Hi,

Old time, good time : I am playing the game and I have the feeling to replay the first Baldur's Gate game. And it's a good feeling, taking my time to explore, to visit, to discuss, to find missions etc...

Nostalgy, nostalgy...

Whatever, just a thread to express this feeling. I love the game for the moment. 6 hours of game and I explore, again and again.

That's all...

See you :)

What a surprising (and I guess pleasant) opinion.

I'll see your nostalgia and raise. I'm currently replaying X-COM: UFO Defense.

Agreed. DAI manages to combine BG exploration with modern Bioware dialogue to make a really fun game.

There are a bunch of modded campaigns with surprisingly good quality. I'm currently playing one called Great Hunt. You should check it out.

I've recently started playing Arcanum Of Steamworks & Magick Obscura, though not for nostalgia purposes, since this is my first time playing it.

I want to replay Baldur's Gate 2 in the enhanced version, and since I didn't get very far at all with BG before skipping to the next game, I want to get the enhanced version of that too. Unfortunately, I'll probably just end up romancing Aerie again, as a crusader, so it's hard to get myself to play it (plus I would need to buy the enhanced version). That's also why I haven't played Fallout: New Vegas a 2nd time. I'd end up either playing the same character, or playing a different one, wishing I could play the same Courier I did before.

Chances are, I won't play it a 2nd time either, because I don't think I could get past playing my b!tchy elven supermodel. Even with the mod that makes the screen wider.

I think I just might. Thanks.

Ah BG...so many fond memories. Then I boot it up and get reminded what the start is like with having Imoen firing arrows at a single gibbering while I run around in circles because my mage has used their one spell for the day and it didn't even kill it. Fun times.

Ah but the pay off once your mage gets high level though to be honest the game I filled with things that will kill your character at low levels like the ogre in area two. Great games though I go back and play both Baldur's gate games and Icewind Dale time. Bought the Enhanced versions and if you think a low level mage is hard try playing a monk or sword saint from Baldur's gate though throne of Bhaal.

I actually felt the same way my first time through Inquisition, OP. Nice to know I wasn't the only one. :)

Oh I know, I actually played through the BG series a couple of months ago and have played it many times. I just fine how pitiful you are at the start and the cheesiness of how I had to play before I picked up the others amusing (and frustrating but mostly amusing).

I just killed Irenicus this afternoon! So satisfying, even though I've done it many times before. Still far and away my favourite BioWare villain. (Although a certain person in Jade Empire gives him a run for his money ...)

Unfortunately, I'm not as fond of Throne of Bhaal, although the Wheels of Prophecy mod at least makes it tolerable. (I hear Ascension is great, too, but there is no way I am ever installing that. I play BG on normal for a reason.) Watcher's Keep is still great, though. I think I might clear it before I deal with any of the Five this time around.

What a time to be out of likes.  I love this thread.  Likes to everyone

BG was the reason I fell in love with cRPG's and I still have more hours in it than any other RPG.  I do love the current Bioware dialog and companions and I think they are a vast step up from the original implementation, but for sheer difficulty and sense of adventure, BG set a benchmark.  DA:I goes back to those roots in a big way and I love it.  I can't wait to see what they do next, now that they have a better handle on their new engine.

LOL, I posted yesterday that DAI appears to be a good new start in much the same way BG1 was.

It's not 1998 any more. We've gotten used to doing things differently. I compared DAI as a good new start with BG1 as I experienced it in 1998. I can still play the old games, but it does feel awkward at times.

The first Baldur's Gate was ****** awful. Maybe this is because I'm too young and didn't catch it the first time around but I found it dull as dirt. But never underestimate the Power of Nostalgia yoh. That Star Wars game was bad too. The second one was better but Obsidian made that. And don't even get me started on Jade Empire.

I'm with the TP. I kind of have that nostalgia for some Baldur's Gate and Baldur's Gate 2 sequel. Too bad the market now is about catering to the "press a button and something awesome has to happen" crowd. The magic to Baldur's Gate to me was foremost the story, that fantasy settings!, the music, the tactical combat with rule-based depth. I remember i spent days just re-rolling the stats when creating a new character :P. I'd still listen to Baldur's Gate 2 soundtrack on my iPhone/Android devices when i'm working.

It's not just nostalgia. Old games are better because, once upon a time, shiny graphics couldn't be used to disguise low quality, so developers had to put more effort into story and gameplay.

I feel like in the case of BioWare's older games, most of that effort went into story =P

I've still enjoyed them all so far but the combat is really clunky and awkward a lot of the times, especially in KotoR.

So tell me a story about the brilliant storytelling in Baldur's Gate or Jade Empire.
