This is a thread for all sorts of questions that are not directly related to the writing but might otherwise be important.

Okay, here is the question that preys on my mind:

Spoiler about the Warden's role in Dragon Age Inquisition!

Spoiler

Soo... how far West does the Warden go? I mean, are we talking here about the Arbor Wilds, The Western Approaches, the Sea of Ashes (all west of Ferelden) or are we talking about an area that's not even on the map?

Map of Thedas

Is that only for an Alistair romance? I hear that if you romance Zevran, you get War Table mission(s) from him, and it's implied the Warden is with him.

For my first game I imported US so can't verify this, but I'm running my Zevran romance import at present.

As for the scenario you presented, I think it's up to the writer; could make an intriguing fanfic idea ;)

Yes, this happens if Alistair is a) a Warden and b ) romanced. But in my world state he was king, so I only know this second-hand. I got my "contact the hero of Ferelden" mission from Leliana.

If you are interested, here is the video:

But thank you :). I'm thinking about Anderfels now.

I asked this in the Cullen thread and Cerulione rightfully suggested that we move the discussion to this group.

In case someone reads this who hasn't finished the game yet, be aware of spoilers!

I'd like to write a story about how the Warden finds a cure for the taint. The only problem I have with this is that my mind is totally empty and I can't come up with a damn cure. So, does anyone has any ideas how it could be cured? Oh, and my fanfic takes places shortly after DAI.

At this point we only know that Fiona is the only Warden who was ever cured of it and no one knows how that happened. I haven't read the Calling but based on what some other users wrote on the forum, she was wearing an amulett that the Architect gave her. But it wasn't just her amulett that cured her. There was also some weird magic going on, so a whole series of events that no one was able to recreate later on cured her.

Then we know what Bianca said about the Red Lyrium. That it's somehow infected with the blight. One of my theories is that it was originally blue lyrium, then got infected and turned red. It might also be connected to one of Thaigs (thanks to Cerulione for pointing this out).

IIRC, even in The Calling no one knows the reason of how Fiona got cured.

In-game DA:I Fiona said that even the Warden tried to re-Join her but it's simply... not working.

Oooh your fic seems interesting.

The good thing about the Primaveral Thaig idea is that (at least until more DLC comes out) it can be linked to either Dwarves or... Elfs. I know lots of people disagree about that but sometimes I think of Arlathan. They do say that Arlathan was buried under ground? At least there's a theory that Arlathan was burried underground.

Or the Black City's Arlathan. Your pick.

Or the Black City's Arlathan. Your pick.

LOL. I was going through Dragon Age Wiki entries this afternoon and I had the same idea: What if Arlathan and the Black City are the same? It's a strange coincidence that both cities were destroyed by the Tevinter Imprium. I even think that the Elven Gods and the Old Gods could be one and the same. Someone posted at Reddit a theory that there are nine elven gods but Mythal and Fen'Harel are not sealed away. So, seven gods remain. And the Maker sealed seven Old Gods away. Interesting. And then there is a connection between the taint and the Old Gods. The taint is linked with the ancient dragons, that's why the darkspawn can hear them.

But even if this is all true, I am not able to connect the dots. How does this help me to find a cure? Unless, of course, the cure is one powerful magical item - something like the Ashes of Andraste - and this item is located in the Black City. But this is unlikely. There has to be more.

IIRC There was a very good thread discussing about this a few while back, about Old Gods & Elvhen Pantheon relationship, about Black City = ARlathan Theory, even Solas = Fen'harel = Falon Din. It's very interesting :)

About curing the Calling... A magical object maybe? I personally won't use the Ashes if I were you, the Warden had touched the Ashes already remember? In DA:O? But it's up to you to change & retcon as you wish.

I'm thinking Fade-Touch black obsidian... a special one that's only exist... somewhere. (black city, idk)? The one that might cured Fiona from her Calling. At least that's an idea. Or maybe exploring the nature of darkspawn & the taint itself? Going to the deep road further than anyone ever go, finding the mystery of the rest of the First Darkspawns... The rest of the magisters entering the Golden City.

What kind of story are you writing? It's adventure? How long are you planning to make it? There's enough speculation & materials to make an entire novel out of this...

Thanks, I appreciate the help :). No, the Ashes won't cure the taint. I only mentioned them to give an example. I'm not very found of the idea of a magical object because this is too simple. That's what I tried to explain above. The Old Gods, the taint, the darkspawn (and now mabye even the Elven Gods)... they are all connected somehow. And this must be important when it comes to the taint. I think that if we would understand how the taint was really created and how it really works, the Warden could find a cure. But there is important context missing. It's driving me nuts. LOL. Also, to enter the Black City might be a bit contraproductive. The Inquisition just sealed all the breaches.

Anyway, thank you :). I will browse through the forum a bit more. Maybe I find something.

Oh, and it's supposed to be a quest story. So, yes, an adventure and it will probably be long. Not sure yet. My English language skills are not so good, so I might give up in the middle because it takes forever for me to write something in English. But right now I'm still working on an outline.

Ever heard about the DA Big Bang? You fill the participation form, write the stories & get a fanartist do a fanart for it. The dateline's extended to 20 february.

Got a question:

In your opinions is it a good idea to admit in FF.net & AO3 that the story I wrote is based on several elements from my family in RL? Seeing how toxic fandom can be I'm not sure it's a good idea... But that's the truth, my 5K fic is basically a mix of what I imagined how Cullen would be, and how similar things I personally observed IRL... I even took care to write it so that people who hadn't play Dragon Age can understand since I want to show it to Dad. Guess that finally that story's more personal than I had intended it to be.

What do you guys think? Is it a bad thing to admit that a part of it is actually based on RL?

