Just a shout into this lonely forum for one reason: started a new game of ME1 this week.  Goosed up the combat difficulty.  Charged in with guns blazing and barely looking at my companions.  Had me arse handed to me.

Yeah, the companion AI has some severe issues and is not too bright, but even that aside - you can't just blindfire down a room and have everything fall over dead.  Usually.  As technically limited by its time as it was, I'm finding the combat to be more engaging and interesting, 7 years later, than so many other action-hybrid-button-mashers.  Maybe it's a function of my low level, but it seems like I have to pay some actual attention to not taking damage, keeping to cover, and picking my shots.

That's the feeling as of now, hope it lasts  :D

With gunfire, probably not. Adept and Engineer can do that on high levels, though it is arguably boring :D

Makes me laugh how squad members (some of whom are supposed to be experienced marksmen) will stand and shoot a wall instead of the enemies. Also they sometimes just shoot Shepard in the back thank the maker that there's no friendly fire. Just means you need to tell them where to stand.

But the difficulty on ME1 is weird, especially playing as an adept, first half is solid (playing on insanity) second half is a breeze. Going for different squad set ups can change things up quite a bit though. I actually enjoyed playing with no biotics on my team: infiltrator Shep + Tali + Ashley (was going for Ash and Tali's achievements) meant using different tactics, I ended up relying a lot on Ashley's ability to take a lot of hits.

I tried giving Garrus and Tali High Explosive Ammo to deal with krogan enemies. Results were surprisingly effective. And fun :D

Use toxic bullets, or poison, whatever it is called.

And a warp :P but since you had no biotics that's not really an option.

I managed to recreate the face of my original Shep - yeah there were less slider settings, but still, /proud.  Trying for squad combos I didn't use much, this time around - also currently no biotics.  Shep is infil, and took Assault Rifle for secondary instead of Shotgun as my original did.

On Feros with Ashley and Tali.  There is much shooting of wall.  I need to get Ash some heavier armor. Every time I send her somewhere to get a clear shot, she gets whacked.  It's very amusing to me, tho, to send a tank in to draw fire and create enemy movement, while I'm half a map away with a sniper rifle.  "Uhhhh, you go stand over there, it'll be fine, just try to duck for cover between sniper shots..."

The standoffs where the enemy mobs just stop completely behind cover are annoying.  I think they don't even pop out to fire because the AI companions don't let up firing into the wall.  Effective suppressive fire, I guess!  I usually have to send one of them, or go myself, to where I take a few hits just to create movement.

I haven't played a biotic Shep, but there was definitely a point in my original run, back in the day, where all my Infil needed was his modded Hand Cannon pistol that never overheated; just charging around maps pewpewing everything that moved..  I probably had my first game on Normal, tho.  Still, it got to the point where mowing things down with the Infinite Pistol was faster than bothering to line up a sniper shot...
