BioWare cancels 'Shadow Realms,' its first original game in six years

shadowrealmgc3.jpg

Well, that was quick. Six months after its debut, BioWare's announced it's canceled its online action-RPG, Shadow Realms. The Austin-based studio isn't moving forward with the four-versus-one PC game because, as the studio's general manager Jeff Hickman tells it, it's working on other things at the moment --including the next Mass Effect, add-on content for last year's Dragon Age: Inquisition and the team's Star Wars online RPG, The Old Republic. As GamesIndustry notes, that last title might attract new players given this December's release of The Force Awakens. Don't fret if you signed up for Shadow Realms' closed alpha, though, as BioWare says it's working on a reward for your trouble.

In addition to all the above sequels and additional content it's working on, the Texas team apparently has its hands in something new, as well. Could it be what the outfit teased last E3? Perhaps. We might not have long to wait until we see it, though -- the Game Developer's Conference is in early March immediately followed by PAX East and then E3 in June.

Disclaimer - images in that video say conceptual prototype. They may or may not make it into the game.

because apparently this needs to be stated constantly.

Why am I not surprised in the slightest?

Though I'm not sure this belongs in the DAI forums...

I had no interest in Shadow Realms, so I'm kind of glad that they'll be working instead on titles I am interested in.

I don't know what I don't know

Would the game have been good, great or meh? No way to know. The promos were awesome, but marketing is one thing. Reality another. I tend to no longer even read the hype; I just play what looks good or based on reviews when the product is all said and done. One of the reasons I have ZERO issues with DA: I

I had no interest in playing the same game, again, different stroke for different folks, I guess. It's fine to work in old IPs, but something new after half a decade is never bad.

As long as this means they will focus more on DA and ME, no problem. Nobody was lingering for this "original game".

Huh well hell. Yet again Bioware Austin takes the EA shaft. They probably had the game canceled by EA so they can turn my city's branch into a DLC machine.

Mass Effect 4 didn't kill Shadow Realms, Evolve killed Shadow Realms. The whole 4 vs 1 thing is a gimmick that will probably only work once, and Evolve got there first.

Yes, lets get super sad about a game of which we've only seen conceptual footage never being released.

Really?

Really?

If it was a game they wanted to make and it was trashed by EA, then yes it is sad. Could care less about the game itself, but EA keeps screwing Bioware Austin.

Does anyone actually read the original posts

""But the biggest focus for our team in BioWare Austin will be on Star Wars: The Old Republic," he clarified. "As every Star Wars fan knows, this is a massive year in the Star Wars universe. We have some great plans for expanding this epic game this year, and look forward to sharing the news about those plans with our players in the coming weeks."

someone wants to get moar credds from the 7th episode SWU hype, apparently...

Nothing about Shadow Realms was particularly interesting to me, so I'm not really lamenting it's loss.  It would be neat to see a new IP of course, but Bioware has two very successful series of games and both of those interest me greatly.  I can't be upset that those will continue to be a focus.

I also like SWTOR a lot, so I'm down for seeing new content for that as well.

TOR needs to be scrapped for some new KOTOR titles.

Mass Effect 4 or Shadow "I don't give a damn" Realm.

Hmm.

Give me .04 seconds to figure out which I want more.