I would mention it on the BSN but I wouldn't specify anything on the site where it's published.  Then again, I'm a little freaky about having personal details on-line, particularly in places where it's a lot more likely to be seen by random strangers than by people I'm comfortable with like I am around here.

Do you need my stuff to be on BSN or is the link to AO3 enough? It will be easy enough to cut and paste, just tell me where (one of them is 12 pages). Also one of them is rated E, but easy enough to scroll past that if it isn't your cup o' tea. For myself I'm overjoyed to be writing again after a long, long time away, but it is still a bit like pulling teeth. My bright spot is that I can only improve. :P

AO3 is quite the warm and welcoming place. I think it'd be okay.

FFN can still attract some weirdos and losers.

Personally, I hardly ever click on other user's profiles, so I wouldn't recommend links in profiles. But the link in your signature works.

I have so much to read  :o . Which is really nice  ^_^ but I will need some time because several stories are in a waiting loop now. I'm still reading legbamel's fic at the moment.

Btw, others are welcome to chime in and comment on everyone's stories :).

Well, I'd like to ask for a "critic" & feedback for my 5K fanfic then: (1.5K words oneshot): Oakmoss and Fireside Stories

That's the one fic I didn't ask anyone to beta & just got everything flow on in one go. Normally I'd do the "make the structure" things but that one's just a one-shot flow thing written in 2 hours train ride. I did cut the words from 3K to 1.5K tho... Trying to make it as short & as intense as possible since I'm not sure people would want to read a 3K long first-person narrative with zero convo/action. Not sure whether it's a good idea or not.

Any comment, feedback, or critic (positive, negative, etc) will be appreciated

I just finished your story Dane I, gottaloveme. Personally, I'm not really into stories that deal with Alistair's (or anybody else's) children and marriage but please don't take any offence in that. It's just not 'my thing', so maybe someone else could comment on this too because I'm biased.

Nevertheless, I've read it :). I must say that I have little experience with children because I don't have any. But would an eight year old child be really interested in the inscribtion of the amulett (I love you always; I only love you)? Isn't that rather an age when children say "ew... I don't want to hear about... love"? I understand that Dane misses his mother and that he wants to hear more about her. But would he really be interested in the deep love that his parents share?

I had some conflicting feelings about the ambush. On the hand, I liked the fact that there was an ambush. Yeah for the action! But on the other hand you describe Dane as a kid who vomits after the fight - and he isn't even the one who is fighting. I want to point out that in the "real world" boys could become a squire at the age of seven and already started to learn how to use weapons. Granted, I am not so familiar with their combat training but it seems to me that Dane is too pampered. But okay, I let that slide. Maybe it was the first fight Dane witnessed and he was really worried about his father. However, since Dane is one of your main characters, I wouldn't make him so weak.  I haven't read Dane II but for the future it would be nice to see some progression. Let him be a bit tougher.

That's the glory of fan fic - something for everyone. The part where Dane is playing with Alistair's amulet is his way of keeping the conversation going. He knows full well what it says.

Don't worry about Dane - maybe the story after next will be back at Skyhold where I am planning a little fisticuff action between Dane and Kieran :).

Hey, everyone :) I was wondering whether I could get your input on an idea of mine regarding Templars who are no longer able to rejoin society.

I am presently working on a new chapter for my DA 2 story, and am trying to describe Cullen's gradual transition in his opinions regarding mages and the Templar Order. I thought to introduce the concept of a sanatorium for Templars who have served faithfully, but are unable to do so any longer due to their unstable mental state. Cullen would volunteer there, and his experience with the patients would influence his perspective on the use of lyrium.

Despite nothing of the sort being mentioned in the DA universe, do you think the concept of a sanatorium might fit?

There is one, at least in Ferelden. It's Greenfell Chantry or Greendale or something like that. If you had played Witch Hunt, it was mentionned that Gregoir sent Cullen there for a time until he can "level his head up" or something like that.

The thing is, Witch Hunt is supposed to happen 2 years after DA:O ending right? Well, ain't Cullen already in Kirkwall?

But I guess you can always make up, maybe things like a month or two just after Broken Circle?

I would think that the Chantry might look after the Templars who are no longer functional as such. A monastery type situation; taking on duties as lay brothers/sisters, mentoring baby Templars, farming, study, teach. Where would your idea of chantry care take you? Dumping them or caring for them?

@ Ceru - Thanks for the suggestion :) I haven't played Witch Hunt, so I wasn't aware of that :) This'll come in handy.

The idea is to take care of them, make sure they do not hurt themselves or others. Cullen would be volunteering at such a place, much like some people volunteer at nursing homes where they keep the elderly company and entertain them for an hour or two, just to lift their spirits.

I appreciate the suggestion :)

It's a chantry at Greenfell but we don't really know if it's a sanatorium. Cullen was sent there to "level out" but it could still be a "normal" chantry where he could fulfill templar duties without being surrounded by mages.

I agree. In Dragon Age Origins there was a Templar in Denerim who looked after an older, confused Templar. The lyrium got the better of him. The younger Templar explained that this is how it works: The younger Templars take care of the older ones because sooner or later they would all become delusional due to the lyrium.

They show us a befuddled Templar standing guard outside the Chantry in Denerim.  Greenfel appears to be an out-of-the way place where Cullen can recover his equilibrium and not be confronted on a daily basis with mages that terrify him and that he thinks he needs to kill to protect people.

Dur, I just read the last paragraph of the post above mine.  Suffice it to say I got the impression that they farm out lyrium-addled Templars to backwater Chantries and other quiet places where they can stagger through the last of their days without being stripped of their knighthood.  Considering how many of them there must be it's a good thing they've tried to spread Andraste's word to all four corners of Thedas!
