I haven't seen anything from this 2 bands yet:
HYPOCRISY
Used to be my fav during my melodeath phase. Those times are now gone, but the quality appreciation remains.

i remember hearing Mastodon for the first time on Relapse Records sampler disc i got at some shitty venue my first band played at 12 or 13 years ago. this was the song on the disc:
the guitars were crushing, the drums were insane, and the production was nice and dirty. ever since then i continued to follow them. i like the newer stuff they've been doing just because it's totally different. however, i think i will always like their older music better because of the more brutal nature of it at the time.
this one was off one of their early demos before they were signed to Relapse. practically grindcore.

Meshuggah: a one of a kind band in my opinion. they are unique and their musicianship is very precise. what some people may not know is that Meshuggah was created by the reapers billions of years ago to indoctrinate metal heads. it's true i tell you!!! anyways, this song just ****** rules.
here's another favorite off their Catch 33 album
the part at 2:51 is eerie but i love it. guess you can call it a guitar solo. the last 5 or 6 minutes of weird ambience sort of sounds like the music on the collector ship in ME2. just saying.
gives me chills.

Big fan of both Mastodon and Meshuggah. My one problem with Mastodon is that I keep comparing every album they've released since to Crack The Skye, and they inevitably all fall short.

I watched the whole Storytime, Showtime concert on Youtube with Floor Jansen. Tarja, while I liked her unique voice, didn't seem to get along with the band well. Floor looks like she looooooooves being part of the band. But I have to say, I like how the group evolved over time.

Somebody asked for symphonic metal? Here, take these :
I think we are still missing some other subgenre, like folk metal. Anybody? ![]()

imo the first Sirenia-albums are rather gothic metal than symphonic metal.

i dont think this is "real" folk metal, but it should come closer to it than anything else i´m listening to:

Here's some folk/pagan metal with just a bit of black metal thrown in the mix:
It's just a shame that the lyrics don't really translate well to English from what I've gleaned at some translations available. There's a ton of nuance and wordplay that gets lost in translation. I'm fortunately a native speaker, but most people obviously won't be.

Thanks alot, they are very good. I know very few (good) folk bands, and the main problem is that many of them sing in their native language.
I can only add a little more:
I love the vocals:
This one is quite unique because of the language and female vocalist:
And found a translation to English:

Amorphis and Opeth have some elements of folk music.
