Hey All

Just starting my first playthrough on PS4, suggestions welcome. I love the series myself, so definitely not a hater. Game seems fantastic, though the control changes from origins and DA2 (console wise) are taking a little getting used to.

Keep was updated first....

Thank you in advance.

Ps, Haters not welcome thanks again

Do not try to play the game by completing one area at a time:

I have a noob question (again on PS4)

X button is now jump. I always loved being able to randomly click interact on a character and have them make no random comment.

Are companion comments not just random? I can't interact instead of jumping at times?

Don't play. It is the only advice, worst game ever. If you love the series don't play Inquisition. Inquisition is for haters, if you hate DAO and DA2, play Inquisition.

You can't interact with your companions while at field (except for predetermined situations), you can only interact with them at the home base (Haven for now, Skyhold later on). They do still have party banter.

Rotate different party members because the glorious banter comes from the interaction.

If you stick to a 'preferred party' they'll eventually run out of stuff to say...

Travel to different areas through your wartable. I believe there is still a bug that limits companion banter while adventuring, but traveling through the wartable is a workaround for the time being.

And yes, leave the Hinterlands.

The level of enemies at the rifts are a good indication of the level you should be in that area. All regions have lower levels and higher levels.

In general, don't try to be a completionist. Not just in terms of areas and quests, but in things like getting everyone the best possible crafted equipment. The game isn't set up to reward that. You can do it, but it isn't fun.

Now that is simply a matter of opinion! AlanC9, I am offended by this comment. I require an apology for all of us completionists and those who like overpowered parties and love to craft!

Take the Iron Bull when you go Dragon Hunting.

I found the crafting system was quite fun, but if it's not your bag, there are some terrific pieces you can buy, for all classes.

One major suggestion I can give that can change your entire outlook of the game is to realize that DAI is different than its predecessors in that you play both a PC and develop an Inquisition rather than just do random stuff with a character.

Treat the Inquisition as its own entity. Everything you do is reflected on the Inquisition so approach every quest with that mindset.

Every quest, no matter how seemingly trivial, will incrementally make you and your Inquisition stronger and grow in power and influence figuratively and literally.

Many of those quests tie the zone together and end up rewarding you and your Inquisition unexpectedly with loot, agents, lore, etc..

Use the war table mechanic and read the content carefully, and don't select an approach based on which advisor is currently available but rather on which approach you feel is best.

Basically, choose the quests, events, actions, and dialogue that not only reflect your own character but the organization you want to develop.

That's all I can say without venturing into spoilers.

The jump from the combat system from DAO to DA2 was jarring. However, the DAI system is more a mesh of the two.

Don't stay in the hinterlands. Help Mother Giselle and Horse master Dennet and then leave. You sare sent back several times for companion side quests and when you travel to redcliff.

I definitely agree that this game is a mesh of the first two, control wise - it's taking a little getting used to, but just a little. Glad to see that this console version finally has the tactical view found in the PC versions, previously

I do like how this seems to connect to the end of DA2 with Varric and Cassandra.....

It's going to have a more console feel this time around. If you're on the PS4, this is going to feel like a step forward to the franchise. I play and absolutely prefer PCs, but that isn't relative to you.

Thanks for the new comments. As for the Console vibe this time - DA2 felt very much that way. This one definitely has some upgrades that I am digging

I missed being able to upgrade my companion's outfits in DA2, so will be curious how this game handles it.

Personally, from what I've seen, i don't get any hate for the game!

Companion weapons and armor can be upgraded the same as yours, so definitely keep an eye out for schematics.

Also note that there are crafting materials that remove class restrictions from armor, so if you want to put heavy armor on your mage, it is possible.

Also, leave the beaten path.  Not every neat place or item has a quest that sends you to it.  Jump up cliff faces, check for hidden caves, ect.  I'm still finding cool stuff I haven't seen before and I'm on my third playthrough.  My first and second playthroughs were 170 and 171 hours respectively and were mostly completionist (missed a few things (one song, some seeds, a few mosaic pieces).  And to reiterate previous advice, don't complete any area in one go.  Move around between them - you can go back to all of the major areas.

FInally, know when to run away (particularly at low levels).

Excellent advice on running away....lol

And heavy armor on a mage is a cool idea - glad I started this thread. Very invaluable information here. Night all and thanks again. May ask a couple questions tomorrow, but for the most part, the game is pretty intuitive
