Can we please just be rid of the RPG "genre"? It's such a loose term in gaming, second only to "journalistic integrity". Doesn't tell you a damned thing about how fun a game is, if it's funny, horrifying, dramatic immersive or  violent. If DA:I were a book, or a movie, it would almost certainly be categorized as a choose your own adventure, so I don't see why we gamers don't just call such games that instead of "RPG".

Wait are you implying that the game is choice-driven?

Is that not a good thing? :o

Except in choose your own adventure books there are wildly different endings depending on what sth you tooj. In DAI the ending is basically the same, no matter what you did.

You choose your own adventure only if your choice is between a few titles... like: DAI or Witcher...

but once you commit... then you get always the same adventure with minor deviations... (well Witcher 2 has one full second act that can be tremendously different)... but in the end you choose nothing... the adventure is set in stone... you might choose to go and have more adventures by side-questing... but at its core all RPGs, adventures, shooters have always one default adventure...
maybe with one exception being skyrim... this one is like medieval side quest simulator deprived of a main quest (but I loved that one too).

And applying the the term non linear stories and branching narratives also feels like too much...

It is more like

linear stories
Branching endings
with no (or very little) consequences or effects on anything that comes later.

I love BW-games and rpgs in general...  dont get me wrong... but there are some very over the top descriptions to this genre, that fail to properly describe it...

I'm starting to think that 'what is RPG' in gaming is sort of like 'what is art' in art.

(hint,  nobody touching the 'what is art' not even with ten foot pole)

CYOA games are vastly different to DA:I. Seriously CYOA games already exist and are usually just text... here:

http://editthis.info...story/Main_Page

http://chooseyourstory.com/

You're oversimplifying RPGs to get them to fit a different category when we already have a category for them. It's silly and unnecessary.

These have existed even before gaming as we know it was even thought of. COG is brill, didn't know the other two. Must check 'em out.

And DAI is an RPG 'cause you can RRRRRRoleplay with your very own unique character.....your OC. That's half the fun.

Oh yeah, it just OP said "if DA:I were a book or movie" so I thought I'd point out that games of that kind do exist too. Chooseyourstory is kinda lackluster compared to COG ...Theres also this nsfw site: https://chyoa.com/

Lol DA:I is the least choice driven BioWare game I have ever played. There is only one ending, no branching side quests, and the few main story choices you get to make...well you're lucky if you get to see any effect in game (not that the outcome is any different no matter what you choose).

Hold on a minute. What is a choose your own adventure movie? How does that even work?

I agree with the OP that "RPG" as a genre descriptor is practically useless now, as it's become far too vague. Not to mention that, by some definitions, practically every game where you play a character can be considered an RPG.

Slightly OT: I wish Choose Your Own Adventure games were more common. I'd play the heck out of those.

In Exile, there was a time in the late 80s a thing called interactive TV, choices was limited but it was done.

Surprise surprise, RPG in all computer games equals Choose-your-own-adventure. It's the closest thing to an RPG without humans interacting with each other.

Wait until you hear about the smell-o-vision.  lol! I remember a favorite TV show of mine tried to replicate the smell experience by selling these scratch and sniff cards and whenever the screen prompted you, you scratch a part of the card given to smell what was happening in the scene.

And yet it remains Bioware's most successful launch title.

Implications are scary....

They're catering to a much different audience more and more with each game. Making it easier, shorter, less dark, less offensive, not punishing players for their choices, not making it hard to understand or remember, not including anything complex to figure out or be surprised by, etc...I guess it was the right choice for them.

Again, this is why I hope ME4 turns out better. I also hope DA4 goes in a dfferent direction than DAI.

Mass Effect is pretty much dead to me. Dragon Age might be as well after this, but the DLC will be a deciding factor.

Uugh... I kind of want to roll my eyes at this, but I also kind of want to agree with every word...

This confuses me greatly.
