arms length'.
I think this thread has amply explained why many others disagree.

I'm pleased that we have reached the conclusion:

  • Some people like it
  • Some people don't

Just because I feel that way doesn't mean i'm flaming you. I am not saying "Hey you are stupid for liking the multiplayer!" Or "Anyone who liked the multiplayer is stupid".   I stated my opinion that I felt it was forced on Bioware by EA who is notorious for doing things like that. Like I said in my chunk of explanations, with the current state of it, I don't think there should be a MP. However, that doesn't not then mean that i'm inferring it's bad.

It was a simple question, but what I didn't get was a simple answer. One might have simply responded "Hey Bioware wanted a MP mode". As such I would say "ok makes sense now". But without the context that Bioware actually wanted the mode, I was led to believe that it was an addition forced upon them by EA. Then it all devolved into debate over the actual multiplayer itself.

I don't hate nor mind MP in the game but the fact that MP has influenced SP with things like 8 abilties only and random loot is really annoying and terrible game design.

You do realize that in MP you have only 4 skills, right?

And random loot has been in the games since DA:O.

Why does it even matter?

It's not like adding MP has detracted from SP. That's simply not how gaming budgets work. You get extra budget for making MP, not a single budget for the entire game (SP + MP) and 'adding' MP somehow detracts from SP.

I wish they had the good kind of multiplayer in Dragon Age games, with that i mean that you could play the campaign with upto 4 players. Like BG and NWN. To bad most coop now only exists in fps games and not in rpg's.

I think you correctly identify a temporary issue (with 3 classes),

that with more people having all 12 classes running around has eased significantly.

I didn't think I'd say this, but I have learnt much from reading that post  :D

Though there was so much negative feedback about the slight connection in ME3 that I can understand why BioWare shied away from it.

If the focus on the development and fine tuning of a game isn't there, because a MP mode was created, it's generally a problem. Is that the case with DAI? According to people who have responded, no it's not a problem. However, when you have been gaming for 20+ years and have seen MP modes detract from the main game or the tacked on Story mode detracts from a great MP game; it's a problem. It can and has happened in the past. So forgive me for being weary when I see MP added to franchises that don't normally have them. Also just because one has a budget allocated for MP and one for the main game doesn't mean there won't be compromise.

The BioWare production team were asked recently at Pax South:

'why is multiplayer even in the game?'.

This is their answer [1.08.51] and I think it's an interesting one.
