I purposely avoided giving this topic a spoiler title, but this is about Bethany/Carver...although mostly Bethany.

In DA2 I was really searching for my ideal team set up (1 Tank, at least 1 mage, 1 rogue (for the lock picking) and 1 other either melee or range depending on the make up of the rest).

I had Bethany set up as my go to mage with all of the nice mage gear and items. I had her points paid exactly how I wanted the, and then the game gives me a giant middle finger and tells me I don't get to use her anymore. So what do I end up having to do? I went with Anders...i'll let you contemplate that for a bit since he's not the same guy that I liked in Awakenings. For awhile DA2 for me felt like the adventures of two siblings struggling to survive in the world. However, after she departs I couldn't really fill the hole that her loss created in my party and the story itself.

I mean you lose Carver or Bethany at the start and then you lose the other? That's some serious bs in my opinion and just lazy design that forces you to compensate.

I know i'm going to get hate over this, but did this/these moments really ****** off anyone else?

i don't know what platform you are on but i know that on PC you can use command codes to add ability trees to a character. i didn't want to play with Anders so i gave merrill healing.

I don't mind these types of situations in a game, loss is an important of storytelling and that loss shouldn't be off limits to people in your inner circle.

It's not good when you have to use command codes to fix something in the first place :/

Once I lost Bethany to the Circle, I no longer had a regular mage for healing, but switched to Merrill just to deal with groups. No way was I going to let Anders in on a regular basis for that, and once Dissent was done, he was out of the group for good. I was a bit peeved about Bethany being in the Circle, but I suppose that was kind of the point. Having the DLC's left for Act 3 helped a lot though, especially Legacy. I was annoyed when I lost Malcolm's Honor though. It didn't occur to me that this would be lost if I didn't put the item back in my inventory before she departs.

Yeah, i ended up using Merrill eventually since she was my romance choice.

As long as Bethany survives Act 1, she will reappear again as a playable companion a couple of times. So she's not TOTALLY lost to you. If that's any consolation.

Yeah, the mages in the game that aren't Bethany kinda suck.  You either get a whiny abomination or an ignorant blood mage.

My solution to that was to make Hawke a spirit healer mage. :)

Its only really haste that I miss from that tree, I think Merrill's personal tree is much better. I never really use Anders as a healer its too much of a pain to keep faffing about with that stupid sustained spell that stops him using any offensive magic (magic that does damage that is not like impolite or rude magic) its easier just to keep a few Mythal's Favours (once you've got to that point in the game obviously).

Point is, it's not clever and made no sense to lose a companion like that. You are damned either way.

I was pretty gutted when the Templars took her, I'd been taking her out questing a lot so I was sad to see her go. But obviously that was the point. For the drama. If Bethany hadn't been a companion and just been your sister that stayed at home that moment wouldn't have been the same. The fact that we were able to take her on quests and hear her banters etc let us get to know her better.

I only really miss Bethany as a character not for her mage abilities. She has no personal tree (that should have been a clue I suppose) and no primal tree either. If I pick her to use for dlc late in the game I find I don't know what to do with her.

As others have said losing a party member shouldn't be off limits. Like a lot of players though, the only role replacement was someone I didn't really like too much, especially once I discovered the ending. On my last playthrough I lost 2 folks and had to figure out how to accommodate that. It wasn't so bad, and I just thought of it as one more part of the unique story.

I did miss the story of the two sibling immigrant refugees making their way in a strange city from the first act.

It does leave a hole to lose your remaining sibling, doesn't it?  I made Carver into a Grey Warden, so at least he's still alive, but given what happens in Act 2... it still sucks that he's not available for a lot of the quests.  (I haven't gotten to Act 3 yet, so can't speak to what happens at that point)  It would suck worse if I weren't playing a mage, though.  Anders... I miss Awakening!Anders, and Merrill just drives me batty with her lack of common sense.  At least Carver's replacements are tolerable.

It makes sense on some level to lose your companions, whether temporarily or permanently, but I understand your frustration, OP.
