I agree, the way it is now makes for a much better progression ... as far as I can say, anyway, as someone who hasn't done any romances.
But it did feel weird to get the scene in which Cassandra turns down a female Inquisitor when all you do is pick "I care about you" style not-really-flirts. She's so respectful if awkward about it that I actually felt guilty for putting her in that position -- but at the same time, some of these not-really-flirts feel like they help express their friendship so much better than the normal dialogues that it feels "unfair" for the game to "punish" you for picking them.
Dorian and a gay or asexual female Inquisitor, though? That's really well done with no bad feelings or awkwardness. They can be so secure in their knowledge that no attraction could ever happen between them that they can pretty much say anything to each other, from friendly teasing to actual flirtation, without any worry that it might ever stray into crappy "just kidding, I don't want you -- unless you want me" awkwardness.
