I would assume him being a demon, but I haven't tested, so I don't know.

He is already afflicted with a cursed rune that makes him fall on your sword repeatedly...you don't need another one...

You jest, but OP does actually need to be careful about over-dpsing him.
Sometimes if he gets burst down to 1 health too quickly, he'll go invulnerable, the dragon won't appear, and you'll need to reload. I assume he's sulking because he didn't get to deliver his entire monologue.
Runes won't make a huge difference on that front, just be careful playing with things like Mark of Death, Thousand Cuts, or many stacks of Tears of the Dead. Those can do enough spike damage that he doesn't have time to throw up a barrier and run away when he's supposed to.
After the dragon lands, you can dps the dragon and Cory as fast as you please. Besides, post-dragon Cory has much more annoying attacks than his pre-dragon phases. Save your heavy damage for those fights.

I found this out the hard way when I took an all Rogue team to fight him.
Despite this, I remain a firm believer in overkill.

It's kinda hard not too with the OP schems in this game.

You really don't need any runes with him. A bigger worry is taking him down too fast and, thus preventing the end of the game. I play as mage and, with him , I use only Basic attack, even on nightmare. My team, whomever I choose does enough w/o much help form me. I just have to keep barrier rolling and zap at him when I can't cast barrier on my melee fighters.

I'm fairly certain I used Thousand Cuts on him, he died within seconds and the game just continued like normal.
