I am forcing my way through DA:2 in order to have a save for DA:I, and all it is doing is reminding me how abysmally terrible DA:2s combat is in every way.

There is a reason why I only played it once whereas I played Origins several times.

But anyway, is the combat in :I the same as :0 or the garbled broken mess it is in :2, if it is not exactly like either which is it closest to?

(I am wondering if it is worth playing through :2 basically.  That game is so damn terrible combat wise.)

I could get this from reviews, but I am doing my damndest to avoid spoilers, and hell I even got something of a spoiler from this :D  "The elder one" is what I am fighting apparently in :I.  Which is a shame.

It's different from 2 in the sense that you won't have mobs of enemies appearing out of nowhere around you, not very often at least. If you want more you'll have to be more specific on what you don't like about 2.

Well basically every single part of it is bad, so I dont even know where specifically to begin...

Heres an attempt anyway.

Are the enemies still randomly immune to specific damage types for no reason?

Are there still enemies with infinite access to healing potions who take thousands of casts of your most powerful combat skills?

Are there still enemies who hit your guys with instant kills from accross the map?

Are there still enemies which freeze your guys in place in order to make it so you cant avoid instant kills? Not using skills, but simply causing your movement to stop for no reason.

Are tanks actually a thing which exists in :I?

Do your crowd control skills actually work in :I? (Ie taunt, stuns and such)

Are the spell and skill comboes actually impactful like they are in : O or just "oh hey you do extra damage now because blrghtgrt"?

Does how you build your characters actually have any effect on thier performance?

Does every fight devolve into one of your characters running from the horde of enemies like a goddamn benny hill sketch peppering them with damage skills whenever possible and just hoping against hope that they dont get frozen by one of the instakill attacks?

Do your characters and the enemies bark stupid **** constantly?

Does any minor change in elevation break the combat?

Do your melee guys do AOE damage for no reason at all meaning you cant have more than 1 melee guy like in :2?

Do your followers ever get above 60% to hit, like in : O, or are they never capable of applying damage like in :2?

Do your followers actually obey things such as "dont move" or thier tactic settings?

Can you actually equip your followers or are they essentially naked like they are in :2?

Can you make your followers perform roles in combat, like in : O, or are you stuck with them potentially always being useless (like Merril/Tattooed ****** melee guy)?

Does every combat start with your PC saying stupid bollocks and then a thousand enemies stream out of every crevice in the map?

In a lore where teleportation is not a thing does every single mage you fight teleport everywhere like in :2?

Is your gear as fugly as it is in 2? (Not really combat related, but kind of is...)

Probably more, but just thinking about DA:2 makes me want to drink myself unconscious.

I'll do my best to answer your points.
1 none that I can recall
2 no enemy that I have fought can heal itself
3 it depends on the difficulty, but you usually won't get killed before you have a chance to fight back.
4 no paralysis that I know of.
5 yes, tanks are good, even essential, in Inquisition.
6 yes
7 it depends on the combo
8 yes
9 no
10 I don't think so. It depends on your definition of "stupid".
11 not that I have noticed
12 I believe 2h warriors still do friendly fire, but you don't have to have friendly fire on if you don't want to.
13 I believe they do, but I am not sure about this question,
14 it depends. Hold position is more of an area and less of a point.
15 you can equip your characters with weapons and armor you find, so long as they meet the requirements.
16 you can spec characters talents however you like.
17 no
18 mages didn't really teleport, they used a haste spell. The animation is made more explicit in DAI.
19 in my opinion, no. Also, the addition of crafting lets you replicate some gear that you find if you have the schematics for it.

There is no more % chance to hit or miss in Inquisition. Whether an attack hits or not is determined completely by hitboxes ala Demon's Souls. The exception is one rogue skill which does give you a 5% chance to completely avoid damage but that's it. You can manually dodge hits in Inquisition, both ranged and melee, very consistently if you know what you are doing.

Tanks are very OP in Inquisition. Properly built and directed a sword & shield tank is nigh invincible against most enemies.

Combos have varying effects in addition to doing extra damage, which AFAIK all of them do. One combo puts an enemy to sleep, others make them run around like chickens with their heads cut off, another one weakens them (damage output reduced). Basically all the CCCs apply crowd control in one way or another.

Your build in terms of skill point allocation matters a ton in Inquisition. Some abilities are extremely useful while others are very mediocre, situational, or just plain bugged and worthless.

The gear mostly looks good in Inquisition. Some of the headgear is still dumb looking but that is actually something the series as a whole is kind of known for. Even in Origins the mage headgear was notoriously dumb looking. And some helmets in this game (warden helmet, soldier helmet, various cowls, etc.) are fine.

Enemies almost never charge you in huge waves from Maker knows where in this game. You will almost always see the enemies and where they are well before they aggro to you.

Are the enemies still randomly immune to specific damage types for no reason? Well some are immune, like rage demons immune to fire, dragons immune to the type of damage they do, etc... but not w/o reason I don't think.

Are there still enemies with infinite access to healing potions who take thousands of casts of your most powerful combat skills? Not because of potions, a few bosses have incredible starting HP, but they can't heal the damage you do.

Are there still enemies who hit your guys with instant kills from accross the map? No, a dragon may form the air if you have Berserk on your gear but, otherwise no.

Are there still enemies which freeze your guys in place in order to make it so you cant avoid instant kills? Not using skills, but simply causing your movement to stop for no reason. No, they can stun and freeze you here and there but,m they don't inta kill you unless you use berserk on gear, then it may be possible.

Are tanks actually a thing which exists in :I? Yes, though the AI is not that great with them there are two good tanks besides the player character.

Do your crowd control skills actually work in :I? (Ie taunt, stuns and such) Yes, not on huge numbers but on 3-4 enemies, they work fine.

