It was totally based off of being lumped in with their musical contemporaries, the barking thing in that one song, and looking somewhat whiteboy tribal?
I can't say they've ever looked tribal to me. Then I've seen so many different things labelled as tribal, I don't even know.
Face piercings and stretched ears piercings can do it for those who generalize at first glance
That explains it. Well, I'm not an idiot, so I don't do that. It makes sense now. I don't think any of them have stretched ears though. I know David Draiman has his spider bite chin piercings, but I think he took those out. He hasn't worn them in a while (if the music video releases are anything to go by).
One of my favorite songs off of SYL's The New Black album. This album also had the best drum sound out of all their records in my opinion. Gene Hoglan is truly the atomic clock.
This is a couple of years old but this article is great because it makes sense. Most metal fans already know that listening to metal makes people feel better and most metalheads that I know or have met are always the most chill and positive people. Just goes to show that people that listen to this kind of music aren't "angry" or "want to kill people"
I can't help but really respect bands who do things like this purely out of choice rather than necessity, producing and releasing an album independently from any labels and not even asking a certain minimum for it. They're not exactly multi-millionaires to whom money isn't an issue, either. It's refreshing to see people who are truly passionate about their art. I just feel bad I can't pay more right now than what I did, because this is the type of thing that I really want to support.
Since I have yet to give the album a good listen, here's some of their earlier work:
