Well kinda.  inb4 click-bait comments.

http://www.eurogamer...g-shadow-realms

Shadow Realms, the asymmetrical competitive online RPG from BioWare, has been cancelled ...

"We've made the decision to not move forward with development of Shadow Realms," said BioWare Austin general manager Jeff Hickman on the developer's blog.

... right now there are other projects for the team to work on within the BioWare studios for the coming year and beyond," Hickman said. "These include additional ongoing enhancements to the award-winning Dragon Age: Inquisition, as well as the next game in the Mass Effect series and other new IP."

So there is hope, but if they're cancelling stuff, i wonder how long before the bean-counters turn their gaze onto DAMP...

Shadow Realms looked kinda goofy anyway, so I'm ok with the manpower being freed up for more interesting stuff. Assymetrical competitive stuff is gonna be all about Evolve for the next while, I suspect, so probably a good move.

Patch 4 did wonders for MP and completely destroyed my SP game on PC. I'm running a GTX 980 on Windows 7 so idk if it's a GPU issue or a OS issue... but my game SP experience is so riddled with CTD's now I can't even transition to another map.

Why not releasing Alpha of Shadow Realms for free (to DAI players) to give us something we can play? Im pretty sure its better and more interesting then DAMP atm? Just for the time we wait for a DAMP DLC...

@hellbiter88

I dont play MP to much but SP is why i play BW games and patch 4 crashes my game and corrupts my saves so i hope the extra manpower goes to fixing DAI

I played on xbone

I thought the cancelled thing was the "new IP".

A shame, but Fable Legends was basically the same thing so they came up too Little too late.

DLC for DA:I was already promised in advance, so I don't see this as anything new. SWTOR Will likely be the biggest benefactor of this cancellation.

Nope, there is another 'new IP'...

BioWare Austin was working on Shadow Realms, which is the game that just got cancelled.

The mysterious "new IP" is being developed by the BioWare Edmonton team (largely) and... that's all anyone really knows. They've kept it tightly under wraps other than "it exists".

the mysterious game is more than likely ME4 or another DA title

such games are certain to pull in the fan base, particularly if they build them in the same way as DA:I and ME3 in the SP/MP setup being basically the same (ok they should improve on the system)

but its unlikely to be anything to worry about unless they announce studio closures......

It's rumoured to be a new IP (that means an entirely new game title), which would mean not a sequel. ME4 is already well know to be in the works. BioWare has discussed it extensively. Whatever their "new IP", they are likely going to try and pull in a newer demographic to expend their market. Of course, that is entirely blank speculation, but it would be a logical step.

A DA sequel is highly unlikely given they just released Inquisition. BioWare is not in the habit of yearly iterations like Ubisoft (Assassin's Creed), so I would not expect a new DA title for at least a few years.

Bit of a shame, I was looking forward to Shadow Realms. But I guess it's good Bioware knows their own limits and choose to focus on fewer projects instead of spreading themselves too thin, trying to do everything.

No, they've actually said flat-out that it is a brand new IP.

BioWare Montreal is (largely) working on the next Mass Effect game, although some in the Edmonton office are also working on it. There's a lot of cross-work among the various studios.

EDIT to add:

http://www.ign.com/a...e-teases-new-ip

“While the Montreal studio is working on the next Mass Effect game, our team here in Edmonton is developing a completely new IP,” BioWare executive producer Casey Hudson said in a developer diary during EA’s E3 press conference.

“When you work on new IP,” BioWare GM Aaryn Flynn said, “it’s a chance to have a clean sheet of design to start at the most fundamental set of principles you can have.”

Now, I realize Casey Hudson is no longer there anymore, but Aaryn Flynn is.

Not surprising, really. If the game wasn't drawing much buzz, or facing already established competition, then the practical move is to free up those resources for other projects that will be more likely to be profitable. A good example would be DLC.

It looked nice but doesn't an online asymmetrical competitive RPG require a subscription model? I ask because I haven't played many personally.

I'm glad they are not doing this. The game with such a title should've never been released anyway.

It'd be good to have some extra manpower into DAIMP.

As for the mysterious 'new IP' - we'll see. The only setting that BW does not have covered currently is some sort of 'alternative modern reality'.

ME for sci-fi, DA for the European fantasy, JE for eastern-kung-fu. There are KOTOR\SWTOR, but that's a 'borrowed' setting that  'belongs' to the others. This shadow thing was supposed to be like that from what I can tell. Hopefully we're not talking about yet another MO-only here.

Must be tough for those who had worked on shadow realms and put time and effort into it.  The trailers looked kind of neat.  As for DAMP imo they strayed a bit too far from the successful MEMP dynamic, I am wondering if they are making any money from it, I get the feeling they are not doing as well as memp.

I would sacrifice many PUGs for an updated Jade Empire.

I roll my eyes whenever I read a press statement saying that someone is excited. Oh we're very excited the project is cancelled and we're shipped off to make DLC for SWTOR. Thank God the boss cancelled our project! It's what we really wanted all along.

Come on.