Are the spell and skill comboes actually impactful like they are in : O or just "oh hey you do extra damage now because blrghtgrt"? Yes combos work and, deal damage, sometimes even killing the foe.

Does how you build your characters actually have any effect on thier performance? You don't assign attributes, that's automatic now but, what skills you give them does make a difference.

Does every fight devolve into one of your characters running from the horde of enemies like a goddamn benny hill sketch peppering them with damage skills whenever possible and just hoping against hope that they dont get frozen by one of the instakill attacks? No, they don't run from the fight unless you do.

Do your characters and the enemies bark stupid **** constantly? Sometimes, but not as often as in DA2.

Does any minor change in elevation break the combat? No, infact archer get bonus damage for firing from elevation.

Do your melee guys do AOE damage for no reason at all meaning you cant have more than 1 melee guy like in :2? No, you can have all mellee

Do your followers ever get above 60% to hit, like in : O, or are they never capable of applying damage like in :2? They can apply good damage.

Do your followers actually obey things such as "dont move" or thier tactic settings? Not an option, all you can say is how much mana/stamina they use, when they use healing pots and, what abilities they cannot use.

Can you actually equip your followers or are they essentially naked like they are in :2? You equip them head to toe.

Can you make your followers perform roles in combat, like in : O, or are you stuck with them potentially always being useless (like Merril/Tattooed ****** melee guy)? They can follow or defend any other character you choose.

Does every combat start with your PC saying stupid bollocks and then a thousand enemies stream out of every crevice in the map? No.

In a lore where teleportation is not a thing does every single mage you fight teleport everywhere like in :2? No, only teleporting is stealth rogues (which is really sneaking up on you, not teleporting)

Is your gear as fugly as it is in 2? (Not really combat related, but kind of is...) Look at pics, there are only a few styles for each class. Crafting can change the colors. Ugly is a matter of personal opinion.

A few things:

I don't think there is really a lore reason why say, spiders are immune to electric damage. There are pretty random resistances and weaknesses BUT, the difference from 2 is that there are also enemies which don't resist anything and when an enemy does resist a certain element the game always clearly tells you so you know what to use and what to avoid.

The CC in this game actually can affect very large numbers of enemies depending on which skills you're using. High tier abilities like static cage or upgraded lightning bolt can push half a dozen enemies around no problem, the limitation is that they all have to be grouped up closely enough to get hit. Another example is charging bull which can knock down as many enemies as you can hit, they just have to be lined up in the right trajectory for it.

The main CC enemies will hit you with is knockdown which certain enemies can apply very consistently/repeatedly (terrors, shield enemies, giants, etc.), making it frustrating to fight if you don't know how to deal with it. However in every case there are tactics and abilities to cope with it.

There is a hold position command for your followers and it does work. However I barely ever find myself using it.

There definitely are magic enemies that will randomly teleport around. Spellbinders can do it, despair demons can do it (they aren't actually teleporting but rather flying through the air, but the effect is the same), arcane horrors will do it. Terror demons are the worst as they not only teleport but damage and knockdown in a large AOE upon arrival.

Er, surprised no one mentioned this but you don't acually import saves into DA:I, you make your decisions through the Dragon Age Keep and import that so there's really no reason to play through DA2 unless you wanto refresh your memory.

Just a heads up, combat in DAI is more like DA2 than Origins, so if you hate DA2, you'll probably hate DAI too.

One really nice thing in DAI, though, is that nearly all enemies (except bosses) can be cc'd in some way unlike DA2 having loads of enemies that just can't be cc'd period.

Also, as someone that's played a heck of a lot of DA2, what enemies have infinite healing potions that are that tanky?

The Arishok, although that was never a problem for a properly built Rogue Hawke.

I find the combat pacing to be somewhere between the prior games; faster than DAO, but not as swift as DA2.

Possibly the greatest change is that the Player is limited to eight quick-slots during the course of the battle, though these may be switched between combats.

There are two modes of combat: Tac-Cam and Action; also a combo of both. I prefer the mix, plus a lot of Pause.

I barely played DA:I on normal or hard so my answers are based on nightmare difficulty. Played on PC by the way.

1. Some enemies have elemental resistance (like bears are resistant to frost and rage demons resistant to fire) and may take 1 damage from basic staff attacks of said element. It's not so bad like it was in DA:2 though.

2. No, they don't even use potions, but they do have a lot of Health.

3. I believe you are talking about those backstabbing rogues in DA2 or those mage AoE spells in DA2. So No, there are no instant kills like that for the most part of the game.

4. No, but some enemies can slow or knock you down for a moment.

5. Yes.

6. Yes.

7. Extra damage, but some combos add status effect, for example: NIGHTMARE = damage + fear, DISCHARGE = AoE damage + shocked.

8. Yes (this is true for all DA's though).

9. No.

10. Can't really give a good answer for you because i like the battle quotes in all DA's, especially 2.

11. No, archers can even benefit from it.

12. Yes, they can do AoE damage but friendly fire is off by default, even on nightmare.

13. I believe you are talking about % chance to hit. If so, it's not present in DA:I.

14. Not possible in the tactical settings menu, but you can command your characters to hold position. In my experience if you simply press 'H' to hold position it won't work properly. But whenever i go into tactical camera and click to move twice in the same spot, they will hold position there.

15. You can fully equip them.

16. All characters in all DA's are useful IMO. DA:I is not an exception.

17. No.

18. It's not teleportation, but that still happens in DA:I (not as often as it was in DA2 though).

19. No. There aren't many options though, but you can tint your armor.

Also there is save import into DA:I. Check out the dragon age keep.

Sorry, I have to ask. Why torture yourself when you can get any worldstate you want from Dragon Age Keep?
