Hi There!

I am about 10 hours into DAI and I am sort of enjoying the game but I am finding so many parts of the game/story I just don't get.

Guard. Where do I get that from and how do I tell if I have it or not?

What is the blue thing that gets added to my health when I go into combat.

At L4 should I have decent weapons or be reasonably strong? Seems to take a long time to level up, and I am getting the snot kicked out of me a LOT. Portal enemies are doing 600 damage I am doing 50!!

There seems to be two combat modes but I don't know what to use the second mode for and how to do it effectively.

In the map room there are two sides but I am unsure why I would do one or the other? Is it basically a choice between mages and templars?

Building armour, getting herbs and other stuff seems to be impossibly complicated and hard to keep track of. More traditional RPG's you get rune slots and they have simple buffs and you can easily see what the end result of applying one for the other would be.

Any other basic tips and tricks?

In the map room sometimes missions allow me to send agents other times I must go myself, is that normal?

Oh boy suspecting troll post here......

I suggest you find the game manual I believe it's included on the disk. If not you can google it. Look in the Codex for "Tutorials" as well.

Guard is generated by certain Warrior skills; read their descriptions for more detail. If you're not a warrior, you won't have guard at this early stage of the game unless you find armor or a weapon that grants it. Later on, you'll be able to craft armors and weapons with it yourself, assuming you find the requisite components. Look at Cassandra's health bar after she taunts an enemy with Challenge or War Cry: she should have metal-looking bars over her health bar. Guard must be dismantled first before your health starts degrading.

The blue overlay on your health bar is Barrier, which also must be dismantled before health but, unlike Guard, which doesn't degrade over time if no damage is being done to it, Barrier wears away after a while. Only mages can generate Barrier; Solas has that as a default spell, so that's probably where you're getting it.

At level 4 , you're still supposed to be weak, and you will usually craft better weapons than you get in loot. You should search these boards; there are any number of topics that can help you as a new player. Also, the Dragon Age Wiki has had a chance to get up to speed on the game, so the information there is reasonably accurate. And YouTube has plenty of gameplay videos that can help you learn the mechanics of the game.
