FInally, know when to run away (particularly at low levels).

"You've got to know when to hold 'em
Know when to fold 'em
Know when to walk away
And know when to run
"
-Kenny Rogers, The Gambler

Some areas have a wide range of enemy levels, so do check enemy levels (and whether there are any bosses/elites) at the start of a fight by using the tactical cam and highlighting the enemies.

So far, my only complaint is the auto leveling of your points into Strength and cunning, etc. That said, my only concern with it is if the game is too easy, too hard. I am playing on Normal mode, as I have with the other two. And early on, it doesn't seem super easy. My mage feels pretty depowered compared to the early stages of DA2........but again, this is just early impressions/thoughts

What I am blown away by: detailed settings are such an improvement over the last game, not even funny

Of course on 360 DA2 was a 6.1 gb file; PS4 is 46 gb....! DAMN!!!!!!!

Even so, you have quite a lot of control over your attributes. First, weapons and armors and their upgrades can significantly boost the attributes you want. Second, passive abilities boost attributes as well.

In general, the game isn't overly difficult, some areas and enemies do pose more challenges, though.

I am glad to see we still choose a nice variety of abilities, which is great.

And at least with the first two games, Normal is pretty management, until the end, and then  suddenly there is a spike in difficulty. If the game remains fair, I may try Hard on a subsequent playthrough

Thank you

Ps Notice there are a ton of novels in this universe, may check them out - seems cool

Upon reaching Skyhold, do your specialisation quest. Companions have the same ones as the Inquisitor, so you know what spec does what.

Some dialog or companion quests are gated behind approval. Talk to your Inner Circle often.

Advisors are not just random NPCs. There are part of the inner circle of your Inquisition. They have their own quests, dialog and 2 of them are even romanceable.

Mages don't have acces to common healing spells anymore.(Vivienne and a Knight Enchanter Inquisitor have one hell of a massheal though)

Use your warriors guard (metal bar on your healthbar) and a mages barrier (blue thing on the healthbar) to protect yourself.

There are also evade spells to make sure that enemies hit you. (Fadestep, Block and Slash, Evade, etc.)

There are 9 companions. You might miss 1 or 2 in  a certain city. Look for the arrow and the messenger! (Or reload to an older save .... *sigh* Happened to me.)

There will be mobs who are simply to strong for you. Enemies don't level up with you. Come back later when you are stronger,

Hunt dragons and bring Iron Bull with you.

Talk to Iron Bull after killing a dragon.

The majority of areas only become available once you reach Skyhold.

One game feature that deserves a mention in this thread are the focus abilities. The inquisitor will get two of these while companions get one. You will get the first focus ability shortly before reaching Skyhold. These are high-powered abilities best reserved for boss fights as they take a while to recharge. For this reason they are by default disabled in the tactics.

If you prefer RP over combat, select Inq Perks that boost Codex XP for the added dialogue choices for that character. Not required, but also makes up for any other XP lost in the game. But if you prefer Kill XP, take that Perk bonus early to get more use from it, as it can see little use if your PC becomes overpowered in areas with lesser encounters.

Don't do this! lol

That's probably the single most useless perk you can get. Most enemies grant little to no xp. And 5% gain of little to nothing is no gain. The only time it will give any significant boost is when killing dragons.

Granted, over the course of the entire game this might end giving you a little gain, but I've never taken it and always finished above level 20, which is more than enough to beat anything in the game with relative ease.

Thanks everyone. Glad to see there are a lot of fans here......I love the game. I like how there are a lot of new stuff to do that was not found in origins or DA2, like finding a darn bridge with colums on it,......lol but good stuff. I've read over everything and its helping

Update: about 8 hours in. Everything plays great, combat-wise. The only thing I am taking getting used to: the map - it reads like an actual map, but wish it would change when inside buildings or the like. Trying to find a bridge with the pillars mission is a tad cumbersome, when going off the map alone

The more I use it in the game, the easier it does become, but still.....I loved the way Origins handles the map - both world and local versions.

Side note: the sheer amt of stuff to see and do is crazy in DA: I

Bridge with pillars? You mean the treasure map quest? Those are annoying, and there are several more of those.

Yeah, on the one hand, i dig how there isn't a lot of hand holding. On the other, there is no hand holding. I apparently am terrible at finding treasures....!

Minor gripe for sure

Don't forget the grinding for rare mats. Gotta love that.

I've not found that necessary. I just pick resources up when I see them and I'm never short.

I did make the mistake of not bothering to collect some lower tier herbs after a certain point, only to realise I needed them later for things. But those are the only trips I've made specifically to harvest stuff.

Do not try to play the game by completing one area at a time:
http://kotaku.com/ps...ands-1661855879

I have made this "mistake" with my first playthough, and while I for one wasn't bored by the hinterlands and exploring every nook and cranny of it. I will say though that the sentiment of not being an uber completionist will save you a lot of time in the game, there is way more content available than what is required to keep on level with the main story. In all honesty if you buckle down and decide to complete a few areas it means that you can actually safely ignore other areas entirely and never find yourself underleveled. It's crazy.

And in fact with leveling set up like it is leveling isn't that rewarding after a certain point. You're limited to 8 ability slots so there will come a point when you inevitably spend ability points on abilities you can't fit on your bar and will never use. On that same note don't underestimate the passive abilities! Some can be real life savers and will do a lot more for your than having fireball#2 taking up space on your hotbar.

One final thing I can think of is take advantage of the respec amulets you can buy near the blacksmith. They're relatively cheap and it's well worth it to shake up your build and try new things (especially as a mage).

Yeah, definitely taking the 'don't complete everything in one area' before moving on. Gonna do an area until I want to, regardless of how many side missions are left, or items to find

Ten plus hours in and damn, great game. Still doing a lot of the smaller side mission stuff, though just entered Val Royeaux via the War Table area......love how varied locations are.

Ok, so if any Bioware employee were to take to heart my one criticism, its the map. Its very nice looking, but wish it labeled areas more clearly, like this this one:

http://www.dragonage.com/en_US/explore

While the above map is less pretty, artistically, its way more function (ie clear to see where different areas are, and how they are separated). Since I do have access to this map via the computer, its a bit of a non issue, but the in game world map is a little too vague for its own good.

A fun little detail: the bard in the tavern at Val Royeaux sings the same songs as the one in Haven/Skyhold tavern - but in French.

And definitely read the books - they are fantastic for lore and good reads on their own.  "Asunder" and "The Masked Empire" are most relevant to Inquisition.  The comics (the ones Gaider wrote) are pretty good if you are looking for more insight into the lore as well.

Thanks for the continued responses, everyone. Its been an Amazing help

Couple questions:

1) I notice that the game has the text 'X slightly approves' yet I see no Friend/Rival option in the character screens - is this even relevant to this game? Or just influences some dialogue? Just wondering how much/little I need to worry about making my squad mates happy, etc?

2) Do all the collection missions, such as find all wine bottles result in a bonus cave or some such, like the ocularium ones when you find all in a region?

Thanks

1 - Approval is hidden in DAI, so one does not know fully where one stands. However, it is said that when stoong disapproval accumulates, that Follower may leave the Inquisition for good.

2 - Hidden bottles has a reward, but was as weak as some of the War Table rewards. But Astra-scopes are worth investigation; have some great rewards, IMO.

Companion approval has quite a bit of effect to your proceedings - unlike in DAO/DA2, companion approval isn't shown anywhere.

Most collection missions have little to no effect on your efforts.
