So, why I like Metal.

Part of it was growing up games fueled by said music style. DOOM's soundtrack is almost entirely thrash songs retooled into MIDI files. Doom's E3M1 is based off the riff from Pantera Being Badass. Full Throttle had a bit of metal in it, too. Gone Jackal's Legacy seemed inspired by Motorhead's speedy stuff.

That, and I've always liked High-Energy music. Even Super-Happy Girly Stuff like Para Para/Eurobeat. Having said that, you really do need to pick-and-choose with metal bands. That goes for most genres anyway, but the amount of noisy ones can be off-putting. Outside of special cases like King Diamond or maybe 3 Inches of Blood, I've never been into Scream-O music. Falsetto can work, and King's one of the few artists to make it sound natural instead of the vocalist just trying to act demonic or something. Judas Priest is also a great example. Halford has 4 Octave Ranges. That's kind of a lot. Freddy Mercury's the only other one I know who can pull that off. The Painkiller isn't exactly a magnum opus, but you have to admit Robert pulled it off very well.

Judas Priest. You have to respect a band that can handle that many variations of metal and still retain their high bar of quality. Can't believe I'm making the analogy, but you could make a comparison to The Beatles in how they handled classic Boy Band, Psychadelic, Southern Rock, etc.

Mathias Blad is a bit unique when it comes to metal singers. Having trained as a musical stage actor he is not singing metal like most other singer do. Some say that he's the weakest part in Falconer, but without him they would lose what makes them special to me.

there are so many different bands and genres that it's almost impossible to listen to them all  seen a lot of cool stuff in this thread so far. keep it coming!  :)

time for some more obscure/unclassifiable stuff or rather difficult to classify. Animals As Leaders is instrumental only but their music is really technical, atmospheric and just plain strange. it's a very interesting listen and a treat to the ears especially if you're a musician (like me!)

another instrumental band Russian Circles. they're not as technical but i like their music too.

Have we covered the genre symphonic/operatic metal yet? Think this band worth mentioning.
