I am really going to have to re think how I approach each region/area next time through this game.  I got to Skyhold at level 12 I think. Then the levels seemed to just fly by before I started doing Main Quest stuff.  Now I am level 23 and am just about to go to the Arbor Wilds.  I have done every other side quest I can up to this point except for killing Sandy Howler and Highland Ravager and closing a few Hissing Wastes Rifts.  I spent too much time in the Hinterlands.  Pretty much finished that before I moved on to any other region. I'm gonna open up more of the map next time and try to progress the main story some before doing the side quests.  Any suggestions on what regions to tackle in what order that seem to flow well?  I seen the list of what level you should be before going to certain areas.  I want to know what you guys think and what worked for you.  Thanks.

I think:

Hinterlands

Storm coast

Fallow Mire

Forbidden Oasis

Crestwood

Western Approach

Exalted Plains

Emerald Graves

Emprise Du Lion

Hissing Wastes

... is pretty much the order for easiest to hardest.

There isn't much in the way of story linking to them, though if memory serves, one of the areas (Western Approach?? Exalted Plains??) does foreshadow the Freemen of the Dales (found in Emerald Plains), and the Red Templars collecting slaves for red lyrium mining (found in Emprise du Lion).

Speaking with Mother Giselle will keep one updated on the status of the people suffering from the War, as well as other underlying conditions. Then Cullen will help link the flow of Red lyrium as a possible trail.

One thing to know, as I found out - if you reject Cole as a party member be prepared to get nagged about it for the rest of the game.  I went with the mages rather than the Templars, I did the Templar thing with my first character and I really hated the mission - and Cole.  If I wanted to listen to someone spout a bunch of irritating, nonsensical crap I'd go talk to Solas more often.  I was playing a sword and shield guy and got pretty bored with it so decided to try a mage instead.

So the second time around I went the mage quest route - and I liked that quest a lot better.  Not so much of the "hey, lets stumble around this incredibly confusing map trying to find a way out" and a lot more interactive.  So I get to the Battle for Haven and sure enough, Cole shows up anyway.  So then on to Skyhold after surviving Haven, and I run into Cole in the courtyard.  My advisors are telling me they don't know if this guy is a spirit or a demon or what he is, basically he's a big question mark.

Ok, so from a roleplay standpoint I don't know this guy from Adam, I've just lost a bunch of my own people who were counting on me during the Battle of Haven, if the enemy wanted to plant a spy this would be a great way to do it, plus he's just so damn weird it's beyond description.  I've got enough riding on my shoulders, I've seen what happens if I fail - I don't have time to deal with his angst ridden spirit/demon BS.  So I tell him to take a walk.

Now I'm getting nag screens all the time that say stuff like "Cole?  There is no one at the inquisition by that name" or some such stupidity when I travel between locations.  Really just makes me want to slap someone.

Sorry, got off on a rant there.. lol.

One thing that does come to mind, I do like going to Emprise Du Lion early if I can manage it, I don't generally clear it out completely but it's the only place I've found silverite so far, and the stuff is just entirely too useful for crafting heavy armor for mages/rogues.  So I usually go far enough in that I can get to some silverite for crafting purposes, then come back later when I'm higher level to clear out some of the harder locations.

I found Forbidden Oasis less challenging than Fallow Mire personally. The giant and the Venatori don't seem to even spawn there if you go at a low enough level, although the Par'as Cavern fight can be a problem, it's kind of the one exception. I usually ranked the areas by power cost to unlock them and visited in that order--i.e. Storm Coast and Oasis, then all the 8's, then Emprise and the Wastes.

I find bouncing about works best for me. I head for Skyhold at level 7, that means doing the alliance at 5 or 6. Of course that also means I have recruited Bull, Viv and, Blackwall by then. (I don't recruit Sera) Some of Hinterlands is level 12, but some of SC and FM in 7-9 so have to bounce. By then I'm lev 13-15 so, anywhere is fine, just whatever suits my mood.

The giant in Forbidden Oasis is a bit of a doofus, in my case he just gets stuck on a wall so he's much easier to take down then you'd expect.

Personally I found the Storm Coast to have a very large difficulty range - initially it isn't much harder than Hinterlands, but those damn Darkspawn Alphas can be a bit of a tall order at low levels and that lol-troll Rift at the falls - where you end up trying to shut a level ~12 rift with spiders and Darkspawn spawning out of you arse.

I plan on getting to Skyhold at Lv 10, also farming the T3 Chest in the Dwarven Ruin in the Hinterlands.  It's going to be a better run through for sure.

He is, he also can't climb or, throw rocks UP and, you can get above him with an all ranged team and just peck away at him until he's dead.

I agree on Storm Coast, and just when you think you have it, you do that war table mission and, BOOM there are level 16 red templars all over that salt slogged sodding place.

Believe that is one of the training Giants; the one fighting a Dragon is another. Now if you wish to have a more challenging encounter with them, Orlais seems to have some included.

I do wish they had a work quest activation for the Red Templars on the Storm Coast; spent a lot of time trying to get inside there on my first campaign before realizing it required more time, and access was impossible.

Funny thing is the giants in the Graves will put up a pretty good fight, but it's those rhino looking thingys that you almost always end up tagging with an AoE attack of some sort while your trying to take down the giant that really give you fits.

Now that we are talking about this......it is a good place to go to practice... like I wanted to control Cole and see how an Assassin Archer worked, what order to pull off moves and abilities and see how it all works.  Did the same with Mages.  Since I am a 2H Warrior Champion, I didn't really use the other characters.  I came here to hunt for Great Bears and just get a feel for the different styles of combat with each character.  Giants, Great Bears, and Brontos can take a good beating.

Emprise Du Lion

Hissing Wastes

... is pretty much the order for easiest to hardest.

I don't know about Emprise du Lion before the Hissing Wastes. When I did that, I just felt like I was going backwards. I killed the 3 high dragons before entering the Wastes, then I realised the high dragon there was actually weaker than all 3 of the others. But, if we're thinking of the side areas like levels in a platform/adventure-type game with portals or completely different areas, like Super Mario or Crash Bandicoot, Emprise du Lion felt like a mid-game area, while the Hissing Wastes felt like the final area. The Storm Coast felt like a mid-game one too, while the Fallow Mire felt like the 2nd last. Mostly it was the ambiance and/or the feeling of intensity of the map.

This was my first order (keep in mind I was trying to stay away from areas that advanced the main story, so I did Crestwood late thinking it was one to leave alone for a while):

Hinterlands

Fallow Mire

Storm Coast

Forbidden Oasis

Western Approach

Exalted Plains

Crestwood

Emerald Graves

Emprise du Lion

Hissing Wastes

Oh, and the best place to practice with characters IMO, is with the undead in the water in the Fallow Mire, since they're endless.

If I remember right, there's table quests that are unlockable by 'dipping' into areas early.

So getting Iron Bull early for example (before Castle redcliffe) unlocks one of the war table missions, but progressing without doing it will close that table mission off to you forever.
